What a waste of /. commenting. I look through the top 50 and the obsession with the fucking name is amazing. How about the fact they don't support stored procedures or triggers.

Fundamentally, stored procedures usually are not the correct architectural decision for applications that need to scale.

WTF? Stored Procs are the basis for enterprise development with a DB backend. It is the whole point of scalability. Hard coding commands is horrible for anything but small apps. I am also not a fan of Oracle, but until a better alternative is presented I will stick with MySql because it is free, and can scale much better then these guys. Sorry Drizzle, its too muddy for my tastes.

“It's the worst thing I've ever seen, not just in the time I've served, but in my lifetime in the Utah Legislature, but it's because of the way the party controls the Legislature.”

“So you voted against it?” Powell was asked.

“No. I'm a Republican,” he replied.

The initial article makes a similar statement. These are photos that have been taken by Cassini over the course of its tour of Saturn. The artist has made the effort to color match, light match, image match the thousands of shots to create the final product. From what I read (and yes, I did read both the articles) this has not been an easy process.

For myself, I am blow away by the beauty of the universe ,and the minds that not only put Cassini there to take these images, but the mind who could seen them pieced together. The only thing better would have been to be in a spacecraft that could fly around Saturn and show me even more. Simply beautiful.

This is where I disagree. GPS in phones in not accurate because business has not seen the need, nore the cost to build that level of capability into a device. With GSP, when you got three Sats back when it was a big deal to be /- 100 ft, today we pull many more signals and got accuracy down to tens of feet; enough for gps displays to adjust the visual to always keep you on the "road".

With the number of towers visible by a receiver, I would postulate that a dedicated receiver could multi-angulate to a rather precise position. It could even do this in 3D. We think 2D because that is all we are use too with cell *phones*. A cell positioning device could have more capability via programming to do the same thing as GPS. Besides, altitude with GPS is absolute, not relative to pressure which is how it is reported and designated on aviation maps. ( as I remember, one number tells you the altitude you'll hit the tower, the other tells you how far you'll fall).

Like anything these days, innovation is driven more by money or necessity, not curiosity. I freely admit I do not have the knowledge, capability, or capital to try this out, but in my gut, I know it would work and work accurately.

What would be interesting is if we could get navigation via CPS, Cell Positioning System. Everyone one of those cell tower out there puts out radio waves. Why not a receiver that can triangulate on multiple towers to determine a position, ADF on steroids. It strikes me that the basic technology is out there to process the signals into a position. The receiver may need to have a database of tower locations, the towers would need to send out a ID signal, but with that I figure the accuracy would be damn good. As a long time inactive pilot I have not seen the inside of a GA airplane, but more and more panels are phasing out dials and nav radios.

So somehow discipline is not punishment? Tell that to my Mom when I did something stupid like talking back to her. Soap on the tongue sure felt like punishment to me.

Having read TFA, the issue I find most jarring is that the parents of these children are considering suing the school for their actions. Really? Now that's a grand way to teach children right and wrong. "Gee Johny, you called your teacher a pedophile and got suspended because it was a false claim? Lets sue the bastard instead.". I don't see the argument as being over whether the school had the right or not, the core issue is that kids now feel free enough to use words, to "ink" words like pedophile, rapist, bi-polar as weapons. "Ha, you can't touch me because I am protected". Instead of taking the school to task for taking action to protect their employees, how about we take to task the parents that create children with little to know awareness of basic respect to adults. I may not have liked my English teacher in high school, I certainly may have said to friends, I cannot stand that lady, but had I called her a rapist, my parents would have applauded the school and added further "discipline" to make their "punishment" seem kind.

Is there a fan web site to distribute concert info, merchandise, song samples?

She may have gone unsigned for 10 years, because she did not use the "free" media to get her name out there, to get a following that big labels will latch on too for money. Personally speaking, I wish she'd not sign a label, but use the tools out there today to get her name, and her music out there to the masses. Hell, you just did it here using /. as a free promotion. If she's good enough, people will listen, word will spread, she gets noticed.

back when it was radio stations or television, labels played the part of shill for the musicians. They had access to the people who decided what was and was not played over the air. They also had the machine to help promote an artist including marketing and distribution. Today, as another posted mentioned, an artist can go to a local studio and record good quality music (or buy software and run a board themselves). They can start a web site,or get a Facebook/myspace account, and of course start touring, even if it is local pubs and coffee houses. If you are good, they will come. Signing with a label these days is really playing with the devil. I wish her the best and as I said, I'd buy an album from her.
