Perhaps this analogy is a bit of a stretch, but in my opinion this is like the windows vs *nix debate.
Linux/Small business: small, individual components that perform a single, simple function. If one doesnt work, you can just swap it out. If you have special needs, they can be tailored to.
Windows/Big business: One stop shopping. If you cant do it here, you cant do it.
This is a gross generalization i know. I am simply trying to relay the idea of this analogy.
We got us a flamer.
so, you are factoring in the cost of a non-existant, non-announced HD-DVD addon? Do you not see a slight flaw with that logic?
If you are a huge SONY fan, fine. Just admit that and keep your ill-conceived points to yourself. You make all the other SONY zealots look stupider by posting this crap.
Did you also pull that 5 years online quite from out of your ass aswell? I searched for it and found no reports or even speculation of such an inclusion.
Do you remember the brand trust article that everybody was talking about not two weeks ago? Where did Lenova sit there?

Where is Lenova? Oh wait, its not there.
Ok, so formerly, Thinkpads were being manufactured by a well know, respected, and establised company. Now they're being manufactured by a relatively unknown company.
Clearly racism is the driving factor.
I completely disagree with the MMORPG idea. First off, if shes not a gamer, theres no way shell be interested in that.
Honestly, there are 2 types that i would suggest:
1. Party Games. All of the mario party games, or Fuzion Frenzy for the XBOX are perfect. My friends gf played that with me, him, and another "girl." my friends GF won one of the minigames >70% of the time, though a few minutes later we learned that she didnt know to use the directional pad as was only using a and b.
2. Oldschool. The NES has 2 buttons. Plus the games are non-gory, which should help. What can i say, Mario's a pimp.
Even if you go newer (n64) Nintendo is the way to go. Games like mariokart and waverage offer amamzing gameplay, and waverace's handicap really evens the playing field (too much so for my tastes).
My experience with playing games with traditional girls is that they dont mind loosing or coming in second. They dont see it as a competition, but rather just having fun.
Every time i go to Lik-Sang, i wish that they had a redistributor located in the US. Soo much cool stuff, very reasonable prices, restrictively high shipping costs. I am not saying Lik is padding their shipping (as it does have to ship from Hong Kong) but when the shipping is 50 percent of the cost, it really becomes hard to justify.
At 35 dollars each, these guns will sell like crazy. At 45 each they would sell well too. Unfortunately, being in the US means that shipping from Lik is always what turns me off. In fact, if the guns were 45 each with 10 dollars shipping, i would have been more likely to buy it.
Unfortunately that is not the case.
I priced out 2 guns. at 35 each, thats 70 bux. however, after shipping, the total was 100, which means that shipping alone is 30 dollars. I just cant justify that, which sucks cuz i have a projector and have been itching to play house of the dead and Time Chrisis (and Duck hunt via emulator).
the number of transistors required to make a nand gate is less than the number required to make a nor gate. Therefore, nor would offer no benefit, while requiring more tx's (higher power consumption and less chip density)
Ok, i am a college student who is studying computer engineering, and i dont even have a fucking laptop.
Laptops are nice. They are cool. They are sometimes useful. But, for most people, they are simply not necessary.
When did having a computer, and now a laptop, stop being seen as a privledge?
My advice: they can have a laptop when they can pay for one (maybe meet them dollar for dollar). Thats how i got my first comp; got a job, and worked for it. And what i payed for that thing, before inflation, is a good bit more than what a mid-range lappy will cost.
If the kid wants it badly enought, they'll work for it. If they dont care for it that much, they wont. If they want it and wont work for it, they suck and/or you are a bad parent. Period.
note: i understand that it isn't the easiest thing for kids to get jobs, especially if they are under 14, but if you look you'll usually find people who will hire kids for occasional but regular odd jobs that pay under the books. Alternately, you can set up a system by which they can earn credit towards their laptop or other large purchase.
seriously, NO IT WONT FUCKING DO ANYTHING FOR LINUX! It was a fucking EU ruling that they release this; there is no reason to go with this as its for the same fucking price, and all thats different is some 12 megs of media player.
Seriously, WHY WOULD THIS SPARK INTEREST IN LINUX? has that become the default tagline or something? Is it some sort of running joke that i dont get?
Spelling Nazi +1
Creat_ your own lens: a 'lens' being any non-air medium through which the light will travel. A piece of tape or celophane are examples of such lenses.
And besides, I love taco bell. Period. I dont see why you feel the need to question it.
its different. Broadband makes the internet 'not special' - it requires no effort to find any tidbit of data that you could possibly want. movie times? no problem. Want to find out what an "angry dragon" is? Its only a search away. With dialup, there is an intermediate step, that makes internet use more of a process rather than a part of life. and download speeds affect the downloading of websites, which due to broadband penetration, have become quite heavy. I could not imagine trying to download some of these sites on a dial up connection. It would just be too painful.
The issues u have probably aren't dust, but the laser getting 'worn out' - this is especially bad for PS2's, where often the only thing u can do is manually adjust the potentiometer (voltage the laser gets) or take some clear film and creat a second lens to help the laser focus.
And really, i think its just you. My xbox (a refurb) cant read DVD's, but thats the only dvd drive that i have tha has failed me in an unreasonable period of time. I have a Toshiba DVD player from like 1999 or something that is perfectly fine.
Apple is a compnay that is supported by fanatics; people love their products and always want to be in-the-know, that means running the latest beta software they can get their hands on. Where there is supply, there will be demand and the fact that it was leaked is of absolutely no suprise atall.
Yes this guy broke the NDA, but he also fed into Apple's viral marketing scheme, and is now ruined for that. The fact is that Apple, a big, usually not-so-facless corporation, is strongarming an individual that did something that is 'wrong' but IMO pretty low down on the scale of of how bad it is. Will the leak (not the lawsuit) have hurt Apples sales? No. Would it have lead to support problems? No; on the contrary it would give more people a chance to pre-emptively check and fix their apps to work on the new build. Would it have satiated some of the fanatics who would then post page long pieces about every little change? yes.
Apple feeds off of this energy and their evangelical fanatics, and is now taking a stab at their very base.
This is why sooo many people are at arms about this IMO.
Wow, im shocked that this wasn't modded down to troll.
Anyway, I am a windows/linux guy like everybody else here looking to switch to mac.
Wolrd Domination: they do own the market, but what does that mean? If you are already farmiliar working in their environment, then should u not have ur computer with you, you'll still be fine. Apps? Most core productivity apps (office suite) are available for mac, or some sufficient or superior replacemetn (Unix roots). Not always the easiest route to go, i'll give you, but stillnot enough of a deterrant for me.
Dev tools - VS is a matter of preferance; i dont like it, but to each his own. C# is a language, not a tool. That being said, mono is available, and progressing nicely, while.NET sucks ass and will ruin any system it is installed on. Also, vi extensions and tools can make it quite functional, albeit im no fan of the CL interface (but some are amazing with it). Better than the point-and-click only M$ toolz.
Price: Mac's retain their value much much longer than a PC does. So while the initial 2000 dollar (high end) investment is higher than the 600 bux for a mid/low end dell (depends on the prephirals u get/config) you aren't buying a new mac every 6 months (though you may want to, my god are they gorgeous). Also, if you are actually doing that, you are burning some serious cash. Learn to upgrade/build your computer.
Devices: what MP3 player is that? I have not seen any MP3 player that can match the IPOD in terms of both price AND quality. Granted, the Dell DJ, Creative and RIO's offerings as well may be a few bucks cheaper (or include an FM tuner or other features) they do not match it in terms of build quality. Yes, I will admit that there is the pain in the ass batterly life issue, but nothing is perfect.
MCE is the biggest piece of bloatware. Despite the requirements of having a tv tuner that has hardware encoding, it can still bring an extremely powerful system to its knees. I dont know in what format it holds its program guide data, but however it does, it will kill any system with less than 512 megs of ram. And somehow this is a good piece of software?
To top this all off, it will allow you to watch TV on your PC, not something all that revolutionary, or something that other (windows) software doesnt already do better, ie beyondTV.
TIVO, on the other hand, is a fully functional PVR, that hooks up to your TV, and will allow you to control the media stream flow comfortably. Its remote is a piece of art, and the system is robust and responsive. The programming guide is easy and intuitive. TIVO rocks. MCE Sucks.
wow, i just saw this, and already the 3 stereotypical posts have been made.
Anyway, No, it will not pass into obsurity anytime soon. The reason is, unlike laserdisc, DVD actually has a sizeable installed base. That means, that the next gen format will support DVD, and the gen after that will probably do so aswell.
Have you seen or used any of those cheap printers? They are truely horrid. They are completely software driven, and the software is bloated beyond belief. They are also extremely flimsy. To top it all off, they dont print any better than printers from a few years ago did.
That all being said, i have an old Cannon BubbleJet 200 which is well built and the printer cartridges are relatively reasonably priced. I will never use a lexmark, because my mom bought a lexmark POS printer for 50 bux, the refill was 35, and the first cartridge lasted 2 weeks. To top it off, the printer will not work (even b&W) if both cartridges are not present and not empty. That means that in order to print in black and white, i must have a working color cartridge. That is just rediculous.

Before anybody else points it out, i realize that the HD-DVD addon has been announced. Sorry about that one.
