Pressurized aircraft, such as commercial jet airliners, have small windows because it's easier to build a small window that resists air pressure than it is to build a large window. The mechanical stress on the window rises quickly as the size of the window increases.
Another reason for small windows is that it causes pressure to be lost a little less quickly if the window fails, although depressurization happens pretty fast either way. A small window is also less likely to cause other structural damage if it blows out, compared to a large window.
The higher the pressure difference that the aircraft is designed to handle, the smaller the windows tend to be. The pilots have large windows in front of them, but they are extremely expensive and difficult to produce, since they must resist a lot of pressure (as well as impact from things like birds).
Aircraft that are not pressurized can have windows of any size. Many small private aircraft have large windows, since they don't need to resist any pressures. Indeed, in unpressurized aircraft you can even open a window or door in flight, if you want. However, if the airplane flies really high, everyone inside needs to wear an oxygen mask.
From Jimmbbo:
At 35,000 feet, the pressure on all parts of the fuselage is about 1150 lb per square foot...
Each 1.5 foot x 1 foot window will have about 1700 pounds of pressure pushing from inside to the out.
The world doesn't need copyright, at least not century lasting ones. The original term was 14 years, in todays age 2 or 4 years would be sufficient for a State endorsed monopoly. Thankfully although the stupid Berne Convention appears valid everywhere (but Taiwan), most countries are very lax enforcing this, especially for foreign interests.
Copyright in America was invented to put an end to the hereditary rights of the English printer's guild over works writers would sell them once and forever. And after the revolution USA would happily copy whatever foreign works happened to fall their hands on. The State should grant a monopoly for "limited time"... So the author could make something, etc. THEN, it would go to the public domain, benefiting all.
The way it is now? Permanent stagnation, the culture is private property, off limits, the era of darkness, with media in the hands of a few... As it was before the printing press, books were in the hands of a selected few, the rich, the monks, etc. Corporate America has done everything to restore the dark age.
Except the stuff Canonical puts in, such as Firefox, and the myriad of PPAs (Personal automated repositories) at launchpad which covers almost every software project. So you can choose which app to be really update and leave the rest of the system alone; and of course, old fashioned third party repositories and the odd precompiled package on web sites.
In my experience when Debian releases a "Stable", its usually 2 years behind. "Testing" is usually 1 year behind, and unstable much closer to update, but often breaks. Ubuntu is usually just 6 months behind, with much less breakage than "Unstable", albeit a bit higher than "Stable". Ubuntu is really a snapshop of unstable at a given point, but Canonical makes it stable enough for release in months.
Ubuntu server LTS has nothing to envy from Debian Stable for servers; and in fact you can have a more updated and more solid server with Ubuntu Server than Debian testing/unstable, which seems to be in a permanent moving platform. Of course, Debian takes much much more time to test stuff, and the results (in "stable") usually pays, but its not perfect either, Example case: With Debian Etch, there is a stupid bug where if a machine loses power, grub becomes stuffed with a "savedefault" option which prevents booting...
With Debian, you usually wait 3 years between updates, vs 2 for Ubuntu LTS or 6 months for regular Ubuntu. Also, all the odd architectures supported by Debian makes it perhaps one of the best options there.
Freebsd has a different system, when they do a major version upgrade (called current), is not really expected to be "stable", until.2 or so. But in the meantime, you can be very up to date via the ports system (and benefit from a custom compile); or stick to the supported binaries, which seem to be about 1 year behind. Your choice.
I suppose they imagine 25 steps of someone's foot and get an instant idea. My only problem is when they mix it with other legacy measurement like they do with people's height, and come with weird stuff like 5 feet AND 10 inches; instead of saying something like 5.83 feet OR 70 inches, which btw in metric would be 1.77m.
Well i think its better that way. Its an all or nothing thing anyway, thinking you can stream content and have any control about it is doomed to failure. But if you like to like in a DRMed (annoyances) world, have it, while the rest of us get decent releases from people who always know their way bypassing restrictions of any kind whatsoever in spite of witch hunts and such.
Not true. I was able to successfully playback 128kbps mp3 stereo files in a 486dx-100 with an mpg123 compile optimized for 486 (rather than 386), which meant it was better than FhG's windows player of the time. The other common lossy formats of the day were mp2, ra, and embedded in devices: ac-3 (DolbyDigital) and atrac (Minidisc) which needed more bitrate for similar quality, but less cpu.
But who can implement flash properly? Adobe isn't? Unfortunately, gnash and swfdec don't implement patented codecs (h264, vp6, etc), so it's kinda pointless, and Adobe doesn't care for platforms other than Windows and barely MacOSX; so getting rid of flash altogether is the best option, at least as video playing is concerned.
I used to use gthumb for importing until it broke in Ubuntu 10.04... Searching for alternatives, i found Shotwell, which while basic and new, its blazing fast.
I invite you to watch these different DTT tests. Yes, i know North America are already screwed, but just to be clear Digital TV is not the problem, but the standard chosen in your country. Sure, in theory ATSC can reach farther from a single source, but whats the point when the system is so fragile analog works better? Naturally the rest of the world is avoiding ATSC.
Why is the US so stubborn about adopting the International System of Units? Even the country where the "Imperial" units come from did. And while we are at it, why not adopt iso 216 and be done with silly sheet sizes?
I'm actually using Windows XP 64 for gaming, it is my last Microsoft OS ever. Any future games that won't work there should either work with wine or run native in linux for me to purchase (and use steam like DRM or none).
Isn't that what the Age of consent is for? What you need to strive is to lower this age in the States. By definition Pedophilia means under 14, the middle range above 14 would be Ephebophilia, which is the "lolita" type. I assume this is a taboo issue there.
Break law? Which Law? US Law? My country does not accept software patents so I'm not breaking any law by using VLC or Mplayer. Also you are mixing "open source" with patents. In those few countries where you have to pay a license to reproduce or encode, if you do pay them, you are legally entitled to use Free Software. You don't have to use THEIR player or encoder.
BTW you don't have to use "russian" repositories to add patented codecs playback, because it is not illegal to use them, even if you live in one of those corporate regimes, you could have paid the license to use the codecs by yourself. In Ubuntu's case, all you do is install the package called "ubuntu-restricted-extras"; it might be illegal to use in your place, only if you didn't pay the licenses.
The issues with h264 are the same with many other codecs, including the infamous mp3 format. If Canonical has the financial might to pay annual license fees for every patented codec out there, then be my guest, i don't worry tho i don't need it; but at least people would stop complaining why these formats won't play out of the box.
To install flash, you go to their page and download their 64 bit "alpha", and put it in ~/.mozilla/plugins For SUN Java you need to add this repository:
deb http://archive.canonical.com/ lucid partner
Remove openjdk and install sunjava all from synaptic.
QT libraries are no problem, but KDE are. for starters, they usually screw up Brasero and the likes. Not to mention you have to load all that stuff and take more memory, etc.
If you just use k3b for burning, you wouldn't notice Brasero, Gnomebaker, Nautilus (cd writing) are screwed, or wrongly assume they are broken.
So the Widget libraries are not as much problem as the Desktop Environment libraries. I always prefer to avoid anything that depends on the opposite DE library of the environment I'm using. When i use gnome, i avoid kde libs like the plague. When i use Kde, i avoid gnome libs like the plague. Either way qt and gtk libs are fine. If I'm not using either DE, then avoiding DE libs is good to save memory ^_^
XFCE in theory only needs gtk, but Xubuntu became so bloated because many included apps depend on gnome libs, and now uses more memory than Ubuntu (gnome) itself...
They make too big a fuzz of it in the Anime, in the Manga after Chii gets him the briefs, Hideki just goes in the store and buys the panty, despite the embarrassing.
It is the same with big labels and movie studios. Digital media costs essentially zero, yet they rise the costs instead of going down. They also add artificial means of control on what we can do with this data, and expect us to cover that expense. Well, no thanks.
The hypocrites do sell movies in China for 3$, where bootlegs cost cents. The same bootlegs cost the same in most parts of the world, but they don't get the 3$ choice, and its usually countries with much worse economies, where ppl don't have the luxury of spending 30$ for a DVD or music CD.
Also, Amazon sells mp3s without DRM, why not do the same with books? Authors could use online retailers as publishers, instead of letting yet another parasite in the middle to dictate terms for them. Books, just like songs, should stick to unencumbered unrestricted formats, something like pdf which can be read by any decent ebook reader such as the Hanlin, which imo is the best.
So if Hollywood is capable of selling a movie for 3$ in China, using physical media (DVD), why would the publishers of eBooks, charge 15$ in intangible form? Of course we won't buy it, we'd go "elsewhere" online and get it, in a decent format at zero charge. If an author puts a donation button in his/her page, that the best chance to get some sort of money compensation, because I'm not giving anything to publishers who didn't provide me anything.
I'm sure if a publisher sets up an ad supported site for free downloading of all their book collection, they would make profit, as they are making money from nothing, which is the cost of replicating a book in the digital domain.
With their custom OS pre-installed, I'm sure many people would like a dedicated "secure terminal" instead of having to deal with issues in their everyday PC. Takes up much less power and is faster to boot (flash based) than an old pc. They could even try an ARM tablet or such.
First, WTH is this doing in/. ? The OWNER of a tv STATION gets arrested boarding his plane when trying to leave the country, when a court summoned him to back up his criminal claims against the president (He said Chavez ordered the killing of protesters), all of this in a foreign country. And it somehow becomes... YOUR rights ONLINE? What has someone from/. anything to do with this? Do we all cry if the owner of Fox News (Rupert Murdoch) gets sued by Democrats for libel? How is this relevant to/. ???
70% of the comments are bullshit. Most comments have an obvious anti-Chavez bias, completely full of lies. Anyone can visit the country and immediately discover the truth. This is psycho-warfare. Believe all my lies of this country, "but don't go there!, it's dangerous!, just trust everything i say"...
Say, does/. reports when a community station gets closed? By reading these comments, one would think there is no "dissident" opinion allowed in Venezuela. I dare you come here and not find anti-chavez opinion in the media, 95% of it in private hands, 80% against Chavez. Yet, Chavez keep winning elections, because the people want him despite what media corporate lords want.
There is even someone asking if its possible for people to own a satellite dish... Are you on drugs? Subscription TV has higher penetration than Internet here, above 25% (lame, i know). You can watch all the "fine" examples of American TV, including Fox News, CNN, ABC, and the rest of your "unbiased" news corporations. We don't have a Great Firewall, and we don't censor news or opinion, but people is accountable of what they say. Even that other channel which supposedly was closed, is not, they just lost the license for public broadcast, but are doing just fine in cable and satellite, 24h attacking the government.
This guy Zuloaga, who owns another channel, will likely lose his license in a few years. That doesn't mean much as it only covers 3 cities using public airwaves. Most of its target audience are wealthy people with subscription based tv in their home who won't miss a thing. There are still many other TV stations, almost all radio and a majority of newspapers and magazines all against the government, yet the people won't budge.
Their biggest mistake is believing their own lies, thinking everyone hates Chavez just like they do, then banging their heads against the wall everytime they keep losing elections, trying to find excuses even if the whole world comes to watch the process or 100% of the voting machines get audited right after the election closes. So they resort to the conclusion the majority is stupid for choosing Chavez and they, the "well prepared and educated", need to seize power by any means, just like Honduras and oppress anyone else.
Democracy, or the power of majority over minority, is an obstacle for the opposition, who was used to rule the country to their whim for decades, and who conveniently forget it was their failure which caused Chavez to rise in the first place. Socialism? Communism? There isn't anything of the sort in Venezuela. There is a declared INTENTION towards Socialism, but thats about it. We can't even claim a mixed-economy, as the majority of production is still in private hands, but at least it's not 100% private anymore and a decade of neo-liberalism is being reverted slowly.
Of course media corporate lords don't like these community radio/tv things, but they won't tell you that. When they were in power, such thing was "pirate" and heavily repressed. How dare the poor organize and enter their turf they spent so many years to monopolize? But of course you don't hear that, its all Chavez this, Chavez, that. Keep living in dreams, the people are awake.

I read the policy and consider it correct.
There are two ways to fix the abuse of the SI standard for base-2:
So, use the IEC prefixes and you don't need to change much. Its just a little i.
Furthermore, this was approved in 1998. Don't you think you had enough time to adapt by now?

I'm sure there are more distros and programs implementing this.
