I really don't. How is this supposed to help? I don't see it. Also I don't understand the priorities. How many people were killed by terrorist actions last year in the EU? 100? 1000? And how many traffic deaths were there? How many died from obesity or diseases related to smoking? If they are concerned about protecting lives they should track how much candy or tobacco/alcohol people buy and use. If they monitor/forbid overconsumption of that it would probably save more lives.
Yes, it would really suck to be blown up buy some nutter but the fact remains that I'm so much more likely to get killed in a car accident that the "terror threat" hardly deserves mentioning.
I just don't get it. Why are people so dumb that they fall for these tricks.
How about this nice experiment in the "oh so nice" country of Sweden. Very ethical and everything, exploiting the defenseless.
Sugar Experiments Of Mental Patients. In 1947-1949 a group of mental patients in Sweden were used as subjects in a full-scale experiment designed to bring about tooth decay. They were fed copious amounts of candy, and many of them had their teeth completely ruined. But, scientifically speaking, the experiment was a huge success.
Yeah. Gutsy broke my vmware. Not expected and from what I hear there's no vmware in gutsy still. We who have technical know-how can still fix it, but it does seem that the QA-dept slipped a bit on Gutsy.
What about Mandriva? Does the bug affect them too? Since my upgrade to Gutsy was less than smooth. I've got to reinstall the lot anyway and since Mandriva was a favourite of mine a few years back I might give them another go. I hear that they've cleaned up the mess they had back then. So, how is it Mandriva guys. Do you also try to kill my HD or are you a safe (data)haven?
he ONLY thing I can't do in linux is play the latest games, or use some "Internet Explorer only" websites.
How I wish that was true. I really do.
I am using Kubuntu in my company which is very much a windows shop. There are so many things that don't work as well as they should when it comes to windows/linux interoperability. Our printers are setup in an "Active Directory" so after an AD-login in windows "\\ad-name.domain.name" the printers show up. In linux they don't. Although machines and folders do.
You can fetch/send mails in linux via Exchange, but things like shared calendars and folders/notes are not there (yet). The web-client of Exchange is horrible if you don't use IE, in which case you get (almost?) the same functionality as you do in regular MS-Outlook (calendars, contacts and all)
MS-Office connects into sharepoint so that I can edit files there and if you use IE you get more functionality (more or less essential functionality) than with any other browser.
Don't get me wrong here. I fscking hate that I need MS-Windows, but the fact remains that I do if I want to be able to do my job. This isn't a complete list either, I could easily add another 10 or so things that don't work well but I think you got my point.
Currently I run MS-Windows in VMWare (which I had to install from source since gutsy don't ship vmware yet, not very pleasent to find out after an upgrade) and unfortunatly the fact that I need MS-Windows will not change anytime soon. I'm still hopeful and try to file as many bugreports as I possibly can. I file them in http://launchpad.net/ in the hope that someone somewhere will propagate them upstream if that's needed.
Yet. There's no windows version yet. That's what you wanted to say, right? One of the benefits of KDE4 (coming real soon now(tm)) is the ability to recompile and run KDE-apps in any environment with QT4. Or atleast that's what I've heard. Then windowers will be subjected to all the love that is Amarok among other things. I hope.
Using illegal tactics to shut down a legitimate site has to be cyberterrorism, right?
Animal rights activists who hack and deface sites seems to get that label. I'd find it quite hilarious if "Big Media" would be labeled as such too. They'd be in some interesting company.
I am by no means a "power user". I've used OO.o for a few years when doing mostly linux-work. Now I'm transitioning into project management more and more and in this world, almost everything is Microsoft. Documents are put into sharepoint, all documents exchanged are MS-Office and MS-Project is the standard tool. Sharepoint connects nicely into MS-Office and so does MS-Project. Everything is "interleaved" or whatever I should call it. This doesn't mean that I can't use OO.o or KPlato or something else, but it does mean that its harder for me to do so. Yes, the filters on OO.o are great, but are they good enough for me or do I have to do some extra work to convert those documents? Most likely there's something that won't work and I'd hate to be the one to explain that I broke document just because I wanted to use OO.o instead of the MS-O that the company provides.
Microsoft is damn good at making sure that it's harder to use competing products than it is to use theirs. Let's hope that the EU will make them open up all specs so that all companies can compete on equal terms.
Yet we happily run around screaming "Linux has no viruses", effectivly teaching our users to not be careful. And almost anything configuration-like we want to do requires a root-like password, effectivly teaching everyone to be careless with that too.
We've got to start looking out or we will have our shiney metal asses bitten.
Hey, that's an even better idea. Who wants to write an extension that downloads but never displays the ad. If you don't pay for your bandwidth then how about re-downloading the ad 100 times, or more.
Should be fun. I hear IE7 can have extensions now too. Let's write one for them too while we're at it.
So, if it's human error that caused the problem, how can the swear that it won't happen again? Will there be no more humans working at microsoft anymore? I don't get it? People make mistakes and as long as people are involved in any process they will cock up from time to time.
The point about systems not being so punitive is a valid one and should be brought up more often and louder. People who've paid money for their product should not be punished for an error on microsofts end.
There seems to be a project for Gnome called Conduit that sort of does what you want. I think. I haven't tried it. It does however look like a very ambitious project aimed at syncing both files and other data between both computers and other services..haeger
I tried DARCS once and while it had some great features it was probably a bit early in development to be used at the time. Things might be different now though. Has anyone tried both and could give some insights?.haeger
Garrett also goes on to say that simple Debian packages could provide all of the functionality of Automatix without any of the problems it exhibits.
Automatix only exists because there is a need for it. If it's so simple to make the package provide the functionality, why hasn't anyone done it? Automatix seems to be the (only?) ones who have tried to do something that many people need.
So, our friends at RIAA have just allied themselves ideologically with the talibans in afghanistan?
From wikipedia[...]A sample Taliban edict issued after their capture of Kabul is one decreed in December 1996 by the "General Presidency of Amr Bil Maruf and Nahi Anil Munkar" (or Religious Police) banning a variety of things and activities: music [...] .
On IRIX it'll kill all intances of a process. On SUN it'll kill processes, starting at the highest number and stopping at 1. A rather subtle but important difference.
Well, it's kind of hard to keep the boss out of the datacenter, especially the IT-boss, and when he thinks it's a good idea to let his two rug-rats into the computer-room and lets them roam free and unsupervised it's a recepie for disaster. They managed to turn the key to "off" on a fair number of machines before he managed to stop them.
I've found out that asking for a written order is quite effective. If it's a legit thing they want me do to it's never a problem and if not then, well let's just say that managers don't want to put their name on a piece of paper (or email) asking you to do something shady.
Something akin to these lines.
"Hi. I understand what you want me to do but since this violates my personal ethics/religion/dietary requirements I would like you to confirm that this action is what you want me to take".

I'm not trolling here, I'm genuinly trying to help out to get Kontact usable, but for me it isn't quite there yet.

Still it doesn't do exchange intigration all that well, but I think they're on the right track.
They wrote about it on the dot a few days ago.
This way, if they can make anything stick, he can't sue them for wrongdoing.
But what the hell do I know. I'm not even american.

How would "git" compare to something like DARCS?

Odd company they're keeping.
We would, if you could stay the "frak" out of our business.
USA still has a lot of international say and use it in a not so civilized way at times.
Stop kidnapping our citizens and send them to Guantanamo for no good reason.
Stop keeping "secret" prisons in our countries.
Stop your european missile shield program.
Stop invading souvreign countries to protect american profit interests.
Stop pushing SW-patents and other bad ideas onto the rest of the world.
Stop being the top polluter in the world.
etc...
Your politics affect us, and as long as that's the case, we really can't stay the "frak" out of your politics.
A rather subtle but important difference.
They managed to turn the key to "off" on a fair number of machines before he managed to stop them.
Yes, we still remind him of this occationally.
