    I'd also agree with the funding thing; that's all I hear about is the constant chasing of funding from people at the lab here.

    I'd bet the tech is a more resistant upgrade of the PAL system; from what I've heard, punching in the wrong code a certain number of times renders the bomb useless, until the board is replaced. Unless you're McGuyver, lol.

    A mems keylock would be pretty hard to pick... but easy to break. :)

    There are much newer variants, I'd bet, since the 40's.

    It's really hard to set off that many explosives to within a few nanoseconds of "exactly the right time"; an electric plasma pretty much wins out every time. :)

    Jupiter's radiation belts are pretty extreme; there's some info in the Galileo data. :)

    We can't possibly carry enough shielding for the x-rays alone... and get there in a reasonable time.

    A Jupiter mission will have to launch from Mars orbit, IMHO; unless we learn a new engine technology.

    Although;
    I still think we should send as many people to Mars as will go; I'm sure when the postcards about the Ham Bushes and Blanket trees come rolling in from Mars, and how we were completely mistaken on the whole there not being an Atmosphere thing, ticket sales will skyrocket!

    Of course, we'll need lots of Security people and Politicians to go; we could build them special ships. :)

    It will get there anyway in a few billion years, as the Earth is enveloped in the outer layers of the expanding Red Giant our sun is to become. :)

    The only issue with that plan is the eventual "Launch Failure", probably over an unfriendly country. :o

    Shit goes downhill fast from there, regardless of intent. :(

    The Nevada site is the best available site in the country; everything south of the Mason Dixon line will be abandoned in the next century due to Global Warming anyway. :)

    I found XKCD in the mid thousands, and am always amazed at the various topics.

    The "Blow-Dryer in a Box" What-If was a major point of discussion between the Engineers and Physicists, but everyone agreed with Monroe in the end, lol.

    Finding the tiny velociraptor profile in my Monday morning slide is a regular contest now...

    I have to admit; I got my initial impressions of my government from my Grandparents more from my Parents.

    They lived thru a lot in the 30's and then the War; the government actually helped people that needed help, back then.

    The Government back then put people under surveillance, but not everything they said or read or wrote.

    I too, was extremely ignorant of a great deal of what happened in the LBJ/Nixon/Ford/Carter/Reagan years.

    I'm totally amazed that I look back on Clinton as the best Pres so far, lol. I Did Not vote for him. :facepalm:

    W. was Cheney/Rumsfeld's sockpuppet; You don't think He decided to land on an aircraft carrier at sea, do you? :)

    Read about those guys' involvement in the Nixon era stuff, and the Regan/Iceland BS, Arsenals of Folly is a great book on some of that:
