I'd like to say congratulations for starting a wiki - it really helps you do your job as a politician - listening to what *people* actually have to say about things, rather than corporations. If only every politician had one...
> I don't blame the cigarette companies - they're like any other company
Yep, because I'm sure every company sells addictive drugs that eventually kill the customer - and then construct a massive advertising campaign to get more customers (i.e. children) - definitely a winner for society.
I'm not sure if that sentiment is true. If many people work on the same problem - each having a different line of attack, they'll slowly work their way towards a proof. For example, the Riemann Hypothesis. The knowledge around the problem has definitely enlarged over the past century, and we can see possible line of attacks such as field theory (IANAM). On your last point, I do think computers will play a large part in proofs in the future - but we're miles away from giving it a statement and asking it to prove it's correctness:)
Looking at that article, you can see Grigori Perelman solved the Conjecture way back in 2003, but hasn't yet submitted it to a journal. The general expectation is that he will claim the Clay Maths prize however, because the peer reviewing on arXiv has recieved a lot of review already.
How many Millenium Problems have we solved now? If we end up solving two, it's been a pretty efficient decade already.
That can be used to justify every invasive measure by the government. For example, placing cameras in every room in your house. Well, you've got nothing to hide, have you?
Well, you're wrong. Experimental evidence is against you (a simple test of evolution would be to place a sample of bacteria in a petridish, and watch how the population tends towards a certain trait, and what about the clear evidence of humans evolving from apes?). Intelligent design and creationism are pseudo-religious rubbish.
Evolution is not a belief system, it's a theory, which means it should be weighed on it's scientific truth, not someone's personal preference. What is so bad about it anyway?
The worrying thing is that I can edit the next quarter's budget - perhaps putting 'Ferrari for Jimbo Wales' as one of the items. Not a good idea I don't think!
I hope they're being sarcastic:) Last year they lost their biggest customer Apple, so it takes a fair bit of marketing spin to make it the best ever year! Whenever the G6 comes out, with low power consumption (if it does of course), that'll be a great year for the Power architecture.
Yup exactly. Goto is used all over the Linux kernel code, because it is the most efficent method. For example, when multiple conditions could fail in a function, without goto, you would otherwise duplicate that error-clearup code multiple times, increasing the size of the function exponetially. Just look at lxr.linux.no to see what I mean.
And goto is kind of abused there as well, there's several loop conditions where a goto is strangely used.
I guess you've been posting bug reports on bugzilla.kernel.org? Otherwise it's not *really* their fault that something doesn't work. Kernel developers test their code pretty well.
They'll have to block all browsers from accessing their site. It's the only way!!11oneone

You weren't a firstborn then?
Someone got their article deleted :)

Seems like the next version of the Oxford Dictionary will have that phrase repeated 10 000 times if this site's anything to go by ;)

I can't believe that's rated insightful :)

You're not thinking like a CEO! What's the bigger market? US or China, the EU or China? Yup, it's China, and there's hardly any competition there.
Yup, it's more than a washing powder now :)
Ah, but is there a free open NVIDIA driver in development?

Ah, you mean chroot jails. Nope, as far as I'm aware, Windows doesn't have even chroot abilities.
I'm surprised strpcy, strcat et al still exist.
Heh, you must be new here!
The Empire State building - life size - in ASCII I reckon. Ah well, adios karma!
I think we'll soon be facing an integer overflow if someone's been counting the Google stories on Slashdot y'know.
Hmmm, they've just got to have some vested interest in this new technology, that RFID lab. If only I could just figure it out!

All the lawyer's names would be Bruce, and they'd repeat 'G'day mate' until your mind shuts down and you give them the money :)
