Apple "lifted" the graphical interface - GUI/DESKTOP/ICONS - directly from XEROX's PARC research development (settled in court- Apple paid) - PARC also initiated/developed the MOUSE. Many recent Apple products look like direct knock-offs of Dirter Rams designs for Braun's 1950s and 60s sound products. Check out the shirt pocket portable radio/record player. The Braun "Phonotransistor TP1" from the 1950s - played back music from small discs (eh!) as well as radio playback. It's one thing to produce slow computers and a software (G5 and XServers) - apparently the "Cool"exteriors of the g5s and XServers didn't scratch !^) American consumers were lemmings for 30 years when it came to autos. Then Honda and Toyota started producing cars that were NOT instant "Lemons". Didn't take consumers long to switch. Since "All You Can Be" - "handhelds" are supposedly the future that consumers want - this is definitely 10 steps backwards for Apple. Be interesting to see how Apple/Jobs will step forward or will it be 6 more steps backward?

I tried posting to Wikepedia - alternative viewpoints about "HIV Being The Probable Cause Of AIDS". I was totally censored out of existence - by those "in the know". Unfortunately very few people in the medical "profession" are literate when it comes to what is scientific versus what is voodo medicine. So it is not very surpising that those not in the medical professional are even more lost when it comes to distinguishing what is scientific - and what is bullshit. For example, 56% of all medical treatment performed by MDs have no scientific basis for use. 70% of all prescription drugs are useless (British Medical Assoc.). 50% of diagnostic tests don't test for what they say they test. And on and on.
Temporary or permanent hearing loss can happen if:
a) sound above 85 decibels - the louder, the more damage (got meter?).
b) 85 decibels one hour or more in duration - the longer the more damage.
c) and if the maximum output is forced into the 4000 Hz range - that does the maximum damage (like the Hollywood idiots boost sound during trailers - dumb and dummer).
d) smoking cigarettes causes permament hearing loss.
e) drinking alcohol cause temporary hearing loss.
f) worse case scenario - guy who smokes and drinks and has been running sound boards at concerts for several years (dumb and dummer) - likely 50% hearing loss.
g) notion is that if someone beside you can hear what's playing on your earphones/buds - you are having a hearing loss happening.

Jobs like Gates hates competition. Apple will complete in having products that look cool - but looking cool has nothing to do with being USABLE. Apple refuses to produce hardware and software that is USABLE.

Why not really compete - insead of prestending to compete!?

My daughter tripped while playing in a neighbor's backyard and fell against a fence which had 4 inch rusty nails protruding. The nail penetrated several inches into her thigh. I rushed her to the hospital. You need to know that this was in Canada during a time period when tens of thousands of Canadian's were given unsafe blood transfusions - that is, blood loaded with HIV particles. The Red Cross in Canada lied about heat treating the blood to destroy the HIV particles - and a special commission then banned the Red Cross from handling the blood supply in Canada - and just recently the Red Cross fined for lying at that time. While at the hospital - my family doctor and a dozen other doctors began to debate with me - trying to convince me - that I should allow gamma globulin shots - to ward off the possibilty of tetanus. All doctors kept telling me that the gamma globulin injections were completely safe.
After several hours of debating - I was finally pressured into allowing the gamma globulin shots.
Several months later I found out that in fact the blood used to make gamma globulin has not been heat treated - even though the doctors swore that it was!! So it ain't necessarily so - that because a better test is available - that the blood supply will be any safer. Those people in white coats more often than not make bad decisions - make bad judgements - when it comes to our well being.

Personally after 15 years of buying Apple products - I won't buy another Apple box. I am not interested in being "cool" - which is what Apple sells - coolness. Usability isn't even on Apple's radar!

I have had enough of Apple's bloated Quicktime Player as well. And will likely switch to Linux on a dual core AMD to do H.264 encoding (using Nero or something better).

Forcing everyone to have a chest x-ray every year to detect tuberculosis, USED TO BE CONSIDERED SAFE - NOT ANY MORE! Lead used in food tins and in plumbing components was used because "lead was insoluble in water" - USED TO BE CONSIDERED SAFE - NOT ANY MORE! Shoes used to be fit with floroscopes in shoe stores, USED TO BE CONSIDERED SAFE - NOT ANY MORE! Even today, when one sees "safe" applied to many situations (Radon, VOC's gasing off computer components, fire retardents off gasing from your computer monitors and on and on) - if there has been any epidemiological studies done (rarely) - the study is based on the impact of a particular compound/effect on a 150 pound male. Naturally an infant wieghting 1/10 the weight would be exposed - to 1000 percent higher exposure?! Safe?! The Precautionary Principle - "better be safe than sorry" - seems to be applied less and less everyday in our culture - as the astronauts who got shredded into nothing - learned.
Looks like the 80%/20% factor is correct again. That's 80% of what "we" hear - when it comes to the environment - is "Green Washing". The entire corn/ethanol save the planet was/is just another one of those "Green Washing" efforts by "The Sky Is Falling The Gang" - yet again trying to justify another tax dollar grant/grab.
At some point an analysis was done to show that the if the entire current corn production in the USA was used to produce ethanol - the outcome would be would enough ethanol in the USA for one week's replacement of gasoline!

What's embodied energy? - the grand sum total of all the energy used: to "grow and harvest" the raw material, to ship to plant, to process material, to ship material to retailer, to store material, to market/sell material, to ship material to buyer (naturally the cost of infrastructure has to be inputed as well). A plasticized aluminum little bag for potato chips - has an embodied energy worth of 75 cents.

I have downloaded the Mac OSX version of Ubuntu twice - the Live CD version. I am on a G4. It doesn't install. Is there a site with step by step instructions on how to get it to work? I mean a usable step by step tutorial for non experienced??

While neither Gates nor jobs produced their respective operating systems or GUIs - at least Gates partially paid for his (although it was peanuts). Jobs is "smart" in terms of having figured out - that "coolness" can be marketed and sold (read The Tipping Point) - due to the fact that "lemmings" follow easily. But when it comes to Usability - Jobs has not interest - futher monopolizing the "lemmings" is his only concern - iPods that only play Apple codecs - Imacs that can't be expanded with 3 year old technology inside etc. The fact is that G5s can't even come close to Intels or AMDs that are $1500 cheaper - when it comes to producing media of all kinds.

Of course these people don't force pop-ups. They get the attention of people using/benefiting by the free info and then indirectly try to sell something. It's what free intrioductory seminars are all about.
At the same time MIT and other universities are putting up all the courses, manuals, lectures free of charge on the internet. More often than not - this info is far more relevant than many/most free sites (like Wikipedia).
MIT is offering all of its courses for free online (has been doing so for a yr. or more) - evenutally all 10,000 courses will be online. Included are notes, videos, assignments, projects, projects results, software, books etc. - all free!
Most universities guard their stuff - even more so that some corporations - what do those universities have to hide?

But "their" OS is NeXt OS which is FreeBSD OS. Hardly something Apple made/developed.
