Surely they must only have a sample of macs and use statistical models to extrapolate, right? They can't scan all the macs, right? right?

    How do they do it?!?!

All our little boys will undoubtedly enjoy all the attention from the priests.

Yup, if I had to decide where to send my child for education, I'd send them to school with an organization that has had absolutely NO HISTORY OF ABUSING CHILDREN like the Catholic church. Yup, the Catholic church is the best place to send my kid. They would never be abused there, under god's watchful eye! Ohh and they'd learn all about how evolution is a lie! Don't forget that important fact! Imagine where society would be if we let our children believe THAT horrible "theory".

This is only true of their shared hosting service though. I can't speak for their VPS service. Also their founder Brent Oxley is a giant douche.

Here's a hint to all those "artists": most musicians are broke as fuck but keep playing anyway, because they're not in it for the money, they're in it for the music. As a musician myself, I would be honored if people downloaded my music for free. I'm sharing something that I created with the world, and the fact that another person can get joy out of my music just like I can makes it all worthwhile. I think that any street musician would agree.

understanding physical effects which will bear no consequence on the extreme challenges we will face in the very, very near future.

This is just flat out wrong. You should know from getting an undergraduate physics degree that EVERYTHING we use for technology now was at one time a "physical effect which will bear no consequence on the extreme challenges we will face in the future". Seriously, just look at electricity and magnetism as an example. Those were just "physical effects" at one time but now they're the basis of computing. We're now using computers to model biological systems and cure diseases, which is just one example of thousands where we're taking extreme problems and solving them with something that was once just an odd "physical effect".

What if they learn something from the neutrino observatory that leads to teleportation technology? Or solves our energy crisis somehow? These are all possibilities and to not investigate the unknown is just a waste of humanity itself. You're a scientist, man. Act like one! Where's your spirit of curiosity and undying passion to know the unknown? I guess you decided to go into engineering instead of research, and maybe that passion isn't something we share. Engineering is an awesome degree and I hope you do great things with it. But don't lose your inquiring spirit :-)

Also just for clarification, I'm not defending Apple's patent trolling, I think it's bad publicity and paints the company in a very negative light. But the system itself is clearly broken when a company can abuse it like this. And let's not forget that Apple isn't the only patent troll out there, and in my opinion they're far from the worst of the bunch. Only on Slashdot are users familiar with all the companies that are solely patent trolls and don't even produce any products. Apple is acting negatively, but at least they make things with those patents. It's still patent trolling though, IMO.
