    That's pretty sad if they're trying to say there's "thousands" of POS's running Linux, and that that's the "majority" *cough* FUD *cough*. I'm sorry, "thousands" of POS's doesn't even TOUCH the tip of the iceberg. Hell, there's "thousands" of POS's in say, cub foods alone in my state. And that's just one business, and just one state.

    And it's been such a huge hit they're looking at expanding it. I beleive they've had something like 500% more usage than they originally predicted.

    If they're so "poor" they can't afford a 200$ computer, odds are pretty good they collect welfare themselves already, and aren't paying a lick of taxes anyways, so I doubt they really give a shit what the rest of the community wants to pay for.

    One of my coworkers communities is on that map, they have community wireless. What did it do? It meant that qwest and comcast had to start charging 30$ a month (the price to access the wireless in chaska) to try and compete instead of 50$ a month. They're still in the market, offering all the same services, and still doing just fine financially, they just aren't allowed to gouge the market any longer.

    you mean like parks, and stop signs in the parts of town I don't use, and plowing over there too? That's the weakest excuse I've ever heard. There are MILLIONS of things in EVERY city that the majority of citizens never will use in their day-to-day lives, that doesn't mean they shouldn't have to help pay for it.

    and it's especially useful to only have one person who knows the ins and outs of the hacked together system, so if he decides:

    to leave the company
    turns out to be a douchebag and gets fired
    or is say, just sick on a day a critical service goes down

    you have no one to keep the system running. See, now you understand why it's obvious you've never run a "REAL" business. Anyone who has would know they'd be better off with 3 mediocre people who can all do the job than 1 excellent person who the company hinges on.

    no, they "just now" started selling low cost AMD64 servers. They NEVER sold an entry level complete box for 795$ before the latest release. That's the type of market dell held before. IIRC, the cheapest opteron box previously was almost 2k$. Not only that, these new boxes are "all sun" instead of just a rebadged whitebox from a different manufacturer.

    And the funny part is he hasn't yet figured out that the same problem exists on unix, it's called "oracle". Amazing what a company can do when 90% of the budget is put towards marketing. IE: taking upper level IT out to dinners, ball games, vegas...

    We were unfortunate enough to implement it at my current place of employment. Needless to say, the upper level IT who green lighted it without asking a single end user no longer are employed.

    problem is if the criminals have even a bit of skill lojack doesn't do sh*t. They used to have some guarantee that if you didnt' get your car back they'd pay for it... notice they no longer do it. Although, even when they did, it was a catch22. If you got your "car" back, even if it was say... only the left front rim, they wouldn't pay... talk about false advertising.

    Yes, I see where most of my stuf comes from. And yet again, saying "well nobody else will follow suit" is a good way to get nothing accomplished in this world. "I'd vote, but the politcians all lie anyways". Good, bitch and moan, but don't actually do anything, and lord knows don't encourage anyone to do the right thing. The US needs to wake up, and stop buying from walmart, and stop picking up all those wonderful "made in china" goods. I know I avoid them at all costs. Corporations will learn fast. If google says "fuck off china" and users say "know what yahoo and msn, I'm using gooog because they don't deal with communist china", I guarantee eventually microsoft and yahoo will come around. There may be a lot of money in china, but there's still far more from .us consumers.

    Well... the kernel is a good place to start.

    Although you do bring up a good point (and I'm sure I'll get modded down for pointing it out) gentoo did a great job of copying freeBSD. I personally think it was a great idea, but I'd still rather be running FBSD. I'm sure gentoo has changed since I last used it, but it was a "bad" copy of FBSD about 2 years ago when I gave it a shot.

    What would they accomplish... let's see, setting a good example for the rest of the corporate world? I'm sorry, apparently we aren't all so jaded as to believe that nobody should try and do good things in this world because it "just won't accomplish anything.

    GOOG isn't having any influence besides reinforcing the ruling powers that be in china that money talks, and as long as they have money, people will do what they want. It only takes one crack in the wall to break it down, and it has to start somewhere. The company that's "not evil" should be the one chipping away first too. You think Google's the only one who profits from google being in china? Get real, if google turned china down china would be at just as much of a disadvantage as google.

    For the sake of redundancy and people that won't read my "flamebait" as it is now. Yes, google should not do business in china at all. If they're truly not evil they should have no problems taking the moral high ground at the cost of the bottom line. That's what "not being evil" is. They said it, not me nor the OP, which is why it's perfectly legit to hold them accountable for their claims.

    Google claims to not be evil. That means NOT FOLLOWING A NORMAL CORPORATIONS PROCEDURES. Getting banned from China for not filtering is EXACTLY WHAT NOT BEING EVIL REQUIRES! Don't get mad at the public for pointing out something google claimed they'd do.

    Being banned from China is google being a martyr. Instead of looking out for the bottom line, they'd be looking out for what's "right". "Don't be evil" means doing what's right at the cost of the bottom line. It's not the OP's fault that google made the claim. And he should be commended for trying to hold Google to the standard they claimed they'd abide to.

    Perhaps too many years of politicians saying one thing and doing another has made you complacent enough that you think that's what's SUPPOSED to occur.

    They ARE under obligation when they take money from the government in exchange for doing it. If you claim they are not, I'm apparently going to have to start my own "telecommunications company", promise to rollout fiber for the government, and then buy myself a couple nice houses and every exotic car I've ever dreamed about.

    Verizon had monopoly status for a LONG time, and they also promise fiber to every home for a LONG TIME, and never came through. It's not because they had to share, it's because they POCKETED the BILLIONS of dollars they got from the government to make sure that fiber rollout occured. If we as citizens are footing the damn bill for this fiber rollout I don't really give a shit if verizon wants to share or not, we paid for it, we can use it how we want.
