I care. So does anyone looking for a comprehensive and stable distribution of Linux!

I was trying to decide which distro to install for a friend's wife who, and I quote, wants "Linux on my computer because I'm sick of Windows crashing!" I was going to pick one of the more colorful and intuitive distros for her, even though I use Debian myself. Package management is obviously important. I'd like to direct her to RPMs or something rather than going over there to compile from source. Much had changed since I last looked a couple years ago:

    1. SuSE: Gone and re-branded as Novel Linux Desktop. Now it's all tailored for business.
    2. Mandrake: Used to be my second choice, but now you have to pay to get most of the enticing features included. Three CDs for free version, and six CDs for paid version.
    3. Linspire: Free unless you want to use the built in package management system. Then you have to pay for it.
    4. Red Hat: Gone. I hear Fedora Core is good. Nice that they gave us the free version, but it doesn't have near the support or attention that Red Hat does.
    5. Slackware: Going strong. Great distro. Package management? Nope...

The truth is that Debian is still totally free and offers the strongest package management out there. Anyone who actually uses Linux, no matter what distro, understands that Debian is important.

I agree to an extent. I'm not as much separating America from the people, as much as I'm trying not to generalize my discontent over the roughly 295,769,895 people who live there. And it's the US Government who's doing most of the sensationalizing. Moving from one war to the next (I'm talking "war on drugs" "war on crime" etc.) using fear to unite the US population in support of the President. Filtering what news comes back from Iraq (as a current example) to hide the thousands dying, atrocities committed by US soldiers, and complete disorganization and only letting through false American heroism. The media and the population is only following the government because it's working. Not to mention it sells.

I don't have a problem with most americans. I have a problem with America. I agree with you that it's a shame, but you've got to admit that the US is doing a pretty damn good job at looking bad.

Besides, the US needs us for power and water. There are many things that we need the US for evidently, but military is not one of them. We protect ourselves by not making enemies of the rest of the planet. I like to think that the rest of the world would not stand by while the US forcefully took us over...

Guh. Exactly why I avoid music that uses DRM. I'm a musician and a good portion of my music is legally acquired. I encode from CDs or get from musicians who make it available. I would never pay almost as much for a low grade digital representation of the data on a CD with unpredictable copy protection and a complete lack of physical backup.

So, was all that music trashed or could it be recovered? Like I said, I don't understand DRMs or WMV.
