  1. Looking for public enemy #1? on Keeping DEA In The Loop About Amtrak Travelers · · Score: 1

    You found him.
Look to your left, you just found her.
Innocent until proven guilty? Innocent until you step out of line is far closer to the truth.
We hate those evil drug-pushing criminals, but we love how well our wartime economy works. The answer? Declare war on our drug-pushing criminals. It's quite perfect, really. Why look overseas for criminals when our nation's already infested with 'em? It's ever so perfect.
And regarding South America? They don't bother dealing with the airlines: they unleash pesticides and fungicides down there that kill not only drug plants, but food and cash crops as well. Also, their children. It's no wonder Americans get shot at down there: how much would you like Belgians if they were poisoning _your_ food in the name of one of their more inane policies?

  7. Here here. on The Guts Of An iPAQ · · Score: 1

My fondest experience? Developing on a gloriously unstable Compaq "workstation".
Put together nicely enough when you cracked it open, but I never could figure out why it randomly rebooted itself on me. To their credit, they did send out a replacement unit before we returned the buggy one. After chewing out multiple people on their end.
With four racks full of Compaq servers and a mess of workstations, you'd think you'd get slightly better treatment than that.
On the bright side, I learned to save early and often?

  9. Err. on Dreamcast Postmortem · · Score: 2

For what it's worth, they're the same folks that brought the Javascript e-mail bug issue to light, so whoever was proffering the idea that they might be in bed with Microsoft, seeing as how the timing of this (hot air blowing) coincides with Ultimate TV's release, well... I wouldn't be so sure of that.

  11. So, uh. on Red Hat Breaks Even, Beats Street Estimate · · Score: 1

"Red Hat not bleeding money out of every orifice anymore!" GO OPEN SOURCE GO. What exactly is this "article" proving? The viability of open source-based companies? Likewise, sometimes a good game is just a good game.
Keep on hoping for that EVOLUTIONARY LEAP forward that will likely never happen and panning everything that doesn't represent it. (although having just picked up shenmue this weekend, i might have found it?) I mean, if you're into flogging yourself because a game isn't forcing you to learn a completely new mythology and new icons and new new new, go ahead. Meanwhile, there are millions of us out there who are content to (you can interpret it as "willing to settle for" if it'll make you feel better about yourself) play games that are as pretty to look at as they are fun to play. Derivative? Yeah, and?
Picasso said "good artists borrow, great artists steal".

  14. Indeed they are. on Compulsory Licensing for Online Music? · · Score: 1

And I doubt that more legislation is the answer: it's what got us here in the first place. We don't need to make more laws, we need people to either sanely enforce or repeal the ones we already have.
An antitrust case against the RIAA/MPAA should be a slam dunk, right? So why hasn't one been raised? Do we really want more laws on the books for their lawyers to exploit or do we want to scrutinize their actions, past and present?
Copyrights have become neither, save an asset for megacorps. Until something's done about it (i'm not holding my breath) I'll be figuratively flippin' the bird with my Apex player's handy-dandy "loopholes".

  15. Or rather.... on Compulsory Licensing for Online Music? · · Score: 1

I'm not saying it doesn't entitle me to make my own, I'm just saying that the same person who sold me my DVD copy isn't compelled to provide me with any other copies.
Make 'em for my own use? Damned right I can.

  16. Can you spell M-O-N-O-P-O-L-Y? on Compulsory Licensing for Online Music? · · Score: 1

Or maybe "collusion"? Take your pick.
I don't like the government meddling all that much either (something about them inevitably fucking up bigtime. right, california?) but if they're not going to hit them with an antitrust suit, these dinosaurs really _are_ monolithic enough to cockblock any forays to distribute music over the internet.
You can argue over whether it's a good or bad idea (probably with you on it being the latter), but anything that raises public consciousness of what those weasels who are artificially inflating the price of CDs are up to isn't all bad in my book.

  17. Not getting it. on Compulsory Licensing for Online Music? · · Score: 1

    >However, making the ability to copy something different depending on the medium is another thing entirely.
What? I own a DVD copy of "Suicide Kings". If I want to (Macrovision aside), I can copy it onto a VHS tape. Exactly what laws have I broken?
No, buying a DVD copy does not entitle me to a VHS/laserdisc/etc. copy of the film, but if I want to make my own for my own use, why the fuck shouldn't I be able to?

  18. Methinks you're missing the point. on Bacteria to Destroy Greenhouse Gases · · Score: 1

Ice-9 (in Vonnegut-land) was a seed crystal o' ice that existed at, well... warmer temperatures, turning all potable water into ice. Sorry for the spoiler there, but the book's (Cat's Cradle) still really good. Honest.
Not saying ice can't have other forms, but the ice-plus and ice-minus that I'm speaking of are (get this) bacteria that cause the seeding of ice; ice-plus and ice-minus cause the raising and lowering of effective freezing points, respectively. Other seeded forms of ice are all nice and well, but a bacteria that can effectively cause fluctuations in freezing point? Damn, that's some sexy tech. Also, really, really scary.

  19. Unfortunately, Ice-Nine isn't science fiction. on Bacteria to Destroy Greenhouse Gases · · Score: 1

As is, I only play against friends I know in servers we set up. Cheatery is punished by buying the first round at the bars. There I don't mind cheating quite as much; rather than get bent out of shape, I can just get drunk. Win win as opposed to the servers I've been on with cats with unnatural aim... out of their butts...

  25. Funny thing about the internet. on Full GPL Game Company - Nevrax · · Score: 1

Nothing more than a bunch of packets floating around from here to there and everywhere.
Back in the day, you _knew_ who the cheaters were so it was easy enough to not play with them. On the Internet, identity is borderline impossible to verify and cheating is the order of the day. To deny that if people can cheat and get away with it they will is to bury your head in the sand.
So if you particularly enjoy playing well with others and getting butchered by those who don't, feel free to just keep on playing. The rest of us will keep on looking for greener pastures. Just wake me up when we actually find some.
