The problem with doing away with your military is that you would have to persuade everyone else to do the same. Police corruption , if handled by a private security firm/s would just shift the corruption to another organisation. Less laws are a good thing , just keep to the core of sensible ones
If the government was non-existent then we would still need a budget to handle inflation and what not (unless we had major reform)
I agree on the last point entirely , though a lot of people still like paper hard copies and printing is expensive
If They didn't think the people could cope with hearing about the devastation of the weapon , and did not think it appropriate to report the after effects, then the weapon should never have been used. It certainly should never have been used on a civilian target , At-least this quash shows that perhaps they had a little shame about it
Don't forget the military , plenty of Mercenaries out there to do that job. Police , forget about it . countless security companies and organised crime rackets to do protection. Review of laws and making new laws , well there are plenty of private companies who can review legal papers. Budget , who needs the cabinet , Plenty of accountancy firms. Who needs public libraries when there are book shops.
Tiger also ships with KSH now , Which is another nod in the direction of UNIX geeks (not that it was that hard to just install it). It is very much, fully scriptable , and anything its missing can easily be added
The significant fight as i would see it , will be in the laptop sector. With the rise in popularity of SFF PCs and the growing abundance of laptops which are also used for Games,i can see the rush being towards as you say , reducing power requirements and heat. Laptop graphics chips have come on leaps and bounds , Lets hope the trend continues. I really do not like large loud systems , Not that i do much Gaming on a PC or Mac these days but when i do i want to be able to have it at an enjoyable level without requiring a nuclear reactor and liquid nitrogen
No , Linux plays fine . Just the games makers (who often insist on using Direct-x as opposed to the more open and more widely supported OpenGL)and Graphics card manufacturers (specifically the chip makers) do not always produce reasonable drivers for the OS
I didn't know about those (not being in america and not owning a TV)... Ouch Gap and "Straight male fashion designer Calvin Klein" commercials.. Jeeesh
"Do "newbs" know what HAL or curses are or even necessarily the differences between KDE and GNOME? His use of terminology would be baffling if I didn't know a fair amount about Linux"
Im sorry Dave, I can't let you know that please RTFM
Its probably just reserved memory space. I have ubuntu running on a machine with 256MB of ram and it runs perfectly well. I think its down to how much RAM the DE reserves , which does not mean the ram is not available. If it bother you though "apt-get install kubuntu " then remove gnome if you wish
Yes pretty much,if you want to really simplify things. At the user level they should feel very similar (Depending on your installed Desktop environment or if its pure text mode, your installed shells). The differences are very much admin level differences, the average Luser would not have to worry, bar of course if you wanted to install some programs then you may run in to trouble (of-course on most my systems installs are purely admin level, so its a moot point)
They are two different OS and run on different kernels for a start(note that linux is just a kernel anyway) Linux has a broader compatibility with x86 hardware Solaris has by default a better permissions system Linux is under the GNU GPL and thus a little freer than OpenSolaris Solaris has far better NFS support , not that you would notice unless your running with allot of clients Solaris is certified POSIX complient and linux is just pretty much POSIX compliant (mainly due to the cost of being declared posix compliant , and the rate the linux kernel evolves) Those are some of many many many differences.
Honestly i think your Jumping the gun a little. This wont happen to solaris , solaris will always be solaris and compatible with itself . If this distros goes so far as to be incompatible with Solaris main then it will cease to be a solaris. Solaris is an OS as opposed to linux which is just a kernel
One you think you can manage/are skilled for.. One where the people are friendly( managment and co-workers) One with good benefits. One with prospects. All else failing , take what's going and find your head as you go.
Yes exactly like that ,Two wrongs rarely make a right

Its really quite sad
Nothing wrong with having a monopoly , its when you start to abuse that monopoly that problems occur .

Tachyon Eddy and son doesn't quite have the same ring to it as Steptoe and son (Sanford and son was the US version , incase you were wondering)
Wouldn't that be "they are Really Whack(ed)"
Now all they need to do is hit a tachyon eddy and we can reach Cardasia
