    Suse not sucesfull ? it has been and still is a massive success in Europe , one of the primary reasons novell bought it . I am a confrimed Debian and ubuntu user , but i really do have alot of respect for suse.

    In germany ,shops have Suse 9.3 right now sitting right next to windows on the shelves . If you call that unsucsesfull then fair be it ? I am at a loss to understand though how you can call it unsucsesfull after it turned massive proffits and got bought out for a large sum of cash.

    Do you work for microsoft marketing by any chance ;)

    Too true , perusing this it does seem like a 17 page publicity stunt(I am just skimming ..)

    So tiger direct gets an advertisment on slashdot , apple computers gets advertisments on legal journals and other areas that would not normaly feature them.

    I think we have the making of a fairly good conspiracy theory here .

    Ofcourse it could backfire and open up a whole host of legitimate(and i lose the term loosly)law-suits from companys such as Tiger Games and um Tony the Tiger.

    Could end up with them having to rename themselves to -Direct (Read Minus direct).

    Tiger Games made a lot of small LCD games and tabletops , i used to have heaps and this was well before 96.I think more recently they made the game.com (bit of a failure)

    Ofcourse the same can be applied to a law suit against Tiger-direct(a retailer) against apple for the use in OS X Tiger(An operating system).

    Tiger-direct is their name not Tiger , What about Tiger games(LCD games).

    The problem here is Tiger is a fairly commen word. Tiger-direct have no hope here and are just going to waste money .Even if they are succesfull(I highly doubt they will be) they risk a counter suit from a lot of other places.

    That one could cause a few problems for me
    I would say it is perfectly permissable to give a copy of a game to a freind. I don't know many people who havn't at one time got a copy of a game from their mates or vice-versa. I think its fairly well coverd by fair use ,under most resonible legal systems that is.

    Other people will have the opinion that its wrong to do so .

    ? Are these question ala university question ,for example .. so long as you can back up your belife it is correct .
    If not then i would fairly say that it could lead to a few qualms.

    Agreed , it should be labeld CMD(command) or Meta or something along those lines.
    I find it rather handy on my laptop , i carefully removed the windows branding on my laptop keyboard and labeld it with a \|/ type symbol , That key i have marked for all manner of shortcuts .

    Red-hat has not backed a looser .Its become one of the companys at the fore-front of the OSS wave, And id say its doing a resonibly good job surfing.

    Selling support and hardware is a very profitable bussiness .others who use this bussiness model in part or in whole are companys such as Sun Microsystems ,IBM , Novell , Apple to name but a few .

    They make a fair load off of support contracts. the only diffrence is that Red-hat uses a hell of alot more OSS than the others. I can get linux for free or i can choose to pay for enterprise level support froma company such as Novell for example or Red-hat .

    And last time i checked all of those companys were not running at a loss

    Yes , well I submitted a few bug reports to several diffrent linux programs.
    So do hundreds of thousands of others(if not multiple millions , anyway a really really big number ;) ).
    So where is our cheque ?.
    This is not why we do it atall though. We do it for the love of the systems and to see our OS improve.
    Thats the GPL way . Freedom! in its various forms.

    I pay for Debian (order CDs reqularly) and i donate to a few projects.Its my choise to do so .. there is nothing forcing me to do this.
    Not even a moral obligation , Contribution is part of the GPL was too.

    dont forget how many bug reports that probably get passed back to RedHat proper from projects like Cent-Os too .

    So remember the part the community plays in all this .

    Anyway..
    Redhats bussiness model is not based on OS sales anyway it is based primarly on Support .If he really needs the support he will have to pay for it from redhat or another source.

    Wow that argument is so far off it hurts.
    Pull the firearm and the robber shoots you before you've had a chance to lock and load. Seriously professional criminals if they belive the target is going to be armed will be equaly well armed and ready , you go for a conceled weapon .. Bang your dead. Prevention as opposed to cure .

    You come into my house with the intention of shootine me ,then i will either disarm you and beat the crap out of you or you will shoot me -Simple as that .If you broke into my house with the intention of shooting me ,If i have a gun i pull it on your and you pull yours on me.
    What hapens then .. eh. Either you shoot me or i shoot you , Either way someone could die , and honestly i couldnt live with that if i took a human life.

    I used to work as a bouncer and im fairly well trained in self-defense so perhaps im not a perfect example . though..

    Ever hear of prevention being better than cure .
    Well if you cant toaly prevent it then why do you want a fatal resolve .Why not a non-leathel form of defense.
    such as a bola gun or net gun. or how about a some form of spray or a high powerd tazer.
    a weapon that will knock the attacker down , but not kill (prefebly unconcious but definantly subdued)

    Giving you enough time to disarm them and take the weapon and or phone the police and get the F*ck out of the area to wait for trained profesionals to deal with it.

    ;) got me wrong there , as a unix systems admin i understand all to well that computers are for more than games(infact i dont think i play games too often on my various systems).

    Its not the converting of games or vice versa its the target audiance ,The Xbox apeals more to those who use the pc as a games device as opposed to those who use games on consoles.

    This takes out a major upgrade factor from the pc for those gamers.
    Why upgrade your system if all you need is this console that costs 150.
    This bites into a segment of windows sales .

    I use OS X , Linux ( Debian based mainly) , solaris and netBSD. So i am not what you would call a PC hardcore gamer and those systems as of yet are nearly all rather lacking for games(Thanks to many linux ports ,cedega and the wine team , this is begining to change.The Mac always has a fairly good selection though).

    so in sumation , its not the games so much as the appeal

    I remember my PC of 4 years ago , Brand spanking new Athlon thunderbird with an awe-inspring 512MB of ram and a great GF2 pro , and a hugh twin -30GB HDD in a raid array (that and my iMac g3 , guess which one i still use as a media server).
    it cost around 3 grand in total . Today i could build a system that with an 80GB HDD , an athlon-xp 2500+ , 512MB DDR RAM a better graphics card all for around 1/15th the price , so what cost me then 3000 will today (for something alot better) cost 150-200 (self built ofcourse , 300- if i bought it as a complete PC).

    I currently have sitting in my room a sun Ultra-sparc server from 98 or 99 which retailed i belive for about 20,000 back then (no idea the exact price), cost me 200 a couple of years ago .

    Just some anicdotal evidence for you

    Cheating .. well would you be ok if they then allowed the pitcher to have a mechanical aid to fire off the shot . or perhaps a laser sight or targeter attached to their sun-glasses ? perhaps a small computer to relay diagnostic information as to the wind speed and direction and give them a rough ideal tragectory. using an optical device to filter out light so you can better see the ball is still an artifical aid , no matter how ingenious .

    Im not the biggest sports fan ever , but from freinds of mine who are , its about doing the best you can and having a laugh , not using a prostetic to give yourself the edge.

    If i were say playing a game online , is it then ok for someone to use a hack on their graphics card driver(a case came up a year or two ago with some offical s3 drivers i think it was that had a wall hack as a feature) to more clearly see the enemy .. its basicaly the same idea .

    just my opinion non the less

    Microsoft already has bitten into the PC games market with the xbox(The xbox whilst some hardcore console gamers like it , is more popular with the PC gamers IMHO. I have heard many ardent pc gamers saying its the first/only console they like ).

    Most importantly though , they wouldnt want to take away sales from media center PCs , It would cause a major argument with the PC-companys who make Media center PCs if it did .This is quite possibly the reason why Gates is downplaying the media center functionality. Sony would have no such worrys however and may play on that , which could in the end force microsofts hand .. we shall need to wait and see(I doubt nintendo will go that route considering their previous stance on Games only).

    I enjoy target ranges , I am a rather fine shot . I have also aided in culls(deer or foxes , riffles only ). .. alot of people are totaly taking what i said out of context , I was in essence irationalisng guns in the same way that those who oppose bittorent irationalise it. subtle points often get lost here in the heat .

    Fair enough i am totaly against guns for self defense , but not for culls or sport.I just dont think most people should be allowed them at home , difrent story if your a farmer , i assume you have yours locked safely away and its primary purpose is putting animals out of their missery(if your still a farmer that is).

    I have nothing against that , nor do i have anything against clay pigeon shoots.

    Just letting you know i was meerly making a point as opposed to preaching my belifes.

    I seem to be getting paraphrased to hell here , I mean when did i say guns were evil (I agree the use of guns to kill is wrong and thats the persons evil not the gun)I only said that the argument exists...

    Ah well flames do arise though. ;) I also forget the tone of my voice dosn't come over to well online ..

    Just checked it was actualy bought at the end of march(i recived it as a gif in the middle of april so was unsure). so i guess im just outside the region of an upgrade , ah well , its still a great machine and for the price i paid i really can't complain(Read : 0.00)

    ;) not too much of a loss really as i didn't pay for it , it was a gift from a happy customer ( i gave them another box as some software they needed for work required an x86 machine , so in truth i spent next to nothing other than bits i had laying around the house.)

    Speaking as someone who got an emac last month i must say this , GAHHHH.

    And does anyone have any info on if apple still runs an upgrade program(if it was bought just before a refresh , i think this one was purchased in february or so ) and how long before the refresh would count. I am going to dig around and call apple myself , but any insight would be much apreciated.

    I used to work as for lack of a better word a forest-ranger , i know about culls . I think they should be legal for that reason alone (perhaps hunting , but thats not in my field).They should be kept locked in a heavily gaurded armory at all other times . People trained in their use should be hired to go on culls , or even better they could pay for the privilidge.

    What i object to is the average person being allowed a gun in their own homes , Fair enough other people disagree , thus is life.
    Just pointing out that so you understand my position on guns.
