No games house has ever gone under due open source,its capitalism and the free market. If you cannot compete (IE: someone makes the same thing for free , that is as good , better or merely aceptable) then you will go under and be another failed bussiness. This has very little to do with OSS software , rather i would say its missmanagment !
So why exactly would OSS groups cloning old games be removing creative jobs from the industry ? Wouldnt that be removing uncreative jobs as you said origionaly how unorigional it is , if people want creativity and origionality in the games market (I know i do , im very much adicted to wario ware) then they will buy it , if people want remakes they will buy or download an OSS version(I love remakes too , im playing super mario 64 DS right now). Frozen bubble is not denting taitos sales of puzzle-bobble.
ofcourse to counter that argument , i could easilly say truckers have to pay taxes aswell. if the people are providing the service then the service should be free to all people,not censured by some small moralist core to be restrictive to the viewing habits they deem acceptable.

Honestly have a look around some local pc repair shops and ask, Ive been able to pick up masses of SIMM and EDO RAM for nothing atall or handed them 5 quid to say thanks . SDRAM is rather pricy still though ( i have about 2GB laying around incase of a rainy day) ive seem 1GB moduals go for far more than DDR SDRAM.
My thoughts exactly , (this is why i should learn to hit preview ) Though depending on the model it may not be that bad. obviously compared to some mips or ARM powered router the drain will be astronomical , but alot less than most modern PCs .

It could make a rather nice router if the thing isnt too bulky and you can find an ethernet card or two to go in it (I assume ISA slots) you can also pick up the RAM for probably nothing at local PC shops as they tend to stock pile stuff like this.
if however he wants to use it as a test bed for learning linux then go ahead this distro seems perfect. you could even get it running X11 with a minimalist window manager for your gui fix if you try. Certainly would make an excelent project for getting to grips with the system. I cut my x86 teeth on a 386 and later a 486dx so i have fond memorys of those days , that and doom when i was running dos... i digress.
Other than that if you want a more productive toy , you can cheap old macs (greybox ppc) or pentium 1 or 2s for next to nothing(ive picked up a couple from people for 0.00).
I really do love distros such as these , they are to me the spirit of linux,running on the older systems right up to a 64 cpu server.
Thanks , does it also have bluetooth ? as i could certainly see a fair few uses for it (other than some cool games) when the homebrew scene really takes off. Right now though the homebrew scene is rather static.
Hey Infact , i just created a page on my computer so i can control all the major functions of my debian box , using webmin;) . i imagine witha few tweaks to the interface i could easily have it useable on a psp
Its not a hoax , though it is just a web interface that could be used equaly well from a laptop , a pda with wifi , or any other device that can browse your intranet

Honestly Tiger is not just an minor update , Some serious OS functionality has been changed, the kernel has been optimised for g5s , most of the core utilites have recived major function overhalls,the subsystem is heavily updated, The command line is now far far more functional from a sysadmins point of view , the networking interfaces have recived a large ammount of added functionality and improvements , Developer tools are in vs 2 , 64-bit VM support,Fine grain locking has been added which is wonderfull news if you have duel procesors (or more on an x-serve), The dashboard is rather cool and another well integrated feature ala exposè,native support for a new generation of file formats , PDF rendering updated to vs1.5(remember pdf is part of the core ),Core image and vidio are excelent improvment... etc etc etc those are a few of my faviourits(include apple including KSH by default ).
personaly these are far greater changes than those from windows 95 to 98SE or ME , and definantly far greater than that of windows 2000 to xp , and i would say that its a greater upgrade than for example suse 9.1 to 9.2 or more comparable to the diference between debian sarge and debian Sid
That made me smile too , not to mention the fact they are including ksh now and the spotlight command line tools are just begging to be included in my some of my scripts
I hate to reply to myself but i need to add this.. I am not blaming the developers , i am blaming Marketing and publishers who push these things out the door without proper testing.
