Ok, fine then.
I received ~500KBps, KiloBytes per second, or around 4000kbps, kilobits per second.
It took me about 5 minutes to download it. Check your firewall to make sure ports 6881 to 6889 are directed to your computer to improve your speeds.
Also, may I direct you to http://www.bittorrent.com/FAQ.html#firewall if you're still having problems.

No firewalls at all. I'm connected directly to one of the ethernet ports on our router. I'm not even running a packet filter on the router. Our PIX is on a different ethernet interface.

Of course as soon as I posted that, my download speed jumped by a factor of about 5. I'm now downloading at 42kB/s. That's not too bad.

How long have you let it run? BT can be very slow to start, especially with the full force of a slashdotting.

Do you have the port(s) open? Many people do not, so the two of you can't connect.

To clear up a few misconections:
1. BT does not need any ports open, but it speeds things considerably. I went from 6KBps to 380KBps by opening 1 port.
2. Torrent files can be mirrored. There are links to the Corel mirrors, which everyone should be using for full effectiveness.
BT does connect to a centra tracking server, but the communication is minimal. Most tracking servers are on sufficient connections to handle just about anything.
3. BT takes time to connect with other. You are connecting to many people, and those connections take time to establish. Be patience and thankful someone took the time to provide you with something free.
4. BT is capable of extremely high speeds. You will probably run in to limitations in Internet Connection, Local Network, Hard Disk, Processor, and PCI bus limitations before the software limits you (most likely in that order).
5. BT is bad in ______ way (fill in the blank). Thanks for taking time out of your busy day to point out a deficiency in something you paid nothing for. Please try fixing the problem, rather than complaining about it next time.

Well try the .mov torrent posted here, checking that your firewall is set up correctly and that your ISP does not cap the default BT ports. This is the case with many ISPs, and you may need to change ports from the default range of 6881-6889. I'm getting 700 kB/s and rising on a 8/1 Mbit DSL connection.

It is entirely normal for BT to begin slowly and then speed up - you need to have a few pieces to offer in order to strike up good piece-trading. As for the notion that it is better for small files, *every* manner of transferring data is better for small files. The strength of BT is that it cuts large files up into smaller pieces to transfer separately.

As I don`t have access to my own machine right now, how many seeds and peers are there in the swarms? Is the tracker performing ok? Has anyone posted the .torrents to alt.binaries.torrents ?

If you have 6 MB/s 768 Kb/s upstream like some cable providers are lettting people buy (It's what I have) then 300KB/s is not unusual. 500Kb/s is a bit much, you'd need more upstream bandwidth.

Plus....T1 = 1.54 Mb/s or approximately 160KB/s

The other factor with bittorrent is WHEN you join the torrent and how much upstream bandwidth the seeders have. If you join in the beginning when the torrent is small then things will go slow. All it takes is for one seeder to join with a big connection to get things going.

Understand the difference between a .torrent file, which is most often served by web-servers which are being slashdotted in this instance, and can be mirrored, and the torrent tracker, which supplies the IPs of some of the peers and seeds currently in the swarm.

Is the tracker really slashdotted in this case? -I never heard of that happening before, but if anything can do it, then a Starwars Torrent on Slashdot might... Of course, once you have a .torrent file your BT client will keep checking the tracker every 5 mins or so until it gets some IPs of peers to start trading with, after that there should be no bottleneck.

That's better than getting it after the site is Slashdotted, the poor bastards running the site desperately try to find a different server to host it, and then when they finally do find one, it is subsequently either Slashdotted, linked to by TheForce.net, or linked to by any of a hundred different huge-ass blogs.

Also, you should never be getting 9kB/s with BitTorrent. I've seen torrents with 1 seed and 135 leechers that gave me more than 9kB/s. If it's that low, then something is obviously wrong with your settings. That's like saying "Comcast sucks, my cable modem never goes faster than 33K!" There comes a time when you have to realize that if what you're experiencing is so much worse than what everyone else experiences, then the problem is probably on your end.

And here's a hint; I don't count "free" when it's part of a package. It's arguable that the common use of "free" is misleading; it's not "free" of obligation if you have to buy something else (e.g. breakfast cereal toy). But something like "free" broadband or "free" mobile phones definitely twist this misuse of the word way beyond breaking point. You wouldn't go for XYZ package if it didn't include the "free" broadband/phone, so it's not really free, it's included in the cost.

I'm getting about 9kB/s on a full T1 to Sprint. It's an empty connection to one of the best providers.

Maybe not so good after all? Or maybe you just misconfigured it.

BT is just too slow to use on anything other than small files.

That's double bullshit. I've downloaded DVD images with BT just fine, and in fact small files is exactly what it's NOT good for.

Already downloaded it via iGetter for OS X. Got 535k speeds, max for Comcast 4mbit connection.

I also took that same file, dropped it into iDVD using a modern metal/machine theme and boom. Quick DVD to watch on my TV. I even played it on a 30 inch Syntax LCD hdtv and even starting out at 600x400 in size, it looks very sweet for a free web release fan film.

Now I will be careful to not charge for any copies, or materials as all my friends want a DVD of mine to call their own, hehehe

Is there a such thing as an .AVI (well any playback medium, really...) with subtitles?

The directors cuts of the Star Trek movies have a subtitle commentary from Michael Okuda, an artist for the various versions of the franchise, who talked about some of the interesting little things that went into the making of the movie. I'd like to see Revelations with a commentary describing how they did some of the stuff.

So why do I want movie playback with the ability to select captions? Well, thing is, I think the poster I'm replying to has a bigger need for the subtitles than I do. Since with an AVI, to the best of my knowledge, you'd need to make the captions part of the footage, it would mean making several different versions of the video. But if there was a playback mechanism that supported multiple tracks like DVDs do, then we'd both be happy.

Come to think of it, it'd be pretty darned handy for indie film developers to have a DVD-esque playback package. Anything like that today?

If anyone were to make subtitles for this, it'd be best to make them in .srt format -- supported by many media players such as BSPlayer. It's also easily convertible to subtitle tracks for inclusion on a DVD.

No, they're standalone files. Windows Media Player supports the SAMI format natively -- subtitle workshop can convert among the various formats easily.

No, i don't believe you can embed subtitles into normal playable formats right now. What happens is you make an srt file of the same name as the avi/whatever and then use BSplayer or whatever to play the subtitles, picking up on the name

OGM and MKV are interesting, but very much non-mainstream. If you want mainstream with subtitles and multiple audio tracks, go with MP4, which is a derivative of QuickTime's .MOV and what most apple software now produces.

If you have a good media player such as VLC (which will become illegal unless software patents are defeated in Europe! Europeans call your reps NOW!) and the video and srt file are named the same thing (excluding the difference in extension), the player will give you the option of showing subtitles. SUB/IDX files also are an option if you want multiple subtitle files.

Or, as an alternative, you could use OGM or MKV (matroska) as a container for subs and video. Fansubbers do this often with anime and other movies.

Absolutely. I believe QuickTime supports subtitles and multiple audio tracks. I absolutely know that ogg supports them, because i have downloaded ogg's "From The Wild," which I could watch in Japanese, Japanese with English subs, or in English Dub (with or without subs). I didn't need to deal with an external subtitles file, it was right there in the ogg, all I had to do was select which track I wanted.

So, there, ogg ain't just for tree huggers and long hairs. Amazingly enough, it is sufficiently developed to be 100% useful, and "just work." It surprised me, too!

I'm not sure about possessing a patent-infringing product (I believe this is legal), but the actual creation of the product is, in theory, done in France I believe, which is in the EU. So I think it's in the clear thus far.

My local megaplex has two screens have something i think is called RWCS that shows the text on a led text box mounted on the back of the theater. Its backwards so my guess is you bring a mirror with you to the theater and watch the texts reflection and the movie. I'm not deaf so i'm not 100% sure how it works. I've only seen it on the big movie that is playing on half a dozen screens so I don't know if every movie is supported.

Actually there's plenty of filters out there for windows folks that'll overlay subtitles from a file with the same name as the video. (In a format like .sub .srt .ssa and others) Even my standalone DVD player supports external subtitle files for avi file playback.

Most 'codec packs' for things like xvid and divx should include a subtitle filter. iirc, there's ffmpeg (I think that's the name anyway), it handles subs, multiple audio tracks, juggling which version of divx/xvid decodes what specific version files, as well as allowing you to tweak all sorts of xvid/divx settings.

The theater usually provides the mirror. It's like the glass that public speakers use on floor teleprompters, where the audience just sees a piece of glass but the speaker sees the words reflected from the floor. That's mounted on a black stand and the whole thing adjusts like the mirror in your car.

Well, here's U.S. Code Section 271:

(a) Except as otherwise provided in this title, whoever without

Notice it includes "use" as a patent violation. The likelihood that a patent owner would sue an individual for the use of something that infringes a patent is slim to none, but technically, I believe it is infringement.

This view is upheld by a Canadian court case I found: http://www.dww.com/newsletter/may26_04.htm. Canadian law has a similar "use" provision, so I have no reason to believe it would be any different in this country.

There is a subtitle track for the DVD version film but I know that the Panic Struck folks are going to wait a while before before the DVD image is made available for download. Check back in the next few weeks.

QuickTime is an open format, and it is THE standard for complex multimedia content. Hell, it even supports Flash movies as tracks, but you probably didn't know that.

Some of the codecs, unfortunately, are proprietary.

The acting may have been poor in E1/E2, but these people seriously beat them out in the bad acting department. Un-freakin-believable.

I take it back. After watching this film it's apparent that ANY of the cast in the real Star Wars films is several orders of magnitude better. Hell, even the dude that played Kyle Katarn in Jedi Knight did a much better job of acting.

The special effects sucked pretty hard too. Maybe I'm just desensitized to seeing flashy graphics and such in most films (amateur or otherwise) these days, but they certainly did not impress.

Many of the CGI scenes looked too "stiff", especially the Tie Fighter chase. The costumes were pretty much OK, but Vader's "control panel" was crooked in one scene (don't know how they missed that) and the Stormtroopers weren't even close to being equal height.

The lightsaber battle was downright horrible. I know it can be difficult to choreograph a fight scene, especially when the actors don't have proper training, but couldn't they have acted out the saber fighting in a slower, more controlled manner and then sped up the footage to make it appear faster? This would have allowed for more intricate motions and given a larger impression of skill.

All in all, it was entertaining to see but it won't be remaining on my drive.

Yes, actually. Consumer grade fluorescents are extremely variable in color temperature, thus making them useless for filmmaking. When using fluorescents, you must purchase expensive fluorescents designed for photography which have a very consistent color temperature. I know a DP who did a shoot in a supermarket, and they had to replace ALL of the fluorescents in the store with expensive pro stuff. Now we know why filmmaking budgets are so astronomical!

Except for the acting. :(

The CGI looks amazingly good and pretty much everything else seems quite professional too. The acting is probably on par with Hayden Christensen in Episode 2, i.e. mostly not very pleasing.

But I wouldn't only blame the actors, so many extraordinarily good actors played quite bad in the Star Wars movies. Go figure...

Actually, I thought the acting talent was
'perfectly sufficient', at least in the main characters. Obviously they couldn't afford Hollywood-grade lighting and cameras, and this is what gives that 'my neighbours on vacation'-veneer.
But, if you make a conscious effort to ignore that (and if you succed - it's pretty hard), you might come to agree with me on the acting.

Its not just the acting - its the look of the characters as well. It seems like a bunch of goth chicks just got together and decided to make a movie. They need to work on their hair/makeup so it doesnt seem as much like Star Wars versus Dracula.

Imagine that you have a fluoro on one side of an actor's face that is say, 3800K, and another on another side that turns out to be 3200K. In the exposure, you will have a sort of white color on one side of their face, and maybe a kind of green cast on the other side. If you are dealing with only one frame, you could carefully adjust the color and take out the green from the one side of their face by isolating that area.

When you are dealing with moving images, it is no longer practical to zero in on one part of an image and color balance only that part. You have to color correct the entire frame, and if the color temperature varies throughout the exposure, you will always get a variation, which will look strange. Of course, some people might like it this way, but it would probably look to most people like something was wrong with the exposure.

Seriously. If you are going to put that much work into it, why not get some drama students? Or hire an acting coach? The CGI stuff and space scenes were fabulous, as were the set designs.

However, the Jedi instill no sence of being Jedi. The dialog is inane and the acting terrible. And not to be sexist or anything but the men handle the light saber much better than the women. Will fan fiction please notice that if you're not good with one light saber don't try to use more than one. The most powerful Jedi only used one. Obi-wan, Luke, Vader, Yoda: one saber. There's a reason for that.

Also, the story isn't that great. There is *much* better fan fiction out there. I know they really couldn't do too much in the time span that they had, but there is better stuff out there.

In conclusion: The space visuals and ship design are professional. The scene backdrops and explosions were very good. Costumes were ok to amaturish. Casting, acting, and blocking was amature.

Lil SW Joke

Obi-Wan and Luke were both very hungry after their long speeder trip to that wretched hive of scum and villiany, Mos Eisley. They settled themselves in a cantina and ordered a big dinner of noodles, rice, sweet and sour dewback, and other oriental style goodies.
The food soon arrived and they set to. Obi-Wan handled his chopsticks deftly, quickly and securely picking up a noodle here, a prawn ball there. He soon sat back satisfied, and let out a quiet burp.
Luke, on the other hand, was in a right state. He just couldn't get the hang of the sticks, and had dropped far more food on the table and down his front than he had managed to get into his mouth. He sat, surrounded by rice and noodle debris, still as hungry as when he started.
Seeing his pupil in such distress, the Jedi Master leant over to dispense some of the wisdom of his years.

I made "Funny" comments lost 4 points. Seriously, it has made reading comments on Slashdot (the best part of the site: much more fun than the articles/stories themselves) much better. Since I read comments only 1 and up, all the +2,+3,+4 "funny" comments are gone, and I get an occational "+5, Funny" comment modded down to a 1.

When I moderate, I read at -1, and I do see a couple statements that are truly funny (and occationally mod those up), but seriously, SO many comments were labeled "funny" that I just couldn't take it anymore.

The special effects were good, that's for sure. But honestly, this production needs light as badly as Doom 3. I actually used QuickTime's brightness and contrast controls on it.

And another thing. What's with people and using Sorenson 3? This is the fucking year 2005. Use XviD, 3ivx or at the very least DivX for crying out loud. All are viable options on QuickTime. And whose brilliant idea was it to encode with the black bars?

It's about reaching the largest audience.

It takes effort to get those codecs installed and not everyone has them installed. Easier to make a video with a widely supported codec than to try and explain to people: go here, click download, install, follow the directions, if you get stuck -- sorry.

I think this movie proves that a bunch of Star Wars geeks with access to good effects and no acting or writing talent can do just as good of a job as George Lucas. Imagine what would have happened here if they actually had a budget. If anything, it leads me to believe that an all-CG Star Wars film done by fans might turn out far better than the crap that episodes 1 and 2 have been.

Most high school senior drama groups are better actors than the drivil they got for this film.

And better looking, too. The girl who plays Zhanna has an overbite the size of a death star. The main character looks very tired and middle-aged, and in many scenes simply greasy. The guy's sister has the teeth of a shark.

Casting is horrible in other ways: people who are supposed to be sisters look absolutely nothing alike.

I think the best actor in the whole thing was the black guy in the holo at about 30:00.

The writing is more uninspired and dragging than even episode two. I'm sorry, but even Lucas was a better director than whoever directed this. At least he had a decent cinemetographer and casting director to back him up.

Also: I love how the "good jedi" says to the main character: "There is no one who hates Zhanna more than I do." Palpatine looks like a giant baby with wrinkles. And has a lisp.

With all the money they spent on SFX and sound effects, one would think they could spend a little bit of time finding decent actors.

Torrents are binary data. They are small, around 30k, but they nonetheless cannot be posted as-is. If someone were to try uuencoding it, chances are 99.9999% that Slashcode (the automated parsing system used for comments here) would mess it up.

There is a reason why hex dumps are not used to transmit binary data as ASCII. For starters, there is no integrity check -- how can you be sure that the file you copied is the same file posted? Second, this method does not provide compression or a way of making the encoded file smaller. Third ... this method will also succomb to the Slashcode effect -- corruption is almost a certainty. There are many more reason... I'll leave the rest up to your imagination.

Oh yeah... one more thing. A hex dump of the file would not necessarily be huge. Consider that in hexadecimal, each byte is represented by two alphanumeric characters. Knowing that a char is 1 byte and assuming that there are no spaces or other separators in the "encoded" output, the resulting file would be "human-readable" and exactly twice as large.

Ok, this is the torrent file base64 encoded (http://www.fourmilab.ch/webtools/base64/#Download ). Just copy/paste it into a file (make sure the first Byte is a "Z" not a space) and decode it into a torrent file. Just tested it and it worked.

Yeah that was kind of a joke. I use Gentoo in my server environment at work and even the optimizations (small thought they can be) are good in bulk. The flexablity you spoke of is excellent.

Why should I run X on my mail proxy? A GUI for dumb admins is the only reason I can think of. And we don't hire those...much.

I'm home and my linux box is on a KVM with the windows system.(heresy I know) It's arguably a step-child but I still love Gentoo with all my heart ;) Until recently it was just a dedicated video re-encoder/PVR. So when I want to do something new I have to compile 3 other dependancies. I deal with it, as being part of the "world" is a great and holy thing. Gentoo rules the planet.

Hardly. The characters you see when opening that "text" file are your browser's effort to interpret the binary data as ASCII (or whatever encoding you like to use). It fails miserably as a result, probably because it isn't Korean after all :)

It's interesting to see bittorrent working on such a large scale type of thing. Notice that the webserver hosting the .torrent files have gone down, and as of now 1338 (darn it I'm # 1338) people are downloading it sucessfully. While it is true that it is going to take me 2 hours to get it all, I remember the days of old 56k modems when a 200mb download would take 2 days, so this is fast enough for me.

For those of you going slower then about 30K down, make sure you have holes poked in your firewalls.

Also, for the rest of us, leave the thing running for a while after you finish getting it please, it 's sad to see the number of seeders drop as quickly as they are....

Also, the Slashcode has inserted spaces as the 49th character in each data line, which does rather render the UUE much less coherent than it ought to be. However, I'm not feeling motivated enough to recompile my uuencode command with a non-default line length, especially as many (crappy (Windows)) versions of UUdecode get pissy when you do that to their input. If you manually remove those extra spaces from the input, it actually does decode. Someone want to post a perl script for that?

Actually not too bad in places. Obviously a lot of effort went into this and it's quite fun and surreal here and there. Not too far off of made-for-TV type sci fi fodder series in terms of feel and quality. Somewhat brought down by terrible acting and unfortunate sound levels for dialogue which were just too quiet. Space special effects were excellent, just goes to show it's been a looonnnnngggg time since ILM owned that one.

Very unfortunate rendition of the Emperor turned any section with him into a comedy.

The .torrent file contains a "bencoded" dictionay (hash table) of information about the torrent. Some of the information in it is SHA-1 hashes of the chunks of files, but it is all UTF-8 encoded so any web browsers without UTF font supprt wouldn't be able to look at it though.

It definatly would not pass the lameness filter though.

Bittorrent question

Riddle me this...

I'm downloading this right now with bittorrent, and my upstream is 2-3 times more than my downstream! I thought Bittorrent worked on the principle of "I give you 1kb, you give me 1kb back" so shouldn't my downstream be at least equal to my upstream? I've only downloaded 131MB, but I've already dished out 346MB to other peers.

And yes, I do have the ports opened in my firewalls.

Else I do recommend Azureus. It MALLOCs more memory than a MySQL server running on a large site with large tables.., I know I can compare both. A friend of mine uses Azureus to test his compile of Linux 2.6 on a medium system. It's even better than running the dejagnu tests on GCC when compiling it to test memory+hd+kernel. If you can run Azureus, you don't need more memory to run an SQL server for an entire trading floor on teh Stock Exchange.

That's not necessarily the case. BitTorrent sometimes simply tries to use as much bandwidth as possible. You may have jumped on the torrent early - at the stages when there aren't many people with data, so your uploads will be critical in propagating data to others. In your case you've fed 2+ copies of the data to others in the download swarm and made it much more healthy. This only means that at the moment there are more people who want the file than people who have it.

It will, in most cases, average out to a tit-for-exactly-tat situation, but not always.

FYI, the rate limit on a bittorrent client is for the *upstream* bandwidth (because that's what most people have less of). If you're unhappy with your upstream bandwidth use, limit it. That's what it is there for. Your client will automatically throttle your download rate if it is necessary to do so.

For example, I have 384kbps upstream hard cap, so I tell my BT client (I'm using Azureus), to rate limit to 200kbps (leaving me some bandwidth to browse while I'm downloading). And right now I'm downloading at 3mbps (my downstream connection limit) and uploading at 200kbps. With downloads like this, I usually leave it in my seeding list for a few days afterwards to round out my upload / download share ratio (which is currently 0.065 on this file).

(So that's 76 + 2 == using 78MB of memory for Azureus, a lot, but still WAY less than Firefox with a billion tabs open)

And, my point: there is a bug in using the latest version of Azureus with anything but the Java 1.5 runtime. If you are still on Java 1.4 you will get horrible memory leaks (which is why I run Azureus on my Windows not my FreeBSD box, last I checked FreeBSD and Linux were stuck on Java 1.4).

I am suing azureus IMO the best client, I found that if you have an upstream larger than 4 uploads you can choke your ack packets and result in a very slow downstream. I use azureus' built in limiter to set my uploads to 4.

The acting is terrible. The plot always centers around a couple of dorky Jedis. Because even the fattest nerd can fit into the robes.

The effects are always good, but haven't we learned by now that the effects are not what makes for good Star Wars movies? It's the characters. Specifically, it's Han Solo.

Without someone as cool as Han Solo, Star Wars is just lame. The new movies lack anyone to fill that role, and so do all the fan films. The ultra-serious Jedi are fucking boring.

You're right about the acting. I know they worked hard on this and made it free--good for them--but it sucks. The acting ruins everthing. Even without the Hollywood looks, which are definitely not there, good acting can pull the audience into the most unrealistic plot lines.

I think the big problem is that the seriously hard-core SW geeks who make this stuff don't do it for others' enjoyment; they do it because it's the only way they will ever be in a Star Wars movie. Replacing themselves with attractive, capable actors would be defeating the purpose.

While good.. the cinematic quality isnt quite there

for instance.. voices are echoey an comm-like when they shouldnt be, for isntance in the entrance to the great hall.

The acting's generally ok... but the woman playing the emperor's hand person over/under acts, I cant quite tell, but she's definately the most "off" of all of them. Vader's voice is a tad off.. and so are some of his actions, like the force choke, it was too quick.. it didnt linger.

The holographic effects are good, as are the space /ship effects, almost equal to the current level of effects, and certainly worthy of the classic starwars movies. The extras: generally pretty good, better than the emperor's hand woman in general, except for the dancer at the beginning of the bar.

Camerawork... it's almost.. too fluid.. like a TV show... somethings' not quite right here.. not enough stationary shots that are more characteristic of the real movies. Everytime the camera pans it feels sort of like it's being shot from a home movie camera, unless it's a space-effect, in which case, it feels like the movie.

That may account for some of the odd audio.... but still, thats what MP3s normally come at and i've not heard that much distortion in normal clips i've encoded at those rates.. so I doubt that that's mostly at fault.

Other things I failed to note the first time around..

The fight in the caves, the very first one, before the evil gal reveals herself (good girl vs yellow sabre). I couldnt tell if it was a vision, or if it actually happened.. I had to view it like 2 or 3 times. Maby that's just my interpretation, but it seems that when we cut back to the 3-some, we had no real view of the body on the floor, so it seems that the sequence was completely out of place (i.e. a vision sequence).

Overall, again, very nice effort.

The music, sound effects and visual special effects are excellent; remarkably well done and I'd say better than most big-budget Hollywood productions. Amazing!

However, the acting is almost painful. This one comes off like a small town theatre group led by a soap-opera director. I keep expecting Triumph the Insult Comic Dog to pop up and start making jokes at any moment.

By the way, who's the second actress? The chick on the telescreen/command deck who makes her appearance around 00:02:00. I can't tell if that's Xena Warrior Princess, Anna Nicole Smith with a black wig, or Monica Lewinski or maybe all three morphed together. Wierd. Go look for yourself. (If it's Xena, go back to kicking butt and subplots. If it's Anna, that diet didn't last long. It's a fan film, like Revelations, but it's different from Revelations and a good swath of other fan films in that it doesn't take place directly within the Star Wars universe. While I understand that many of these fanfilms are done out of a sense of respect and admiration for the original material, it always kills me when considerable talent such as this is poured into the creative boundaries and legal obligations of an existing idea. Undoubtedly they get a lot more immediate interest in their work making a 'Star Wars' movie, but if instead they created an original story, I bet it would be a lot more enduring. They would even be able to sell their work on DVD and perhaps fund a sequel. They would be free of the shackles of an existing mythos and could dream up whatever they wanted, something new and surpassing 'Star Wars' in pure imagination and wonder. Something that would mean a lot more than just a fanfilm. No matter the production values, that is what it is. How great would it be to see an ORIGINAL indie sci-fi epic on the scale of this production? New worlds, new characters, new ideas? I'm sure they would get a lot of support. With enough support they might find they can even make it into a series. Ah well.. dxtx

Creating a Star Wars story satifies a number of things. First they're Star Wars fans, and ironically can probably more easily forgive some weak writing in a Star Wars fan film than in a original production. Second, its a 40 minute film, and by embedding it in an existing story structure they aren't compelled to explain lots of things, like what a Jedi is, or what the Force is, or who the guys in the white armor are. Since all that can be taken as read they can do a shorter film that focuses on just the plot they want to tell. Such as it is. Finally, its going to be much cheaper to make even a 40 minute star wars film than a 40 minute original production. Why? Because its a lot easier to go out and rent a star wars prop costume, or find someone who has one, than it is to create a new design, build it and outfit 50 people with it.

However, I disagree in the bigger picture that spending this much time, money and creative energy on a Star Wars fanfilm is better than creating an original work. A mostly failed original work, in my opinion, has much more value than a mostly succesful derivative one. But that is just my opinion.

Ultimately, most artists crave nothing more than an audience. And it's far, far easier to get an audience for something based on a hugely popular work than on something original. And not just an audience; I think you're very, very wrong about getting "a lot of support" for an original story. There would be little, if any, support. I mean, ask a big Star Wars fan (of which there are millions) if they'd like to participate in something like this, and the answer is almost certainly "Of course, when do we start!", even if you point out how much work it will be. Ask someone to spend months of his free time on this really cool original story idea you have, and the answer is "Sorry, but I have better things to do".

Nowadays, success requires mainly marketing, with talent as an added bonus. And with a "fanfilm", most of the marketing has already been done and paid for by someone else.

The acting, yes, is not the best however is on par with most of anikin/amidala from Ep1/Ep2. I thought Liam Neeson in Ep1 really brought it out there and Ewan McGregor was great support for Neeson but in Ep2 there was.. nothing.

Anyways, the lightsaber scene between the two chicks was horribly choreographed, why would a jedi whip out a second light saber only to swing them both in unison? I thought the one male jedis fight was pretty good, but it seemed like the only one, and it was too short.

These jedi seemed to have a lot of emotions including love between jedi? Did these guys who wrote this thing ever watch any of the movies at all? The only sane guy out of the "good" crew was the one who wasn't a jedi. Being a jedi, wouldn't the two be able to sense the general alignment of the other? The whole trust fight at the beginning is odd. If my sister, who was a seer jedi, knew another jedi and trusted him, why would I, also being a jedi, not trust him, especially if I could just sense his feelings? It makes no sense. Plot = swiss cheese.

I just finished watching it. Some of the acting was indeed a bit wince-enducing, but I frankly found it more palatable than, say, Jake Lloyd in ep 1 or the romance scenes in ep 2. Space CGI was really nice, music was spot-on, and the lightsaber fights weren't great, but didn't suck either. The only complaint I'd really raise was that it was really dark in some scenes, but overall? Nice.

Since everybody else is talking about problems downloading it, let me be one of the first (I think) to write some kind of a review of the movie itself:

The special effects are more than impressive. The CG modeling is on a professional level. This is particularly obvious in the space battle -- dozens of finely detailed starships flying around in considerably more elaborate flight paths than I've seen in any fan film yet. The camera tracks and follows the ships in a nice theatrical manner rather than 1990s-style videogame CG. Earlier, there is also a very impressive fly-through of a large, futuristic city with nearly as much detail as was seen in the Fifth Element. A sequence seen later on of a spaceship flying towards and landing on a planet is on par with the non-character CGI of the Final Fantasy movie.

The most strikingly impressive special effects come in the form of blue screen. There seems to be extensive use of real-life sets (which are on par with most television productions), and the camera moves around quite freely (sometimes it's hand-held). The CG effects in the blue screen windows, as well as other little additions (holograms, neon signs on walls, etc) follow the camera movements extremely well. This in itself makes this superior to every other special effects-driven fan film I've ever seen.

The storyline, as with most fan films, is entirely irrelevant (unless you pay attention to storylines in videogames, of course). The whole point of the story here is to move the characters from one cool location to another (night club, ancient Jedi temple, etc), have them meet up and give them a reason to fight each other. The film heavily borrows elements from movies like "Unbreakable" and recycles plenty of scenes and dialogue from existing Star Wars films, as is common practice among most fan films. Other than that, it feels like a storyline from a Star Wars videogame, only shorter.

The acting is obviously not going to be that good, and the creaters once again continue the fine tradition of fan film casting by employing chubby, goatee-sporting geeks and goth girls to stand around and attempt to recite the cheesy lines given to them, though some try harder than most to sound convincing.

The lighting is also very nicely done, matching the CG and real-world sets quite well. On a greyish-yellow planet (all CG), for instance, the characters do not stick out like sore thumbs and generally blend in quite well with their surroundings.

Light saber battles are not the best. If you want to see how real light saber fights should be done in a fan film, watch "Art of the Saber", whose choerography and combatant skills match those in The Phantom Menace.

Overall, I'd say that this film is an extremely fine technical achievement. The production design has a very expensive look to it. The ending credits are downright HUGE. This is a fine achievement, and shows exactly what big budget fan films can accomplish. Copyright issues and the whole Star Wars labeling apart, this looks like something that could easily have come from a production company that works for the Sci-Fi Channel. It may not be as impressive compared to the real Star Wars, but it is definitely not any worse than, at the very least, cable television production.

I also highly recommend Ryan vs. Dorkman as well. Those two films were the top two finalists in a choreography contest held on the TheForce.Net Fan Film message boards. In fact, Ryan vs. Dorkman won by a small margin.

Interesting point as well, the two guys who starred in Art of the Saber had their movements recorded for use in Star Wars: Galaxies.

Okay, so, jedi have some excuse to be toned like Bruce Lee, because they do martial arts and jumping around all the time, or at least they have to practise to keep their hand in. But seems to me there's no particular reason why your average SW citizen has to look "hollywood". If anything, ordinaryness made the characters a tad more believable.

I agree on most points here, but let me express my opinion anyway:

Special Effects are very impressive at many levels. They certainly look professional. I especially enjoyed the space battle.

Acting is horrifying. It was very painful to watch the acting... so much so that it almost made me want to turn it off.

Plot could have worked if they didn't do stupid shit... like let the queen bitch go with the datafile when your light saber is 2 inches from her throat... moron. With that one bit of stupidity, she murdered countless jedi in hiding. Let's not even talk about how fucking inane these jedi are... they act like they had no training at all... a bunch of dorky inept morons. The horrifying acting just compounding all the problems with the plot.

So I give two thumbs up for the special effects... two thumbs down for the acting and two thumbs down for the plot nonsense...
So that's two thumbs down overall.

This could have been an incredible film overall, ruined by bad writing and bad acting... sounds like most hollywood movies to me...

The Lucas lightsaber scenes are flashier and cooler, but *nothing they do makes sense*. Pretty much no actual swordsmanship has ever been in a Star Wars film, I was certainly not expecting this one to start.

The Jedi emotion thing is inconsistent with the movies, but IIRC the books don't exactly have the Jedi being ascetic. That level of "all ur base r belong 2 us oh, btw, we left ur mom in slavery lol luv is 3V1L!!" seemed created to make Anakin's eventual fall more believable.

The trust fight was odd, and was probably placed there to create tension quickly- it's arbitrary, but how else are you going to get there with two Jedi knights, who would logically be like loyal siblings?

I wouldn't say it blew anything. The plot could certainly have been better, but I wouldn't say it was bad.

I was very impressed.

Judging From What I Saw...

First off, I only watched the first 15 or so minutes (it was late), so this is a point of view based on it's opening. However, what I saw will probably carry through for the entire thing, considering how basic the issues are. First, the special effects. This is a low-budget "home-brew" movie. I'm not going to demand an ILM quality production. It was fairly decent - on a par with many B movies that recieved far better funding (and full time work). Filming Techniques... these leave something to be desired. The camera shots don't look very well planned out, and are by no means dramatic. Not terrible (the camera's not in anyone's face), but between the lighting and the uninspiring shot angles, it's nothing to brag about. Many no-budget independant films with nothing else to show for, do better than this. Writing... ungh. While a lot of movies get by with poor writing by having high production values and a lot of glitz to distract you from the lines, when you're on a shoestring budget you can't hide a lack of a good script. Acting. This is my main gripe. It was bad. I've seen worse on direct-to-video, but I know non-actor friends who can do better than this. And people who say "watch the originals, are they better" are just looking for something to gripe about - there is no comparison. This is like watching someone's live-action rpg played out on a screen. The actors don't really seem to be into their roles, and are doing more posturing and pronouncing than conveying their characters. The glory of net-distributed films is that it allows people with no budget, no particular skill, and no training to put their heart and soul into a production that concentrates on attributes that have no price - imagination, intensity, and good writing. This didn't have any of these things. I'm sure this was a labor of love... and the sheer fact that they finished it is an accomplishment. The sheer fact that they got this many people interested is an even greater accomplishment. The end product, however, is not.

This is fabulous! The amount of people that got together to put something like this together is just amazing.

Forget about the amateurish acting, the X-files style lighting (not a feature in my mind), the fact that everything was obviously done in front of a green-screen, and the cinematography/camera settings made it look more like a soap opera than a motion picture shot on celluloid (use filters/plugins to achieve that).

This was awesome.. I watched it all the way through, and that includes the credits. I plan on sending the URL to several people I know in the indy film industry, once the interest dies down a little that is. :)

I don't get it. Doesn't someone own the trademark for Star Wars still? And don't they still defend it brutally? Also basing a work on another copyrighted work means you are dependent on their copyright. This sort of thing has given "fan fiction" trouble for a long time, I can't imagine the legal result would improve for a franchise like Star Wars ontop of that they are making fan-film not just written text, which only aids in attracting attention (enough to have gotten a slashdot post).

I had a look for this on IMDB; but it's not there. I can see both fan movies and maybe even some original works becoming common on the the internet, I know it's certainly something that would interest me. Perhaps it's time for IMDB to expand the classes of movies it lists.

Though I'm certainly not suggesting that all amateur movies should be listed, a short-movies like this are clearly of a high-quality. Of course the difficult decision is where to put the cut off point, and who decides what is good enough. But from a percursory skim through parts of this, it looks alot better than many commercial films IMDB currently lists.

The special effects were very good. Not as good as Lucasfilm, but considering it was a fanfilm I thought the ship and landscape scene were very impressive. The story was passable. Made some sense. However I thought the actors, at least the female ones, needed to be casted differently. They just really seemed out of place for the roles. I mean, maybe i'm biased a bit, but star wars females generally aren't super unattractive. All in all, I was very impressed with the quality of this film. And I hope they make more.

Lost in Translation

The movie has been produced on a not-for profit basis by a team of volunteers and is available for free download. Despite its humble origins, the production appears extraordinarily professional. The film is over 40 minutes long, complete with space battles and lightsaber fights -- need I say more?

The movie was a community college drama project (where it received a "C-"), and was shot entirely in the director's mom's basement. Complete with a "really bad fan fiction" quality script, this is a tour de force which demands to be missed!

mplayer plays both versions fine for me. Quicktime version is Sorenson Video 3 (decoder ffsvq3) with MPEG audio (decoder mp3lib). Windows Media version is Windows Media Video 9 (decoder dmo) with DivX audio v2 (decoder ffwmav2). The Windows Media version looks a lot better than the QuickTime version, so I'd forget about the QuickTime version.

Suffice it to say, the lameness filter has the brains of a small perl script. I'd give details, but on consideration, I'm not sure I want to hand this trick out to kiddie-grade trolls. The lameness filter did protest a little; it took about five previews to make sure the first torrent.UUE came out acceptable, intelligible(?), and (almost) right before posting, but by the time I did the second I could make it work on the first try. It isn't particularly hard if you try... but no doubt CmdrTaco will very shortly make it his Holy Mission Of The Week to do something about that. =)

I had the oppertunity to go to the premiere in Baltimore, MD on Saturday night. While I was there, I got to meet several of the actors in the flick as well as the producer. They also had Darth Vader and the 501st Div and R2-D2.

I wasn't sure what to expect, but there were more people there in black-tie than in costume. The whole event was well done and a great time. Thanks PanicStruck.

long time ago in a computer far, far away I did made a star wars intro using flash...All I can say is that the intro of revelations is a crap and I can do much better than them..I really dunno why they use a background music that contain so much less energy than the original series and the fading of the world "starwars" is damn too slow. The mucis at the time when the text follows is so weak that the whole atmosphere is just not right. But I appreciate their hardworking and enthusiasm. Thanks for the amazement, Panic Struck Productions, despite the pretty much room for improvement.

It only displays a small fraction of seeders/leechers, those that the tracker has told it about.

To see the total S/L ratio, you need to go to the master tracker's status page, if available. For example, I routinely see only 4-5 seeders in the client when there are 50+ listed on the tracker page, and similarly only 10% or so of the total leechers are displayed by my client.

Sorry to be cranky, but there are an awful lot of people out there who DON'T get that it's a fan film that can't make money, but can exist without legal ramifications. Lucasfilms practically (if not actually) owns TFN, so what more do people want (aside from an engraved invitation from Lucas himself??!!

At least they could possibly recoup their investment by selling DVDs at the local Bi-Mon-Sci-Fi-Con. A neat feature would be to have a playback option on the DVD to only show the special effects sequences, since those are really what make the movie worth watching.

there WILL be a DVD..actually there will be two! one for the film with commentary tracks and the second with a real neat behind the scenes type deal discussing costumes, fX, etc.

both will be made available as images (iso) so you can burn it with all the snazzy interface buttons and what not...some easter eggs in there as well :-)

The special effects are great, especially for non-paid amateurs, but the acting is horrid. It reminds me of the local renaissance festival where people dress up like its the medieval times and REALLY GET INTO CHARACTER. Only they do a bad job of it.

Kudos for the production, but I'd say Lucas is safe, even with Jar Jar.

After watching the film I have to say that the acting was average at best and mostly very poor (but what do you expect from a low-budget fan film?). The special effects were quite good though, with some of the effects being about Phantom Menace quality, though one or two seens looked to me like a cross between the graphics from Rogue Squadron on N64 and Rogue Squadron 2 on GameCube. Overall though I'd say that for a fan film it's good and if you're into special effects and Star Wars then it's worth the download, as long as you're on broadband that is (obviously...).
