A possible software exploit that could possibly be exploited on a linux system (or windows ..)gets discoverd and it gets major air time and citizens running screaming in the streets...

If someone finds a virus/worm/trojan on the windows platform that has definantly comprimised thousands of systems and all you get is a little alert to say please update your virus definitions

This Should say more about linuxs reputation and record for security for security than anything. This will already be patched i imagine (must check that and apt-get an update) and there are no known exploit sofar as linux virii being around the corner . they are already here but if we keep our systems up to date (most linux distros aimed at non power user will have an auto update feature (most aimed at power users do now too)) and the kernel carrys on getting updated and patched and secured we have nothing to worry about.

The people who do have to worry are the makers of distros for new non tech users who do not have the best record for out of the box security

apt-get repositorys may have some scalability issues , though it's the best package managment i have ever used and its a true plesure to have this type of usability at hand .
Debian package managment is extremly solid (Respect also to gentoo based distros and the BSD world , i just prefer debian and apt) and windows can'nt hold a candle to it.
its a matter of a few words typed into the term for me to upgrade my system or install new software , and if you dont know what you want exactly then you have the excelent synaptic to browse the repositorys from the comfert of a GUI with a nice search function.
Microsoft may have some nicely engenieerd products that are a plesure to use (? examples please.. as I honestly couldnt call any of the ones i have used a plesure ) though compared to the ease of use and power i have with a debian base for my GNU software i really am not convinced about MSs superior useability .
I use debian styled linux(ubuntu) and BSD on x86.. and linux and BSD(net and OS X) on ppc . I do occasionaly need to use computers with varying windows versions for work and it honestly does not hold a candle to OS X or debian to me on a desktop useability front , Fair enough some people prefer windows but honestly i cant see why (other than games)

two reasons this does not occur as far as i see it .

1:) people are lazy and expect things just to work or do not have the time and can't see the long term benifits of this

2:) support is big bussiness , for many people in the IT industry .Training people how to properly use a PC means a potential loss of profits/jobs.

So untill we find some middle ground we are stuck with all the problems that under-trained computer users cause .

The problem as i see it with DVD based all in one distros is quite simple .
If I am going to want to install a large ammount of software with my distro then i would rather get it from package repository..

With a DVD ISO based distro you first have an hour or two(or more)downloading a DVD ISO and burning it , instaling it and all the software you want from the CD .. then being a person with the bandwidth to easily download a DVD ISO i spend the next 3 hours downloading updated packages to replace the ones I installed from the DVD ISO in the first place.

Now a DVD iso is great if your passing it on to someone without the bandwith who wants a large install but otherwise after the first week or two that the Distro has been avaliable in its current form the disk is totaly out of date and requires you download the mountain of updates

a small 1 cd or net install CD is alot more usefull for people with large bandwidth (and possibly no DVD burner at hand)
