...how relevant is Windows really? The big news, of course, is Linux. The last time I tried Windows (version 3.1), I was seriously disappointed, and it had all those annoying icons at the bottom. Why would anyone use this when they can get free OSes that are as good as, or better, without the Program Manager? Plus, any features that Windows would have that might distinguish it (window switching, I believe) very few people use.
Based on my experience, IBM is well on their way to becoming the new Anderson.
What are you saying here? Are you implying that the 70.000-something employees of the Andersen (sp!) worldwide practise not involved with Enron, WorldComm, and Waste Management were morons with no moral standard?
Oh, please. All baskets can have a few bad eggs, Andersen's problem was that many of the bad eggs were gathered at a few clients.
I get spam now that have about 2-3 paragraphs of text that are mostly plagurized poetry, then all of the words that trigger spam filters are in the graphics included in the HTML email.
Yeah, where are those copyright zealots when we actually could use them? Have the rights users sue them for using works of art in mischievous activities.
To be honest, very limited when you compare it to other techniques. I would say shoutcasting, podcasting and plain-old-putting-mp3s-for-download-on-your-websit e would be more suited for this.
OTOH, I'm getting old. I guess only old people in Korea use podcasting nowadays.
IANAL, but who's saying they can just pull out? There are a vast amount of European companies having support agreements with MS. MS cannot decide to cease all operations in Europe and walk away from these contracts without facing the legal repercussions.
However, MS might be able to honour these contracts from overseas, but I'm not sure of what the legal consequences would be (like I said, IANAL)
Why don't they get that diversity is a *Good* thing? Switch it up every few years, to keep these guys on their toes and not let them get too comfortable/corrupt.
If the switch is considered arbitrary, then that will kill off the incentive to improve. Why stay on your toes if the the election is not based on merit?
You are free to complain about anything you want, but would you pay a higher price for the quality. Prices increase exponentially with quality. If it bothers you, vote with your wallet.
Partly agreed. Quality does and should cost, but it's not as though manufacturing costs are the primary drivers of price in the technology marketplace, anyway. And prices weren't my point, quality was.
Maybe Sony's just conveying a general sentiment among manufacturers. There's still no reason I (or you) as consumer(s) shouldn't crave high quality products.
In my book, the fan films climaxed with Star Wars Troops.
In addition to the interesting look into a storm trooper's life, it also provided another (more realistic) view into Luke's dark background.
Norway has actually a very good project in this regard Skolelinux. The project aims at making a bespoke Linux distro for Norwegian schools, including supporting both "flavours" of the Norwegian language (something MS have been reluctant to do). Statskonsult, the state-owned company dealing with public management development, has actually called SkoleLinux "the only ICT solution taking the schools'resources and plans seriously".
IANBS (I am not Bruce Schneier), but the problem might be mitigated, although not solved, by using two-factor, two-channel authentication.
Think getting some message via SMS, logging in through your computer and replying to the SMS with some information.
Or we can hope quantum computing helps us solve this.
why I just received this email:

You can't visit a tech site (even slashdot) without seeing ads that are saying that Windows is cheaper than Linux (unless you block ads*)
How come Linux gets cheaper if I start blocking ads?
*duck*
So, that one goes to 11, too?

First the RoboShark and now this. I thought the last Aibo was cool, but there's just no stopping those guys at Sony, is there ;-)

IANALE (I Am Not A Linux Expert), but how on earth could you possibly need an enterprise system if you cannot afford $345 a year?

They're free to accept anything they want, but it doesn't imply that we as consumers should.

That's ok. but does it run Lin... - oh wait
So, we're supposed to get angry at all anti-piracy groups now because this one planted evidence?
/. We're not "supposed to get angry at anti-piracy groups". We already are angry. All of us.
