  1. Re:technology on Spielberg to Direct Wallace and Gromit? · · Score: 1

yeah I was thinking along the lines of how they added dinosaurs in Jurassic Park, the addition of effect in Star Wars Trilogy, the computer animation additions in Prince of Egypt, etc...

Sorta like, it'll "look" like claymation but would they use computers to fill in some "spots"?

Anyways, I have faith it'll look great. Claymations rocks. Heck I even like Gumby.

  2. technology on Spielberg to Direct Wallace and Gromit? · · Score: 4

It'll be good to see another Gromit flick. The evil penguin one ranks as one of my favorite movies of all time.

Having said that, I remember watching a quasi-documentry on how Nick Park creates his movies. And it was a PAINSTAKING process if I remember correctly, which basically involved making every single adjustments and snapping a pic of it. It must've take lots and lots of time to create one of these claymations. So I'm wondering if they are going to continue that tradition of claymation or maybe they'll switch to computers all together? (hey they did something like that with TPM). It'd be interesting to see exactly how they'll go about doing it technology wise. Anyway, this is one movie that I'm looking forward to.

  3. animetic nonchalance on Movie Review: Princess Mononoke · · Score: 1

I am not an anime fan (saw a few ones like Ghost in the Shell, it was ok, but not enough to turn my head) and I suppose that will qualify me to be burned. :P

But personal opinions aside, it sounds like a good movie. I *do* sometimes enjoy reviews that don't pertain to the latest processor or OS, and it seems to me like this is more interesting than the M$ got hacked article. I got into some books just because I saw it on slashdot (The Diamond Age comes to mind) and I appreciate that fact. It would suck if slashdot turned all pseudo-techy ( zd.. net..) but once in awhile reviews are ok. I think this is the first time I saw an anime review here anyways. Reviews aren't necessarily a Bad Thing(TM) IMO.

Yes yes! I think you've hit the mark. Last time it was the "How to keep nerds away" article and now this? I know relationship/love life is a huge part of people's lives but...it's something you *have* to learn on your own (not try to follow a HOW-TO on LOVE...unfortunately, this package doesn't come with a README)

I didn't like the article for the reason that I don't like articles that generalize (especially on "geeks" of any sex).

    The Reality might surprise you.

  6. Parental Duties on ZD "Objective Reporting" Not Just For Linux · · Score: 1

It's not that the parents need to monitor *every* single thing the child is doing (Gawd, that'd be horrible! I *hated* being watched over the shoulder)

My brother (who, funnily, is 17 and went through his share of violent games and turned out fairly normal other than having too much passion for C++..) shares the same view as I do. We hate parental monitoring not because we hate our parents, but because the idea is stifling.

I think the parental duty needs to reach deeper. They need to firsthand establish a value system in their kids where the kids will "learn" and "think" for themselves and come to the conclusion that "hey this is not a good idea". With that rooted, I think the parents will have much better time dealing with the kids. My parents don't know all the games we played, but we, in turn, never got into the gore-fest and porn-littered games. It just never appealed to us. They already know that we play "violent" games but that we take take full responsibility for our actions. Establishing that kind of value is more important than freaking out over one kid buying a M rated game.

Sorry for this severely off-topic post. I couldn't resist.

I think I might subscribe at least to be able to meet other girls who use linux (IRL, there's one girl I know who use it, me and it can get pretty depressing) but of course, I do like on topic mailing lists.

The first time I learned the word "mailing list" I must've subscribed to at least a dozen. I'm sure my isp hated me :P But now I have one (the slackware mailing list which is very very good IMO) It's just too hard to sort through all the noise sometimes...

  8. Fear making bad decisions on Sony claims of Artist's Name URL For Life · · Score: 1

oh yes. We own the url (who the heck is interNIC, screw them) and so no more mp3. I love how corporate minds work :P

But besides the point, the article doesn't mention that Sony would also provide a webpage for these artists. A webpage can be a really good place for potential fan to see who they are and even hear clips/lyrics of the songs, send fan email, etc. So, if the contract expires and Sony doesn't want to provide a site (because they own it for life), the artist can't by him/herself? The article didn't seem clear on that. Do they own the website or just the url (and any url related to the name of the band).

It sounds full of loophole-ish. Doesn't make sense. I suppose musicians better get some damn good lawyers now :P

  9. Morbid cam on Geek CAM watching Hurricane Floyd in South Florida · · Score: 1

I read about the hurricane on a newsite and how they're evacuating the area. It sounds terrible down there and personally, although I'm appreciative that the technology today can show us a storm truly "on live", it's still fairly morbid considering all those people who had to move out. Besides, it's even endangering Cape Caneveral. Now that really sucks.

I don't live anywhere near Florida but I'm actually looking more forward for this storm to pass on or at least move on as quickly as possible.

    early mornings suck.

  10. Skeptical on Why geek geniuses may lack social graces · · Score: 1

Read the article. It was interesting, but that was about it for me. I didn't take it seriously enough to let it effect my life (particularly since I don't believe psychology to be a "real" science...yet anyway). Sure I was an introverted kid. Sure I didn't like playing dodgeball with the other kids and instead played with my calculator in my own corner. And yes, I've been called a nerd. But that hasn't stopped me from getting friends, getting along with my family, getting into college, getting a computer, a job...
never been called "socially inept" yet, although they don't call me "normal" either. It's better that way anyway; to have your own unique personality.

I always detested labels anyway. This is just another one. If they call me "mildly autistic" or a "space-cadet" (my old nickname) that's fine because it doesn't mean a squat to. People will always try to label you in some way because they can't understand geeks. The best way is to be cynical of their opinions and find out who you are for yourself (blah, that was cheesy, but I sincerely believe in it).

  11. software whore on Playstation 2 delayed again · · Score: 1

I'm truly excited that Dreamcast came out today. Hurrah for you Sega fans :)

The thing is, it doesn't really matter what console system I get anymore as long as certain game developers are developing for it. I used to have hardware loyalties in the eighties (Nintendo or bust!) but ever since I switched over to PSX, that's when I realized I could really care less about hardware after all.

If Sega wants me to get a DC, it's easy. Just get Capcom, EA, Konami, etc..etc..all them awesome game comanies to develop for their system. The same goes with PSX2. The reason I switched to Sony in the beginning was their developers anyways (I still don't know what chip's running my PS. Like 33mhz or something) As soon as they announce their game developers, I'll decide then. Besides, it turns out that game developers usually want to go with the system that is more powerful to create better games on (usually).

  12. That was great on Obi-Wan speaks out against franchise · · Score: 1

Ok, I've never seen this article before and the whole time I thought it belonged to the person who posted it. Not that it matters. I don't even know who David Brin is.

But I will definitely check out his books.

That was an incredible commentary! Something that I believe every Star Wars fan should read. It's a type of writing that will get them at least to "think" about the stuff that's being consciously/unconsciously fed into the mind.

I'm a Star Wars/Star Trek/Sci-Fi fan but I've always been hesistant to place Star Wars/Star Trek as a "true" sci-fi, meaning I'd prefer to keep it more as an eye-candy/pop-brainless fliks. Some of the scifi I've enjoyed most were stuff by Asimov and 1984. Now, though, this dude's opened up a new persepective. It's time we ask ourselves, just what are we watching and for what reason and question the motives behind the existence of them.

And I will watch the other movies by Sir Alec so I won't be referring him as "that guy who played Obi-Wan" :)

    Peace

  13. RPS and hype on Warcraft 3 Announced · · Score: 1

I don't know about many of the people here, but I for one waited days for that "The World will Change" thing to change on 9-5-99. I guess I can be called as one of the devoted memers of the clan of Blizzard... :)

That said, I am completely looking forward to Warcraft 3. And no, I don't think this game is going to be in direct competition with the regular RTSs out there since they seemed to be focused in callined it "Role Playing Strategy" and gave pitifully little information about it. But the release date is still over a year way and I can see Blizzard announcing this in order to hype this thing up crazy the next year+.

Remember Starcraft. That game was massively hyped and delayed. In the end, it was an amazing product. But nonetheless, some people felt cheated and although it was a great game, like all games, it didn't live up to the hype it generated.

My advice: Blizzard's pulled this one before. They'll come up with a super duper game that I'm going to drool and spend many sleepless nights over. But it'll never live up to the hype it's gonna create so just sit back and forget about it for a year until it eventually ships on that fateful early 2001 (Ha! I doubt they'll release in 2000, but we'll see).

And the port to linux would make me such a happy person. Please let it be true. Please!

    (flame retardant on)
There is no such thing as complete "freedom of speech". Something is going to always offend someone or another. That's the flaw in the system. That's why things considered "obscene" are illegal in the US. But trolls are definitely obscene.

I say go with full moderation. Read it and delete it if it's inappropriate. I think the moderators are smart enough (I hope) to distinguish between logical, thought out posts, and trolls. Well, I'd give them the benefit of the doubt. I don't consider it censorship. I consider it filtration to give us the good stuff while letting the bad stuff sink.

All good message boards I've been to are moderated in this manner. They are all read before it's posted. It's a little slower but the board has a tendency to be more intelligent and clean compared to the non-moderated boards. (In fact I avoid unmoderated boards like a plague) CmdrTaco, if you're reading this, understand that this is YOUR board, and I don't believe anyone should have the right to DOS it to ruin it for you and the other people who come here to input/gain informations and insights.

  15. McGyver ruled!!!! on Pure Science Becoming Less Popular Than CS · · Score: 1

I remember watching McGyver as a kid! Thinking back, the stuff he did was so improbable but it was soo cool how he fixed stuff just by knowing the chemical contents (now _how_ did he know chocolate would DO that??)

But I digress and you are totally on the spot. I loved chemistry the moment I was forced to figure out electron orbitals. It's true professors weed students out. I am experiencing it. My first year chemistry class had a packed lecture room, one of the largest in the school. Now in my third year chemistry there are around 20 students!

I guess professors don't purposely flunk kids out maliciously, but it's a sad fact that it just happens because many people lose interest.

People totally do not understand science at all. It is NOT boring. In fact, I found programming to be boring. As much as CS majors get excited about the newest algorithms discovered, true scientists enjoy solving problems and discovering answers or even new conundrums. TRUE CS majors get insanely obsessed over their theories and scientists love doing what they do and despite our poor rep and poor pay, we are what we are because science is da bomb.

I say, despite the hype, do what you want to do!
Because if you don't, you'll most likely end up miserable. Which is one reason why I dislike articles like this because it seems like society is telling kids to turn one way or another.
