Definitely agree. I used Linux for 4 years (mainly slackware, switched to debian) and it served my purposes well..after much learning and tinkering that is. I'm pretty good w/ it now but then again, I no longer has the time like a student to tinker.

W/ that aspect, OSX is perfect. If I want to get into the deeper part of the system, I'll enable root and mess w/ the console. Otherwise, the GUI is just flawless and I can worry more about getting my work done. Someone mentioned it's not really fair to compare "linux" w/ "OSX" and he's right. I'd compare this to just X+some manager. In my case my favorite was WindowManager - it was fast, had docks, and generally easy and pretty to use. And so is Aqua. Then again, XDarwin allows me to run some X programs (WM too) on top of Aqua. Best of both worlds really.

The only thing I really miss is the virtual desktops. I used to keep 3 or so around because it kept me organized, esp. on a smaller laptop screen. (I've mostly used laptops). But I have to say, OSX is pretty, stable, and configurable. As you said, "It Works." Count me in as one of the "converts"

As long as people think of linux as a "hobbists'" OS, Linux game ports will fail. Why do linux users, simply because it mostly runs open source programs, demand proprietory ones to be given away as well?

If I owned a Windows version of CivIII, that does not in any way give me the right to call Sid Meier and demand to have the MacOS version for free because I *own* the game already. No one has a problem with this, why is it that when it comes to Linux, everything must be "free" or nil? This mentality is really disturbing. People must realize that Linux is a powerful OS of its own, capable of being productive, and a LEGITIMATE OS of its own, not something that sits on a partition on the side next to Winodws which you can run back to if you "really" want to have work done. If the only OS you had was Linux, and you wanted to play games, you would pay for games.

Now I see this won't be possible at all with the new cds. In a sense, a lot of people are stuck with DEAD technology as far as ripping portable music is concerned. So what is to become of those countless devices that deal with mp3's? Shouldn't they at least fight for legimacy of the fair use of CDs bought by the consumer? And I'll be damned if I buy those clunky "portable" cd-players just so I could play my music. Wow how stupid.

  10. Re:WHat do you think on Info on the LOTR:FOTR DVD · · Score: 1

I recently re-read FoTR and I have to agree. They seriously make A LOT of mistakes from the moment they step out of the Shire. It's not because they're inherent idiots, but because they simply are not aware of the dangers in the world. (Even they themselves admit this a lot). Every danger they face, someone had to get them out, whether it was Tom, Aragorn, Glorfindel, Gandalf, etc.

The books are compelling precisely because, these people who have never needed to face evil, are forced to, basically save everyone. That's why you feel for them when they get tortured by orcs, stabbed by enemies, and suffer, A LOT (esp. in Two Towers).

FoTR the movie did a good job of portraying the soft side of the hobbits because they certainly change a lot by the time they reach the end of the trilogy.

I forgot to return it to the library (gulp...they don't check paperbacks so they still don't know...yes I feel bad about it)and when I read it again in college, it just blew me away. It's such an amazing work because she doesn't really cram down her personal ideologies as much as she encourages the readers to ask "what if" as well.

VCR recording sucks in terms of quality. If it was digital maybe they would have a case. I record on VCR only because it is not possible to view the program otherwise (time conflict, watching another show, etc). The visual quality, frankly, sucks. The program might show up clearly on your tv but the quality will degrade when moving to the tapes. Everyone who's recorded a tape of a cd music knows this.

Hey MPAA, there is a large difference between digital and analog. Why do you think people buy DVD players in the first place? Get a damn clue already!

Didn't someone against napster say the issue is difference because the quality is still retained in the mp3 format as opposed to the bootleg tapes of before? Do I sense schitzo-paranoid industry in the air?

I don't care if many or few people disagree with my politics (esp. here) But everyone should have the right to protest peacefully. What this article does is trivialize the injustice that often occurs and are not shown in the media (what? the media doesn't tell the whole truth?? unbelievable)

This guy was asking for it. Many protestors simply want the chance to express their views peacefully without the fear of being arrested. Don't dismiss all claims as now "oh they were asking for it etc." because not ALL are and it pisses me off that this pitiful article will give impressions of real protestors with real issues as lamers looking around for trouble.

Perhaps it was because of the self-posting nature of kuro5hin. whatever the reason, it was nice that there wasn't one but TWO main news sites for me. That's also the point of open source movement isn't it? to have choices and the ability to choose what you want, not only with programs but also web sites as well.

It was really depressing to find a black page notice instead of the regular familiar site. I do hope kuro5hin will be able to get back on its feet again. Cheers

I don't visit those sites mentioned in the article either since I don't have that much time and getting my daily dose of slashdot and world news, email are sometimes all I can afford. If I have time, e-shopping for music or books or whatever I need ATM.

It's great that there are more sites catering to the female populations, but just don't lump all girls together as "chickclickers."

    Whatever.

Take a good look at the magazines. And to those people who say it's because of the target audience, I ask, the last time I checked, EGM stood for electronic gaming monthly (not electronic gaming for men) or gamefan (not gameman) or pcgamer...hmm..are these gender specific?

Justify it all you want. The fact is girls are getting more into computers AND are becoming more technologically savvy. And they like games. Hopefully in the near future we won't be reading such articles because games will be just games, not just a thing for community of typically teenage boys.

And so what if someone likes Myst over Quake. Some people enjoy Deer Hunter. Enough said.

Half of the world's population are women and almost all industries are now trying to be inclusive of them, except maybe the gaming industry. This is just a really dumb move. The gaming industry should seriously wake up.

I'm more biased toward less bloody games, philosophy being, if the game needs so much gore to be interesting, it probably sucks.

Many here seem to think girl gamers are anamolies. Yeah, we just don't like to be amused by what technology can offer as much as the next guy.

It's not only the magazines by the way. I was driving on a rather large freeway the other day and saw a billboard of Lara Croft. And don't think it's just the gaming magazine. Take a look at the the PC magazines ads as well. For the last few weeks or so, slashdot, it seems to me, has been obsessing over how geeks/nerds/the social pariahs, etc, can get into good relationships? But..seriously, what is the median age in this forum? Last I remember from the polls, most people were in their 20's! Maybe I am a hopeless optimist (who is also in that 20's without that special somone) but the only thing people should remember is that you can't just go *searching* for it. Believe it or not, there is a looong life ahead for most of us, and you should start looking at life, enjoying the singleness/freedom as much as you can because there will come a time when it won't be there! Start enjoying life, be happy, and trust me, people will like you more (and maybe you'll get dates once in awhile too).

I have friends who are in deep relationships and some who are married. They are happy in their own ways, but it isn't something to be too envied. This might be sweet lemon, but I can't feel too bitter about my situation.

If it happens, it happens. If it doesn't, it doesn't. Stop stressing out and relax. If you meet someone online, great! If you don't, great! I am too skeptical to rely on just *one* method and online meeting is just one way. It doesn't hurt for you to go out and associate with *real* (versus virtual) people once in awhile.

And to have damaging, wrong, or malicious information is definitely not ok to leave it on their boards. It's like "alright, I allowed you to use my paint, but you ended up graffiting the city hall. Sorry, no more for you"

I think people need to realize that as much as internet is for free-speech, etc, much of it is owned by private servers/computers/lines. They have, and should have, right to them.
