I get so many coworkers asking me about iPods at work for their children it's insane. Children, Teens, and young adults will be the driving force of this product industry. Right now, the iPod is cool, and no amount of MS money will take that away. As long as their friends have one, its tough sh!t MS. :P

Most developing countries that have come under international criticism for environmental pollution have been quick to point out the head-start that the now Industrialized nations had. The United States industrial revolution polluted the surrounding environment on a massive scale, especially the Great Lakes / Eerie / Hudson River areas. Pittsburgh steel mills especially come to mind during the Carnegie years also. Countries that are just now trying to develop their infrastructure are finding it cost-prohibitive since pollution is way cheaper. An unfair advantage for the West, but polluting the environment will not make things better. =(

An interesting article in the Economist pointed out the trend of major college campuses like Harvard going completely green. While you may say that one college is insignificant, the energy and resources that large institutions such as Harvard consume are equivalent to small independent nations.

    1. Core Duo will be faster than anything AMD has released currently. That is primarily because it is manufactured with 65nm process unlike all of AMD processors which are made with the 90nm process.

    2. The push to the socket AM2 architecture was to enable DDR2 support for AMD chips. Socket 939 could not support the faster memory that is hitting the market now, such as the DDR2 800Mhz (cheaper) or the brutal DDR2 1066Mhz (save your pennies).

AMD has stated that the AM2 platform motherboards will be able to support their next generation of chips. So if you are like me and made the plunge, your mobo won't be obsolete for a good long time.

I find your comment ignorant and short-sighted, neonprimetime. The correctional system is not a one-way street, and longer sentences surely do not curb crime rates. Social challenges dictate crime, like poverty, hunger, environment. To punish all with an iron fist conjures an image of the United States in a constant state of martial law. Also, this kind of thinking has already put an unfathomable strain on the United States correctional system. If you don't believe me, do a google search on the problems facing California's prison system.

Criminals should be punished, but like j-turkey said, it should be based on the situation. Don't judge the entire legal system a failure based on one or two news reports you read or heard of in which a felon served a short sentence. Our society needs boundaries, but more importantly we need freedom.

  10. Enable Community Development on MS Employees Debate Mod Chips · · Score: 1

Microsoft wants a community to be developed around the Xbox, with hobbyists or fans making stand-alone games, utilities, and content for pre-existing games much like they do on the PC. Sort of like add-on modules for RPG games like Oblivion or (gasp) Grand Theft Auto.

What Microsoft wants to avoid is losing control of their monopoly of hardware. It is a slippery slope: Give users the ability to make homebrew games and content risks leaking the secrets of the console booting process.

The real question is this: Does the risk of losing business from pirated copies of games outweigh the benefits of a more robust user community? Microsoft will still stand to gain from public ignorance or fear of mod-chipping, and most people who rent games and burn them at home are the vast minority of users.

IMHO, their business model is semi-flawed to begin with. No matter your console preference, Microsoft trails Sony in an extremely competitive and brand-loyal market. More and more titles are being made cross platform. Sony's PS2 network abilities are free compared to Xbox live, although Live is still a better product. Microsoft's profits from the Xbox division remain dismal, but within the company it is still seen as the most innovative.

  11. Re:So ... what does it do and how's it do it? on Nvidia Unveils New 64x SLI GPU Rig · · Score: 1

The cards move the computational graphics work from the CPU to a dedicated graphics processor on the GPU itself. The cards themselves have multiple processors on them to supplement the CPU's ability to speed through mathmatical calculations involving graphics, which is why they are so darned good for rendering.

Keep in mind, movies like Shrek, Cars, Ice Age, all take anywhere between 12-18 months just to render. The big studies (Pixar / Dreamworks, etc) rent server farms to get the work done faster.

  12. NOT FOR GAMING on Nvidia Unveils New 64x SLI GPU Rig · · Score: 5, Insightful

The nVidia Quadro graphics cards are for rendering, not for high-end gaming. The idea in the graphics card market that "more $$$$ == better graphics in games" does not hold true. These Quadro's will perform rather poorly compared to a 7950GTX, currently the top dog in the nVidia consumer graphics card market.

This computer is for the design/development professional, who needs to render large amounts of video, like digital animation (think Pixar and it's ilk).
