Only distance vector routing protocols are reduced to link going down. Link state protocols can factor a huge variety of metrics in. Link speed, bit error, arbitrary numbers (policy), or (drum roll...) congestion. Link state routing protocols aren't exactly new or uncommon these days either.
I use OSX and VMWare Fusion or Linux and VMWare. I played with other things in the long ago and they didn't work well at all, but what I have seen since then looks interesting, it just isn't a high enough use application for me to bother with switching. Other than that, why do you need all of that other nonsense? The vast majority of people that would be switching aren't people that need either of those things. Maybe some gamers crying about needing video accel, but they would be just as screwed since none of their games work in Windows 7. The vast majority of critical applications aren't games and don't need Accel.
Besides, with all the new games requiring Vista and that DX10 garbage they seem to be telling people they should use a console instead anyways. Then, with the HD-DVD thing dying, they seem to be telling people they should not be using an XBox. So Windows 7 will provide such a tremendous hiccup in the gaming world and consoles having become so advanced I suspect it could very well be a death blow to computer gaming for a long while. This is of course assuming that they go down the typical Microsoft forced upgrade path. Which I have no reason to believe they wouldn't royally fuck the shit out of their customers to attempt this.
Microsoft really just can't get it through their head that now they have to compete or they will get eaten alive. They are no longer the only major player and they are quickly losing the ability to tell the consumer what they want. I was a little surprised that they backed off the XP thing because of the ultraportable computer thing and knowing that if they push Vista they will get their asses handed to them in that market by Linux.
This is indeed awesome. Now there will be precious little reason not to switch to a better OS. "I can't run XYZ" well guess what, you can't in Windows now either, your only option is virtualization and Linux tends to be a better host for that anyways, and even the virtualization platforms are free.
While I know it is extremely popular to hold that line of thinking, it is unbelievably offensive and incorrect. I'm not going to claim that your run of the mill infantry guy is a genius by any stretch, but a very large number of extremely intelligent people sign up. All of the branches encourage continuing education as part of their determination for going up through the ranks as well. To survive in the military you have to be able to adapt and learn quickly. The technical training that many careers recieve rival what a 2yr school offers, and they have to compress it into 6-10 months of training. If you can't keep up you are removed from the program. The idea that everyone who signs up is inherently stupid is stunningly ignorant. Hell, you have to have a college degree to become an officer (not that always proves that you are smart, I know plenty of dumbasses with degrees).
The military also tends to do a much better job of removing ineffective and corrupt senior leaders from the picture. Care to explain to me why the "more intelligent" civilian populace can't seem to get rid of their ineffective and corrupt leaders? In fact that keep voting them back in! I think it is a special kind of irony that the the man at the top of the military chain, known for his...stunning level of intelligence...is in fact a civilian. Additionally the military records even show that he was a screwup and they tried to remove him. The civilians put him back in charge...at the very top.
Tons of damage, they have managed to blow up a generator using SCADA controls in one test. Because in this wondeful new world of Interconnected Expanding Horizons Where Do You Want To Go Today Whatever crap every critical control computer has been plugged into a network for some dumb reason. Varying from "I don't want to have to work next to the loud device that the computer controls" to "The PHB said we need to be more "integrated"".
There are all manner of systems that handle hazardous materials that are computer controlled. To top it off, most of those control systems are VERY specialized software, and many are just Win32 progams that you can't simply fiddle with patching the OS without risking breaking something very important.
Oh, and as dumb as that WWN article is, in the long long ago I remeber reading about a virus that could cause physical damage to the hard drive. It had to do with how hard drives were controlled at the time. I don't remember all of the details, but the jist was that it could cause the drive to spin down while the heads were over the platter. This removed the air cushion the heads ride on and cause a head crash. Also, while not a virus, I also remember older hard drives could cause MASS damage when spinning at full RPM and the motor seizing. Back then the platters had some weight to them and a sudden stop could cause them to break in a pretty spectacular manner.
No problem, we will be sending you the bill shortly. The taxes on this work will be calculated at $1.8m per second. We look forward to receiving your payment in a timely manner. -- IRS
You mean everyday things like Apple and Windows shouldn't be trademarked? Additionally, trademarks don't extend outside of the industry, so AHA could only sue others in the medical industry.
So who do you work for? Clearly you are manipulating the system to get modded up with such an anti-anti-American post.
This goes both ways though, Americans tend to point the finger and scream alot as well. When competing religions is such the core of thinking the "everyone is guilty" argument doesn't go very far (militant atheists that viciously attack anyone with religious beliefs are no different than the religions they hate, beleiving in no God is equally absurd as beliving in God until evidence exists one way or the other, and due to the very nature of the definition of God no evidence for or against could ever exist). Without fail, one side is not guilty because they got the hall pass from their God (or lack there of) to be worthless assholes about it all.
I am convinced people like that guy are actually right wingers. Michael Moore and so on. I mean really when the right wing arguments are so weak and ignorant to begin with the only thing you can do is make the other side look even dumber. Gather up a bunch of "lefties" and parade them around speaking gibberish or making asses of themselves and suddenly your arugments look better by comparison.
You gotta give them a little credit though, it has got to be tough to find someone that makes Bush look like an intelligent speaker.
As wonderful as it is that the power is returning to the people, that you no longer have to be a media titan to get the news out, I wonder if it really is going to help us any.
Big Media - hardly anyone pays attention because so much is filtered to only provide what isn't really important or that will help keep us fat dumb and happy.
Internet Media - hardly anyone pays attention because so much is produced by people who are fat dumb and happy and it becomes virtually impossible to sort out the crap.
The internet has given everyone a voice, unfortunately we have no real way to stop the most vocal idiots from using it or to sort out their crap. Before ANYONE even attempts to debunk this as stupid things are easy to squash...let me remind you of such popular ideas as Creationism, the 6000yr old earth, and the frighteningly stupid idea that the sun moves around the earth. All of those have reasonably large followings and continue to spread.
Actually its people like you that make things worse for everyone, because it is arrogant elitists like you that help to make it so popular to be stupid, or at the very least appear stupid. People like you are so adept at perpetuating the sterotype that intelligent people are assholes it makes otherwise intelligent kids grow up pretending to be dumb and avoiding looking too smart or face being ostracized. Further, while I can't disagree with the reality TV nonsense, bitching about liking sports or soaps making you stupid is really just more evidence of being an arrogant elitist. I love it when people like you cry about how "everyone is the same" and then equate any personal tastes and preferences that don't match with yours as stupid.
Believe it or not, while not everyone is incredibly smart, well educated, or have the same personal preferences, almost everyone hates a prick.
People are stupid, almost without fail. A Person is rarely that stupid.
I think this is actually false, but it would be interesting to see some real statistics on it. Think about what you send to who. There are plently of little sheeple types that all think and behave the same, but are these the types that typically keep up on current events beyond crap like Britney Watch? I mean really most of my friends have a WIDE range of opinions on a WIDE range of topics and we constantly send eachother point/counterpoint stories, not just stories that will provide mental masturbation as we all nod and agree.
I'm telling you, even amongst the most herd mentalities of political parties and religious groups, get them into smaller groups and make them actually describe what they believe and why and you will likely start a brawl amongst them (they don't tend to deal with differing opinions well). They all think they think alike, and the illusion is blissfully maintained so long as they don't have to think for themselves or form their own opinions, but make them talk about that stuff, think about that stuff, without giving them the opportunity to express herd mentality for eachother and you will frequently see divergent points.
Because Linux is reasonably secure through design. Vista on the otherhand was spending to much time enabling and disabling Aero (sounds like Aqua) or otherwise spinning it's wheels trying to operate. There is also the possiblity that the user couldn't configure the networking properly as they have added at least 1 or 2 more layers worth of garbage to dig through to muck with properties on a wireless card. Then the problem I had with vista is that it would randomly quit communicating on wireless, it would still be associated, and reassociate, it wouldn't pass traffic without digging all the way in to disable the adapter and reenable it.
To be reasonably fair... Everyone is going on about how Mac is less secure, which really is a pretty garbage argument here. Safari had the hole, and it is pretty trivial to swap browsers and still have full functionality. Windows had their browser integrated (remember the testimony that said this was required), and thus IE garbage DOES count against Windows as an OS. Safari/Mozilla/Opera/etc browser vulnerabilities don't count against the OS just because it is the default install. It amuses me because when this is a Linux vs Windows security story everyone is quick to point out that exploiting additional applications, default install or not, doesn't count against the OS unless that application is integrated into the OS. They cry that the papers show X vulnerabilites in Linux and Y in Windows and say that X goes beyond just the OS while Y is OS only. Yet, when the same thing happens to Mac everyone jumps on it. So this is just Fanboi in reverse.
And yes, I do believe a lot of this was street cred. If these people were hacking for money they would be making WAY more in black market dealings. It is way sexier to steal the Porsche than the Yugo. Because let's face it, even if the Mac fell last who do you think would be getting the most attention, the guy who hacked Vista, Ubuntu, or the Mac?
You are still stretching "government service" quite a bit by trying to include the military. The military is the military, all the other non DoD organizations (IRS, Post Office, INS, FBI, CIA, Department of anything other than Defense) are all civilian. Even so, accidentally shipping live nukes across the US, accidentally shipping ICBM nose cones to Taiwan, and a HUGE list of near nuclear disasters and mishaps and a few outright "we kinda lost the nuke" would seem to indicate that the Nuclear Weapons program isn't exactly a smashing success.
Please proceed to the counter to have your geek card revoked for the combined failure in incorrectly citing a classic AND incorrectly using a hyperlink and inadvertently pointing out your own first failure.
There have been covert letter opening things around for a long while, and I would hardly call the Post Office working as advertised. It is with relatively consistent frequency that a story pops up of a letter being delivered 40+ years after it was sent. Though, I would agree, it is probably one of the better operating government agencies, which really is a bit depressing when you think about it. The fact that "Going Postal" is a common phrase speaks worlds to the problems there.:)
First. Those are military actions not government services so that is entirely different. Even if you count the program of building the nukes, that wasn't exactly a smooth sailing endeavor if you bother to read the history of it all. In fact, I would classify putting people in the field and detonating them to determine the effects of radiation on people is a pretty big failure of that program.
You seem to have been drinking the media kool-aid. Muslims have condemned the bombings, quite frequently, quite loudly, but a bunch of ignorant fuck Christians keep chanting the Islam is violent thing as they worship their Idiot Box tuned to Fox News. The truth is fundamentalists are violent, and you are right, it isn't an apt comparison, because the largest muslim nations have been destabilized beyond repair by good god fearing Christian nations. All of those psycho fuck leaders in power have been put into place by good God fearing Christians because any psycho fuck dictator was better than anyone that seemed a little to leftist. If you bother to read the history books you would know how long Christians have been doing the greater good and conquering and murdering Muslims or Jews for reasons from money to God... None of them are innocent (Please rearrange Muslim, Jew, and Christian as you please, regardless of reading all combinations are correct). I suppose the Inquisition and Witch Trials were just to help stop...well...whatever supersticious nonsense the Christians have come up with today to steal power and wealth from their neighbors.
I never called our culture civilized, but hey, once again it is a predominately Christian culture that was heavily influenced by movements such as Calvanism (The belief that the rich and powerful are loved and accepted by God and thus the reason for their richness and power). In fact, I personally believe the Christian forces manipulating our government to take our freedoms are far more dangerous than any Muslim fundamentalist.
Oh and the biggest killers in the name of God are Christianity, Judaism, and Islam, those are the three religions I was specifically referencing and they all came from the same roots.
But like any good koolaid drinker I am sure you have a million reasons why your chosen faith is better than anyone else and can dutifully list the good things that it has achieved while completely ignoring the horrific. All of the mentioned religions have done good for the world as well, but their balance sheets are pretty shitty and to listen to members of any of those faiths bicker about how any of them have a less murderous past than the others is nearly comical if it wasn't so horrible.
Funny that, I distinctly remember a series of abortion clinic bombings, some pretty murderous tirades from the Phelps crew, and then there is that pesky problem with some of the more unethical things Christian missionaries have done and continue to do. From fake medicine to the occasional bombing, none of the religions that sprang forth from that area are exactly civilized. This of course only deals with the now, if we go ahead and examine some history we can cover a huge host of horrific things done in the name of Christianity. In fact "Kill them all and let God sort them out" came from a Bishop ordering his men to fire on a melee that included his own people and when they protested he told them "Kill them all, for God will surely know his own". So blow that shit right out of your ass...
They will say what every reasonably intelligent person that has been paying attention will say. The fuckers that hijacked that plane and flew it into the towers had valid fucking passports. Nice try, now please, move your chickenshit freedom hating ass to China or Russia where you can be safe and the big brother government will keep you that way. We don't need it, we don't want it, take your nonsense elsewhere.
I thought about that too actually. The biggest piece is that Nintendo doesn't have much of a history of treating their customers like dog shit. They also don't have anywhere NEAR the level of government integration (Comcast between the lobbyists and the regulations is VERY tied to the government, and thus have reasons to "cooperate" among other things). Finally Nintendo sells a product to their customer. Comcast sells their customer as a product to the advertisers. In your relation ship with Nintendo you are the customer, in your relationship with Comcast you are the product.
Just to toss this one out there, but given a technology like this and the obvious backlash, why would he bother telling the truth? Not that it is a conspiracy or anything like that, but seriously, if they ARE looking at doing what is claimed do you think they would say "We are putting cameras in to violate your privacy and expose your daily life to the government" or do you think they would call it "Enhancing the consumer experience".
I hope you haven't forgotten that all of the DRM bullshit in the latest and greatest of Windows products was put there "to enhance the consumer experience" as well.
These guys sell you shackles and call them jewelry.
Just because someone is an asshole does not mean they are a bad boss. Some of my best bosses have been complete assholes at times, and typically for damned good reasons. There is a difference between being a total hardass and being a malicious prick. Personally I hate working for the "really nice" boss. They will never tell you when you are doing something wrong, they rarely give clear guidance on exactly what your place in the big picture is, they almost NEVER will confront slack asses that are dragging workcenters down, and worst of all, they make terrible shit umbrellas. You need a boss that is willing to fight for you, and a "really nice" boss may never fight with you, but he will probably never fight for you either.
Now a malicious prick...a malicious prick is worse than an asshole any day!

I can debunk this one easily.
Google works as advertised and works well.
You name one government service that has ever worked as advertised or worked well.
Clearly, Google is too productive and effective to be a government thing.
