Only if you have $2 (the cost per ticket) saved for college. If you have $35,000, that buys 17,500 tickets. Now your odds of winning are 1-(174999999/175000000)^17500 = one in 10,000.5 I'm guessing this is of the same order as the number of app startups, or at least the ratio of apps that lead to a 7 figure payout.

Science disagrees that "fructose isn't the problem". Fructose is only metabolized by the liver, and a large percentage ends up as fat. In nature, it's found in small quantities, and usually with large amounts of fiber that slow the digestion. It's alcohol without the buzz. http://www.ucsf.edu/science-cafe/articles/obesity-and-metabolic-syndrome-driven-by-fructose-sugar-diet/ There's also a 90 minute lecture on youtube if you have too much time on your hands. And yes, to first order, table sugar=HFCS

I use a UMA on a BlackBerry on campus and elsewhere. I can log on to networks requiring browser configuration just fine, but only BlackBerries had this option when we got our phones, 18 months ago. My wife and I pay an extra $10 a month on a group plan for unlimited UMA minutes, so we use very few tower minutes. Unfortunately, T-Mobile stopped offering that option to new subscribers.

Practical knowledge about manned space flight? That assumes there's anything practical about humans in space. The only reason to have astronauts is PR, a morally dubious risk to human life. When we do return to the moon or go to mars, it should only be after autonomous robots have built us a comfy lab. Until then, investing in technologies to keep our meat alive is a waste of money and an insult to real science.

Actually, you may be more correct than you realized. Reprocessing spent nuclear fuel is a great way to get rare earths. Depending on which, you might have to wait a few years for them to cool down though. In the long term, I think they're our best supply, or perhaps asteroids.

  8. Re:I may be wrong, Im not an astrologer on Ocean Currents Proposed As Cause of Magnetic Field · · Score: 1

"The assumption is that Jupiter tidal forces have insulated it." Tidal forces stretch a body into an oblong shape. The stretching turns mechanical energy into heat--place a rubber band against your upper lip and stretch it, and you'll feel it getting hotter. The energy comes from the rotation of the body. What about angular momentum, you may ask, isn't that conserved? Yes, it is-- as rotation slows, the orbit gets farther out. Eventually, the bodies will become tidally locked, like how one side of the moon always faces the earth, and the heating stops. In this manor, the earth's rotation is slowing and the moons orbit is becoming farther away. In about 700 million years, there will be no more total solar eclipses!

I've NEVER understood the concept of the "second stage" on the moon. Unless whatever you're launching from there is constructed there, you have to 1) Launch out of the earth's gravity. 2) Use fuel to brake while entering the moon's gravity well, since there's no atmosphere. 3) Use more fuel to get back out of the moon's gravity well. Congratulations, you've wasted a ton of fuel! It makes absolutely no sense to use the moon as a base on your way farther out!
