    Well, that's all of us subsidising these corporations to pay lower wages through our taxes and gov services through our social services. People shouldn't put up with that. I'm in favor of needed social services, but not so that companies can pass the buck.

    Sounds like you went to a more expensive school. Tuition was $3,500 a year. About $1,800 a semester. It is a top notch state university.

    I graduated in 2000. College was $3,500/yr full time (although it was free for me via scholarship)
    Now it's around $13,000/yr.
    WTF.

    And it shouldn't just be for college. It should be for vocational and technical training too.

    Going to college for free doesn't mean someone is going to pay all of your living expenses. It's still a net negative to draw it out.

    In any case, how can i tell if my router's been compromised?
    It has been flakey lately but I figured that was just signal interference.

    I think you are assuming that the cost of watching is too high for them to do it at scale.
    It's all software based, and CPU time is cheap and getting cheaper.
    Watching everyone is possible, if not today, then in the near future.

    I've been on Slashdot since the 90's and the BETA kills the community features.

    Slashdot is not a news site. It's a community discussion site. Discussion is almost impossible in the gimped BETA.

    In the US, certain states such as Texas and Georgia offer free University education, and I believe there are other states that do similar. California?

    These are socialist governments by any means. They just realize the practical benefits from doing this. I know people who sent their kids to live with relatives in Georgia their last year of HS so they could go on to University for free.

    I'd argue that starting salaries are high enough, typically $50K to $70K in the USA followed by almost a complete fall off in wage increases with experience/age/responsibility...which is where all the grumbling is coming from.
