ironically...it's largely the educated people in the most developed economies (i.e. Germany/US) who are choosing to have less children. The uneducated and poor in both the developed and undeveloped world continue to churn out kids at record numbers.
Yes, exactly, I think the real problem comes when we look at the number of Americans that are living a marginalized existence...meaning that they can't afford healthcare (even if they have insurance)...can't afford to save for retirement...and can't absorb unexpected expenses (i.e. apartment fire, job loss). I bet that number is more like 35% of Americans...and that's a scary number.
On the other hand, yet another good thing about the Wikileak emerges. Were those data hidden by the secrecy wall, this research would not have been available to the NATO forces over there.
NATO and the DoD are undoubtably running the same kinds of analysis on the data...so this kind of research is most likely already available to the NATO forces in Afganistan. The significance of this is that now it's publicly available.
If I was Scansoft; I would drop them a few million as a thank you for creating Dragon and as acknowledgment of their predicament.
I know Scansoft has not liability or responsibility here...but it would be the stand up thing to do...so long as the Bakers were rightly appreciative of the gesture and not out to create larger problems.
It doesn't necessarily have to come from the ground; or from a static source, or be continuous. Other options are: 1) space based laser 2) larger plane nearby 3) multiple dynamic ground stations 4) shorter bursts that "charge" batteries so no continuous beam required.
Anyone can rise to the top with the right product at the right time. Staying on top is much harder. It will be interesting to see how Apple innovates from here...and how long they can hold on to their position.
China will be the dominant market for iOS devices and Apple products in general in the very near future.
Combined with the rest of Asia, I think the value of getting hardware anywhere in China within a couple of days will be as much of a concern for Apple as getting hardware to Americans in a similar timeframe.
I just feel sorry mostly for the kids in these classes who realize that things don't add up and that they're being duped, but realize they have to go along and nod their head and give the right answers to make it through these classes if they are going to have a chance in hell of getting into college.
I can't believe that my suggestion has been marked troll by all the lazy ass unemployed slashdotters who auto-reject any idea that threatens their weekly free checks!
Shit, people are already on unemployment and not doing shit for it. I propose having people contribute back to the community in exchange for taking social benefits from the community and you all think this is a bad idea!? WTF. Yea, I know it's a radical idea. Give back to the community when they're helping you out.
I have no idea how you ranted into corporate interests. It has no place here. You're afraid that we might displace other jobs? Ok, let's outlaw all volunteerism. It's an absurd argument you make.
I think Anonymous Coward is a good description for the poster.
If you want to turn down a job offer for some reason that's important to you then you that's your choice. Maybe it's the right decision for you. But don't expect to do that on my tax dollar.
Here's the super easy/obvious way to solve unemployment...while helping the country out.
Require 20 hrs of verifiable community service work each week to be on unemployment. Doesn't matter what you do, that's your choice. Teach computer science, clean up a park, write open source code, help the homeless, whatever. The remaining 148 hrs of the week are yours to look for a job.
I GUARANTEE you that at least 50% of people will get off unemployment with in a month.
They do not hate Iran....they only fear them because of their continued attempts to destroy them via Hamas/Hezbolla/Egypt/Syria/etc...and their stated intent to wipe them off the map...while working on nukes.
i.e. as we look across our white picket fences into our our crime infested neighborhoods, we believe that we are living the better life...and that those criminals will go to hell. easy to believe in a hell when you build up the walls and identify people as "others"
spotify has local caching. you mark the stuff you like and it stores it locally. no limit on how much you can store locally. no cell service / wifi / broadband required.
The more you own....the less you own of yourself. The less I own, the freer I am from responsibilities to the material world. I can focus on more important things like spending time with my family/friends, bettering myself, etc.
I don't want to own physical media. I don't want to own digital media that I have to backup and maintain. Actually, I don't really want to own anything...but that's a bigger philosophy.
WRT music, I just want simple, high quality access with local caching on demand. I get that with $10/month from Spotify and free from Pandora/Youtube. I get nearly all the music in the world.
I recently tossed all my CDs after ripping them to my computer. There's no point in storing them anymore. Movies are next. I haven't bought a physical media movie in several yrs.
because we should fight corruption where ever we find it. we live in a small world. shit goes comes around and goes around. we should make it the best world we can, and how that others will do the same for us.

People got along fine for most of human history without air conditioning. In many parts of Europe the homes still do not have air conditioning.
Or without the hyperbole...it takes two 40 hr work wks to pay the rent each month.

keep that wrap range under wraps...will ya?
would be interesting to see what the upgrade cycle will be on this for patients as resolution increases and color perception is added.
...or nearly any where else in the world.
