It seems like it sends a perfectly clear message. DO NOT FUCK UP OR WE WILL HUNT YOU DOWN. The fine wasn't all that steep for what MS can afford. It was another quick bump in the road. What it shows me is that the EU cannot be bought as easily as the US can.
While I agree with your view, I think we should wait until the check clears before we all jump up and down with joy. Until Microsoft is done with appeals or paying for thier actions anything can happen.
You won't be forked by Opensource folks - you maybe forked by corporates who benefit from killing Java or making it unusable.
They could fork it all they want but they wouldn't be able to call it "Java" without Sun's permission. Sun owns the trademark and would still be able to say who can use it.
But for those who like to take their entire collection of books with them (sort of a book iPOD) this might a neat device.
Are you implying that I could somehow easily "rip" my books to a format this could read? If not I'd have to re-purchase all of my books in digital format. No thanks. Dead trees are cheaper and work just fine.
Not to side with the RIAA (I'm not), but the money would no doubt go to cover expenses such as tracking down the users and paying lawyers to file the suit. The artists won't see a dime as this probably just covers the expenses, if that.
I'm reading how OPEN SOURCE will boom in 5-10 years, not linux.
Linux is open source (and free software). So if you say open source will boom then linux is part of that. Linux is important to a lot of readers here so it's natural that folks are going to discuss this article from the point of view of how it'll affect linux.
Do story submitters not read the articles either ?!
Although the linked article mentions linux the submitted slashdot story doesn't. Don't you even read the slashdot story before posting? It looks like you did not.
AOL publishes SPF records for their domain. Run dig +sh aol.com txt to get the record and compare it against where you think you are seeing spam from them.
And for those of us who actually read the article, he says that he likes TiVo better even though he really wanted to like ReplayTV. It was right in the second paragraph.
Umm, given that the major difference between.NET and Java is that one is made by Microsoft and the other by Sun - why exactly is Mono doomed but Java good?
Maybe because Microsoft is a twice convicted abuser of their monopoly position and frequently use either legally questionable or outright illegal methods to harm their competitors? Sun looks like a saint next to Microsoft.
Debian unstable, however, is bleeding edge, but not broken. It's great. Much newer than any other distro.
And what about security patches? How fast are they released for unstable and testing? And don't say to run stable. Security isn't just for servers. It's for desktops and laptops, too.
If we fix the ice crystal problem, we still can't fix the damaged tissue in those folks that have frozen their bodies/heads/etc before...
The people in those situations were banking on nanotechnology having progressed enough that something would be able to repair the damage before reviving them.
Take a introductory drawing class at your local community college. You'll be amazed at what you can do even if you don't consider yourself an artist. I know I was. You already have the motor skills and a drawing class will help you with your perceptive skills. Believe me, this will help your handwriting quite a bit. Also, being able to draw is a skill that you'll appreciate for the rest of your life.
Here's something from comp.editors. The discussion had degenerated into
a comparison of "vim -" running in paging mode, with the normal pagers
"more" vs. "less".

I nominate you for the funniest post of the year in comp.editors.
Aren't/. readers as a whole blasting EV1servers for caving in to Evil Company X's immoral and potentially illegal ultimatums? Yet the articles posted on THIS subject all carry an editorial spin of abandonment when a DN stands up against Evil Company Y's extortionist tactics? WTF?
That's because the comment that you read was writen by a story submitter. Just an average joe like yourself. Just because the submitter, RedWolves2, wrote that DirecTV sounds good to him doesn't mean that everyone else feels that way. From looking at most of the comments in this story it seems that the general concensious is that Dish Network has balls for standing their ground against Viacom and that folks are happy that they are doing it.
Slashdot isn't a borg collective. We all have our opinions. If you don't like that someone's comment doesn't meet the/. status quo, then just let it go. It's just a comment on a website, for christ's sake.

Here's another. And another. And another. Just look for "oil" on the page.

Expertly done. There's a job waiting for you in government.
Seriously, that's what the web is really good at: Giving you the ability to publish your own stuff.
The idea of people being trained to shoot on sight when they see a windows logo just makes me chuckle.

Yeah but will it be For Dummies?
Yep. It seems that most of the spam I see is just jibberish.
