    I think the world needs to be doing a whole lot less reminiscing and a whole lot more work towards advancing neurobiology. It's one thing to talk about how great he was, but what is anyone really doing about it? Do we know if his brain was even saved?!?

    Everyone's in favor of saving Douglas Adams' brain, but when you put it in the body of a great white shark, ooooh, suddenly you've gone too far!

    Douglas Adams isn't dead. It's just that whenever someone works out the meaning of Douglas Adams, he is replaced with an even more inexplicable Douglas Adams. Kinda like Doctor Who.

    In a talk Douglas pointed out that W W W is 9 syllables, 6 more than what the abbreviation stands for 'World Wide Web' He suggested calling it "Triple-U"

    Yeah, but who actually says "W W W" verbally? WWW is a text abbreviation, it is only 3 characters versus 14. The only time I've heard it said verbally, it has been pronounced as "dub dub dub" or "Double Ewes."

    After all, some people only come here to learn about the latest trends, so if we assume everyone already knows the trends, there's not much to talk about.

    I say: screw those people. Not much to talk about? Goddamn, that's so not true.

    If slashdot wasn't overrun with people just wanting to see what the new "trend is," then we could have much more meaningful, informative and contemplative discussions. You know, analyzing the trends, the technology, the science and philosophy.

    If we're just here to say "Look, a new trend!" then that is fundamentally useless. It's nothing more than saying "orange is this year's black" in a fashion column. I thought slashdot was supposed to be about "News for Nerds" and "Stuff that Matters"? Which of those categories does Dvorak fit into?

    It was a serious book that was absolutely ruined, after all. Kind of like I, Robot.

    What was wrong with the movie version of I, Robot? In some ways it is better than the book. Asimov's big problem was that his writing was always way too serious. Not to mention the fact that his human characters and situations bore little resemblance to humans on planet Earth.

    What kind of a friggin' Guru meditation error is that? From my memory, GME screens just said "Guru Meditation Error" in red text, followed by an insanely long string of (hexadecimal?) numerals. Your example is way too helpfully worded to require Guru meditation.

    MacOS already has a virtual desktop. Or did you think that the icons, desktop and windows "inside" your screen are actual physical objects? I know that Macs render graphics nicely, but it's still an illusion created by the computer.

    Please fuck off. A real Apple employee would not be using the royal "we" in the way that you do. You act as if Apple has a single mind, and is not composed of a multitude of individuals and organizations. And a real Apple employee certainly wouldn't be spamming Slashdot with the stories that you relate.

    If you are an Apple employee, then you are incompetent and should be fired. it's interesting that you never say WHO you are - and that you never respond to requests for this information. But you will respond to almost every other type of reply, no matter how irrelevant.

    The things I trust in news sources are the things I trust, and I don't base that trust on what other people think. I certainly don't base that trust on the size or popularity of a media source.

    This is the worst idea I have ever heard from Google. The only thing I can see coming from this is increased media consolidation - and therefore a decrease in the diversity of different viewpoints and outlets for journalism. It seems designed to drive readers back to the old media monopolies that serve us so poorly.

    To quote TFA: he database will be built by continually monitoring the number of stories from all news sources, along with average story length, number with bylines, and number of the bureaux cited, along with how long they have been in business.

    Wow. That's a really bad idea. this means that those large media sources that run the most sensationalistic stories, from which they make the most money and get the most traffic - will be rated as more trustworthy than an honest reporter who doesn't work for a big company and posts detailed analysis that most people aren't interested in.

    How can this do anything but reward the most simplistic, sensational and popular journals with "trust," instead of those who spend time checking facts, rather than promoting sensationalism?

    Get the bl00dy data of the thing first though... ie hunt down and suck out the .pst files and other stuff the user will scream about. And don't forget the baby pictures and their wallpapers as well...

    The people who suggested re-imaging, also said that they have backups of user data. So why bother "hunting down" files on the box, when you can just get them from the backup?

    And what the fuck business does an employee have storing unrecoverable baby pictures and wallpapers on their work machine, anyway?

    In Australia if I buy a CD then its is illegal to make a backup. Its illegal convert the songs to mp3 . Transfering a song from my cd to my iPod is illegal.
