  1. Wasn't the "Do Not Call" list thing supposed to take care of this already? Instead of asking the phone companies to deal with unwanted calls, how about enforcing the Do Not Call list and go to after the source?

  2. The new workplace on Ask Slashdot: Is It Ever OK To Quit Without Giving Notice? · · Score: 2

In the workplace of today, when employers ditch people in favor of cheaper offshore replacement, or downsize you out of a job with no notice, or the myriad of other crap employers pull, I think quitting with no notice is perfectly acceptable. That road goes both ways after all, if employers treat their employees like disposable commodities, we the employees can and should do the exact same thing.

That's how I feel at least. My current employer has treated me well, and seems to treat others well, too. So I'd probably be respectful and give notice. But I think if I worked for a company treating people poorly, I would feel no obligation to be courteous about leaving them.

  4. Any instance where you are using someone elses computer system to do whatever, you have to follow their rules.

When I used to be more involved in the operation of MUDs, it was well known in that community that when you're on someones server, you are pretty much a guest in the operator's house. You follow their rules, or you leave, or get kicked out. Nothing new here, Facebook is the property of Facebook, you are the guest. No one is twisting your arm to participate.

That said, I don't really see why Facebook is mandatory to anyone's life. If it is, there's something wrong with your life, IMHO. I use Facebook under an alias (because I was taught in my younger years, you use an alias online, just how we did things.) The only thing I post is funny crap that comes across my wall, and I only use Facebook to get the occasional funny picture or joke.

Geeze, let people stay on older versions if they want to. This is too much shoving it down people's throats. All the nagging really needs to go away now. People who are interested in upgrading have probably already done so, this is just pissing people off now. I like Windows 10 and this level of shoving is pissing me off. Stop now.

It's really only an impressive feat if he went 25 hours without food and drink. And that mixed bag of deprivation would be pretty unhealthy, too.

There are inserts that fit the Keurigs that you can fill with your own ground coffee, then empty after it's brewed. I'd love to use them, it'd give me a wider variety of coffees. The only problem is that none of them seal properly, water and grounds come out the top and make a mess and the leakage interferes with the brewing. If Keurig really wanted to solve the problem, put the research into modifying the MyK-Cup so it seals properly and the water flows through the grounds rather than off the top and through the open mesh screen.

I use a 3rd party reusable filter basket. It seals very good, I forget the brand name, but I know I got it at Wal-Mart and it's red plastic with a fine mesh screen, and hinged flip top. I've never had it leak grounds into my cup, and I've probably made well over a thousand cups of coffee with it and it's still working perfectly. They were a little pricey ($10 I think?) but well worth it. The reusable filter basket that Keurig makes isn't very good for the reasons you pointed out.

I fished a bit for you on google, and this guy looks a lot like mine: Perfect Pod Eco-Fill Deluxe Refilible Capsule with Permanent Etched Foil Filter For Keurig, 2-Pack

The plastic k-cups are pretty environmentally unfriendly, but the machines, when used appropriately are fantastic. I love mine.

On another note, San Francisco Bay brand coffee pods work in the older Keurig machines and are supposedly 100% biodegradable. My mother uses those because she's lazy, at least they're more responsible than the plastic ones.

  16. By talking about blame, you are saying that we are looking for somebody to punish, which isn't the case. We are looking for causes

um........ why? Would the situation be any different if the science discovered it's not primarily caused by human activity? It's still a problem. Just a little devil's advocate here.

If the opposite were true, we're not causing climate change, and no I'm not denying we are, just curious... would we just go 'oh, its just natural, lets do nothing to try to fix it, lets just let the climate go to hell in a handbasket, cuz we're not the cause.'

That's why I think focusing on the cause isn't as helpful as some might think it is. And we need solutions the majority of the humans will adopt and embrace. There's lots of (in another reply here actually) of painful solutions, but is the majority adopting these solutions? Uhhh..no..

Can't we come up with some solutions to this problem that lets us keep our standard of living? Until we do, I personally doubt there will be an effective adoption of recommended changes. Just my opinion. As I already stated in my original post, even if we cut our emissions to zero this very instant, we still have a problem. We need a counter to the problem, not just a stop emissions resolution. That's not going to help fast enough. It'll help somewhat, but we need something bigger than just cleaning up our act, we need something to clean up the last 150 years of our act, yesterday.

Here's to hoping younger smarter minds than mine can come up with a miracle.

The problems don't start till 2100, and I'll be dead by then. Global warming is future people's problem, NOT mine!

This is the true consensus, exampled by humanity's action (or lack thereof.) I personally don't care what/who caused it, blaming is pointless. The fact nothing is changing to slow it down (if that's even possible at this point, science is still out on that) is all I really care about, and there's of course the 'I won't be around to see the effects.' thought too.

From the few articles I've read, it seems like even if we stopped all CO2 emissions this very instant, we're still in for some rough changes to the climate. So it's pretty easy to get on board with the 'future humans are fucked, no matter what, so why even care?' line of thought.

But again, blaming does nothing, it doesn't fix anything, it doesn't make positive changes. So just spinning our wheels doing 'science' to prove the science is right. How about some solutions people? And cutting emissions is not going to fly, we need a different solution than just cutting emissions, we're past the cutting emissions is gunna amount to much of anything. And it's never going to happen anyway, so solutions that work with the emissions are what is needed.
