  1. Re:More Details on Samsung Cell Phone Features 3GB Hard Drive · · Score: 1

I've looked at the Treo and it seemed unappealing to me because of the style. Doesn't it look like you're speaking into your PDA? I don't think I'm prepared to embrace that geek factor.

I get excited about new phones because I'm hoping for a small flip-phone that lets me surf the web over 802.11b. It's a little discouraging to hear your opinion that WIFI isn't something they want to add. I definitely want it. I would think that many other people would like free WIFI internet access on their cell phones, too. Isn't that enough reason to support creating it? If there is enough demand, then there should be room for profit. Granted, less demand for internet "plans" that give companies continual profit.

I actually already have Sprint PCS. And when I first got it I had a month of the Unlimited Vision Package for free. I didn't like it because my phone has very limited web capabilities. Now if my flip phone had a real browser, I probably would have liked it. Would I have liked it enough to pay an extra $10 a month on top of my monthly cable internet charges? Tough question.

  2. What about... on Credit card signatures: Useless? · · Score: 1

when your children sign for you? If a mother sends her kid to the grocery store and the kid signs his/her name on the mother's card, most places accept it. I don't know if they're SUPPOSED to accept it, but they do. And in today's age of parents having different names from their children, it really doesn't matter who signs who's name. Any old kid could say it's his parent's card and get away with it.

So I ask you, "Why even have signatures?!" They're all but useless.

The new discs will not be compatible. You will need a different color laser and depending on the format, possibly a different laser aperture size. However, there will probably be an expensive option to buy new players that are "back-compatible" in the sense that they have a secondary laser that can read a regular CD/DVD.

  5. Re:Print papers are actually free, comparitavely.. on The Fate of The Free Newspaper · · Score: 1

The physical, tactile newspaper is always going to exist. But it's popularity is doomed in my opinion. Each generation gets more familiar with the web as a whole. And this may just be my experience, but I think less and less young people are getting into the routine of reading the paper with their coffee each day. Now the newspaper execs may blame this on the rising prices of coffee, but I consider the papery paper outdated. I'm 23.

I boycott (block) banner ads. Now if I had been responding to ads in the first place, my choice to block them would actually affect the industry. But the fact remains that in my many years of surfing I have never, even once, bought something because of a banner ad. When I was younger I may have clicked 4 or 5 of them to see what was up. I am no longer a click-contributing person, therefore it makes no difference whether I block ads.

Besides, I would rather see text ads replace banner ads. I don't block text ads.

Thanks for the info. I was going to check out the article to see how far gone you have to be in order to be an internet "addict." But after hearing you describe Young it sounds like she's really got issues with online relationships. I wonder what drives a person to be that nuts about a particular area of research. Judging solely from your comment I'd say her research is probably biased. You're right, I don't get involved in online relationships so I probably shouldn't bother checking her opinion of what constitutes internet addiction.

If what you say were true, religions that have teachings on appropriate sexual behaviors would always favor the behavior that results in the most pregnancies. But in reality, all of these said religions offer views that discourage certain sexual behaviors. Therefore, they must hold these teachings for reasons other than strictly "increasing the flock."

I'm not sure that analogy works in this situation. It would be more like if BMW and Mercedes both used the same engine manufacturer (Linux), and 90% of Linux engines went into BMWs but the Linux CEO decided to drive a Mercedes.

I doubt anyone would be too upset about that.

  10. Re:how big are the pixels? on Samsung Unveils 82 Inch LCD · · Score: 1

The pixels are not that big. You'll find that 82" on the diagonal means 71" wide by 40" tall at a 16:9 aspect ratio. The display has 1920x1080 pixels:

    722 pixels per square inch
    27 dpi

Compare that to my 50" Samsung DLP at home (1280x720)

    863 pixels per square inch
    29.5 dpi

I use my 50" DLP as my computer monitor and it's perfectly readable. If anything, the pixels are too small for me to read easily across the room. I would totally drool over a larger display with a slightly lower dpi such as this one!

  11. Re:How is this better on RollerMouse Aims to Replace the Traditional Mouse · · Score: 2, Informative

A joystick requires you to regulate the force you are applying in a direction without actually moving your finger in that direction. This roller works more like a trackpad, taking motions of your fingers and calculating the force and direction from that.

Up/down speed is controlled by the speed you are rolling the roller. You don't have to push harder to move the cursor faster. And as far as I can tell, lateral movement works exactly like a trackpad (sliding your finger). However, it does work like a joystick in one regard. When you've slid as far to one side as you can, you have to push harder to trigger a button that moves the cursor farther.
