  8. once in his place on Hiring Programmers and The High Cost of Low Quality · · Score: 1

I can tell you that when i graduated in the great job vacuum that was spring/summer/fall of 2003 I was desperate for a job, the previous spring/summer i had sent out hundreds of resume's and used every friend of a friend contact i could, it was all for not, when i did actually talk to HR people they would say "we're firing 5 people this month, i doubt we'll have any interns this summer" so of course this led to no intern experience for me... I wish at the time open source projects where as available as they are now, but I didn't know anything about it... so there i was with a degree and no job, no insurance no experience and no way to gain it, i was working 12-14 hours a day as a handy man for my future in-laws(two sets) and filling out job applications for maybe another 2-3 hours a day, there was no time to join open source projects or program my ti-89 to do cool stuff, i went to sleep, so i could get up the next day and work for 10 dollars an hour to pay off the student loans, car insurance, food, internet, rent etc... It must be so nice to say get experience... when you already have it.
