The Firefox issue raises because of the OS it runs on is much more advanced than Windows or Linux, when a program doesn't use the OS services, it "feels" sluggish. Same thing happens to Opera for example.
I am running OS X here, I report my spam since 1998 since Spamcop.net founded, I get into major fights even with my mail provider for not taking care of problems, I have still a commercial firewall protecting my OS addition to a commercial (read: Heuristics) antivirus.
Nothing in my post says I am Windows user. I just try to be neutral and try to explain the danger of false security. I am not nuts to defend Windows or the stupid users who doesn't spare money or download time to security.
In fact, I suggest the non managed IPs should be banned from Internet until they learn to spare a single mp3 download time for firewalls/antiviruses which are free.
As an additional note, Netcraft "toolbar" is one of the most advanced/reliable anti-phishing solution around. The data is closed unlike phishtank but they have the technology in hand to find out what is the most abused OS/Scripting. It may take 5 minutes with their expertise.
Why they wouldn't they release? Well, my post you replied to has a "overrated" punishment/moderation, it could be the reason.;)
You can easily figure via the "technology" phishing site uses, almost all are hacked PHP. There are only a couple of ASP technology (windows, small business server etc.) I have come across while verifying others submissions. When they take the page down, you generally see "Apache x.x server on Linux" on 404 messages too.
In fact, you can freely use their database to do such research yourself, that philosophy of the site make us "work for free" as everything is open and available to public/developers.
You can verify phishes and you will figure the deal with outdated kernels/php and false sense of security.
Changing content on a website to serve your needs is not very different than infecting a machine with a worm to send millions of messages to people IMHO. In fact as those infected phishing sites are advertised via windows botnets, you know someone has to send "update your details" fake mail.
If you use the netcraft, they of course run outdated kernel and apache with easy to guess passwords (I assume the pwd part)
Whoever got the largest marketshare gets attacked, it is not a "Windows" excuse/apology of course.
I understand what you mean. Check the hacked servers http://www.phishtank.com/ , almost all run Apache on Linux. Why? It has bigger marketshare on webservers.
I think the OS X, Linux, FreeBSD "I am invulnerable because of OS I run, I don't need security updates or basic sense of security" will cause problems soon just like phishing.
"Expat is a stream-oriented XML 1.0 parser library, written in C. Expat was one of the first open source XML parsers and has been incorporated into many open source projects, including the Apache HTTP Server, Mozilla, Perl, Python and PHP."
I think it is time to move new home for that project with coup govt. like that.
MS Puppet companies devices (cheap mp3 players with wma) uses a weird access protocol which was derived (embrace/extend!) from some photography transfer standard.
I had to learn it while struggling to transfer couple of mp3s to a mp3 player on my OS X, had to upload firmware to device.
Funny is, I can browse my PHONE, an ordinary SE K700i via OS X built in bluetooth and upload my aac files to it and they play fine.
There are lots of "blog" sites about Apple , some fanboys, some neutral, some hate Apple. If alpha (developer preview) Leopard (OS X 10.5) had a problem with iTunes/iPod, we would definitely hear it.
It is not "out" yet too and at alpha state. They are also moving from 32bit/64bit hybrid OS to 64bit OS.
So, somebody forgot to code while bribing major media for good reviews/blogs I think;)
I find it amazing that these guys are also Microsoft and they have access to SOURCE CODE of the OS which is not compatible.
I am sure iTunes working perfectly on Leopard preview version (not available to public yet) and iPod working fine too or we would hear it.
I have a good guess about the reason of incompatibility, their famous weird, non standard protocol for interacting with mp3/wma players, another plot to keep Mac/Linux users out in the cold. In fact, I HOPE it is the reason. Some should pay the result of these dirty tricks. I remember browsing Chinese written sites for firmware update for putting couple of songs to friends cheap "playsforsure" USB mp3 player. It turns out MS has broken the file transfer standard, using their own way and forces those cheap music player makers to use it.
Go to a Mac store, click one of the links (using a mac) at http://www.windowsmedia.com/mediaguide/radio , see if it plays. Go to Microsoft.com/mac, try to get Windows Media Player for OS X on that Intel based mac, it will install perfect raping all your browsers and system stability because it runs in Rosetta.
Anything produced in Quicktime can be watched via standards based media players via the configuration tipped at my "ranting" and "incomprehensible" post. If you want iTunes/DRM support, Apple will have to shut up the wmedia trolls first not to rant "DRM DRM"' on Slashdot.
Ranting is something like bitching about Xiph.org just because your mail didn't work which you sent from a DYNAMIC IP. (Checked your Journal)
While I am not a great fan of ogg (because of its fanatics), I respect/thank them for supporting OS X via legit, native way using quicktime codecs sparing their time.
Next time think twice before claiming anything coming from MSFT is "open", someone with "incomprehensible" english may ask you why Macromedia Flash 6+ (VPC 6) became de-facto standard for Web video. Because it works? Why did AVID Tech. choose Quicktime framework ignoring every kind of offer from MS? Because it is monopoly free? They don't want their products to be conspired by MSFT just because it runs perfectly on Macintosh?
Industry has chosen the standards already: H264, VP6 (codec in use via Flash) and MPEG-4 AVC along with Quicktime based container.
Telestream Inc. shows it is possible to add WMV codec to Quicktime on OS X. In fact, my Quicktime also have.ogg and those open video support via codecs too. It also validates people's claims that Microsoft does use WMV Technology to drive people to their OS. Why? While Telestream is a great company and their codec works, it can't be a replacement for MS Wmedia Player for OS X update which will NEVER ship.
There is open, documented and (only needing coders) MPEG-4 H264. It is already supported in some opensource programs I guess. The company matters.
If there was enough people wanting Quicktime , Apple could ship quicktime for Linux along with framework. The issue is: Will Linux/FreeBSD community accept getting closed source DRM? That was what Real Networks dared to mention and we have seen the result at Slashdot.
Apple will also keep some of Quicktime closed source. They have a technology in hand which is chosen by Industry giants like AVID Inc. to be used in their high profile applications. Some guys (MSFT) even spoke about "Knife the baby" http://news.zdnet.com/2100-9595_22-512634.html?leg acy=zdnn
Well, there is a good option if you ask me. 3ivx, one of the very advanced companies/coders in business explains at their download page: http://www.3ivx.com/download/unix.html
Note that their codec is the choice for industry for mpeg 4.
As a person who was happy with Yahoo Search, I became slightly (or more) anti-Google because of the stupid searchbars in browsers are defaulting to Google and Google pays them to make it so.
A good outcome: Opera, one of the good quality browsers became free. Another: Mozilla got funding. What I can't accept? Apple SAFARI, which is in fact part of $140 OS defaulting to Google and needs a hack to "fix" it.
There is certainly something going on with CNET these days, they seem to publish non investigated, stupid stuff against Intel competitors.
First "AMD will die, they sell good" story and now 380watt PSU story.
I'd fuel them with more fake numbers for uneducated, e.g. while folding 4 proteins (Increase.app) using 100% CPU power, my Quad G5 really uses 480 watts. If I was a regular user, it would be sub 200watt levels, there is a thing called "Bus Slewing" for God's sake.
Also: ". Whether it's related is unclear, but Apple certainly had problems putting G5 PowerPC chips into their laptops on account of heat and power-consumption issues -- eventually it gave up and switched to Intel for this reason, among others."
It is a freaking DESKTOP and SERVER CPU, designed with Workstation in mind nobody in PC World was dreaming about putting Xeon processors inside laptops. Nobody on Apple World except some naive fanboys were thinking a monster RISC chip like G5 would end up in a portable Mac.
Heat issues? Quad G5 is running in 40 Celsius here during normal work. While having ZERO idle time, folding 4 proteins same time, 64.6 Celsius.
I have a guest right now and he has never used a Mac in his life, he saw my Quad G5 with Finder running, he said "So this is Macintosh, it doesn't have viruses or crash yes?"
It takes decades to get that image. Apple is right to protect that image with all costs. Making some nerds, "lets try this too" guys mad is cheaper than going Chapter 11 and leaving IT scene without Apple.
Very easy, we are the guys (Mac computer owners) who pay for hardware and hardware sales funds the OS X development. So when you run it on white box PC, our funding goes to some guy which runs OS which was not intended to run on that machine first place.
Go support Linux and great overlooked window managers like WindowMaker , support the projects trying to convince Apple to support OpenSTEP.
Every cracked OS X on White Box PC is a loss for Linux/FreeBSD desktop in fact.
Does iTunes or Quicktime make your XP SP2 browsers crash and when you go to Apple.com for update, are you routed to another 3rd party developer?
Does Quicktime/iTunes make your 64bit CPU having horrible overall system performance problem, compatibility problems because it was never updated for that CPU?
Do you feel like Application shouts like "Die you bastard, you didn't choose our OS?"
Oh also, WMP10 audio quality is a joke compared to AAC. Even Real Networks moved to AAC on high bandwidth content.
They are so against other platforms that they even discontinued their Windows Media Player for OS X/Mac. Mac is where money making music downloads started.
They now offer third party Quicktime component for free which can't do live radio, DRM. Lets be glad that the 3rd party developer is a clean and respected company in professional video business. It could be very different case if they didn't exist and knowing how to code better than MS ever could.
I can't comment on WMP 11, it doesn't exist on OS X which plays mostly the music/video actually created on OS X machines/workstations/studios.
I will keep thanking Real Networks for never abandoning Mac/Linux platform and possibly get claims like getting paid by them to write those comments though.
Apple supply problems. FreeScale said only 5% of their processors were purchased by Apple. I have never heard any problem with G5 (PPC970) from IBM too.
Apple can switch to AMD right now? If there isn't an exclusive agreement with Intel, why not? I can't remember any Intel PR person promoting Intel CISC CPUs like Steve Jobs did...
Why not AMD OPTION, some of us said. It was clearly an exclusive agreement with Intel locking up Apple to Intel brand processors.
Why XServe can't use AMD server CPUs? They don't have any kind of supply problem and every serious server manufacturer gives the option.
Think about why...
While moving to X86, Apple should get rid of single CPU manufacturer problem. They have chosen not to do it. X86'es power comes from choice.
What if Intel has some problems in the future? Impossible? Well, while using Amiga 500, if anyone told me Commodore will go out of business years later, I would laugh to his face. Same for Atari too.
There isn't a single invulnerable company in this business.
BTW, I have a good guess what will fix AMD problem, IBM will rent a factory as old days. That's all.
I am a quad G5 owner and I would buy AMD only if I setup a huge server or rendering farm. So, please don't call people "fanboy" while they speak about choice.
Disclaimer: I have too much things against Apple, especially our great Cult leader, Steve Jobs to be correct. Making Apple a Intel posterchild right after switching CPU Arch, tricking entire Mac community that "universal binary" can be done with single click (yes, those stupid developers can't find that switch), giving bad name to PowerPC while only their lame ass G4'es had FSB etc. problems, manufacturing low quality Intel based laptops tricking people with brand, making an entire community Intel puppets starting to bitch about AMD too, stating never-heard lame "4x faster" allegations comparing Xeon based servers to G5s...
Anyway, entire gaming planet has chosen Power architecture based CPUs, on their 1920x1080 3d output monsters even.
If Firefox (Mozilla) is not keeping up with technology fast, where is the OS X support? E.g. will there be a Safari update to support that thing? Why not? There, Apple.com, traditional business with "security department", will they ship it?
If Verisign loses the "compatibility", there won't be any Verisign in matter of couple of years. Remember I said it.
SSL'es power comes from Compatibility. When you implement a SSL site with Verisign, you know your clients, even the ones using Opera on their Symbian PDA's will have no problem accessing it,with same security standard.
Oh, what about Symbian support Verisign? They don't keep up with technology too I guess:) I am nearly sure that it will be implemented on Windows CE next.
I remember first days when Outlook Express came with S/MIME support. When you wanted it, a IE page opened with huge Verisign icon asking for $$$ for a full feature certificate. It took years for some to figure there is Thawte.com which gives them for FREE.
"To this end, and through our involvement with the CA Browser Forum, we are working with the American Bar Association Information Security Committee, browser manufacturers such as Mozilla, KDE, Microsoft and Opera as well as leading CAs to define industry standard online identity assurance processes that will serve to reassure all our customers of our dedication to building a trusted digital future that instills confidence and trust in all internet users."
So, there is a open technology which will be supported by ALL browsers (Read KDE as Apple). You know what to install from who.
SGI, the company which brought us OpenGL technology may have some patents and intellectual property. It doesn't have to be "troll". Remember 3dfx was crying that Nvidia is using their inventions and nobody were taking them serious. Nvidia later purchased 3dfx for their inventions/intellectual property. So, there was really something going on.
SGI isn't a newly founded company to sue people around and it doesn't deserve to be called "patent troll" automatically without reading anything.
As OS X user I am glad they created OpenGL technology and kept up supporting it until they went broke. I have no clue what would happen if OpenGL wasn't around and MS is alone with their Direct3d technology.
I just did a spotlight search (os x local search engine) on my system for "Silicon Graphics" , dozens of readme, license, acknowledgements popped up, including OS X'es own.
If they really invented something and that was stolen from them, they should sue.
"The Microsoft File" by Wendy Goldman Rohm focuses on OS/2 days and Novell, IBM involvement with Microsoft.

Novell should have get their lesson and ask IBM about what it means to partner with Microsoft on an OS.
IBM couldn't manage to deal with them as "Big Blue", lets see what Novell will do.
If you like the Mozilla rendering engine, get Camino. It is built using OS X Frameworks/Technologies and engine is Gecko.
