    It can't beep even since mac has no beeper built in...

    With all the respect to Debian... Come on guys... Supporting/Donating/Helping Fink looks like much rational choice to me. Especially seeing this community "flamebait -1" every comment they don't like...

    I'll go with Fink if I get interested in compiled software...

    I am not a developer but doesn't CPU producers give simple detection schemes for processor to use optimized routines for that processor in single executable?

    e.g. I run Graphics Converter here, it uses G5 optimizations while compressing jpeg2000.

    I am not american but Apple is, if its a concern for you.

    Apple article also doesn't mention Macromedia and Microsoft installers fsck up the install.log rights.

    Does latest security update article say "It will rape all of your permissions after install, one random day, in one point you can waste hours of productivity because of an application not working right?"

    I think one of the best features of OS X since day 1 is the automated permissions repairing which is done with user intervention since companies like Macromedia and Microsoft messes with some very critical permissions which will create problems with UPDATE INSTALLATIONS. I can't imagine you or the other über cool flamebaiter helping an end user which can't install his latest game because of some random update he gets from Apple fscked up his home directory rights.

    We are stupid mac users wanting hassle free system and we don't like to mess with god damn chown etc while working.

    I love to see permissions repaired. I hope similar tool will be donated to Linux/FreeBSD community by Opendarwin coders.

    The system , Apple Installer is one of the MOST DANGEROUS apple code in planet btw. Ask any developer about it. Also updater has been updated itself and does PATCHING work.

    Are you ok now? I'd suggest that for your nerves, stay away from apple.slashdot.org ... Bunch of end users here anyway.

    Its firewire so it can be detached I guess. Why you guys don't unplug it for 10 mins?

    Another question is of course, can't the KERNEL CODER level people in Apple make a simple program to disable some firewire drives while updating?

    Also... Isn't the firewire drive issue raises because of a "oxford semiconductor" faulty chip and isn't it fixed with a firmware update?

    See? Its after software update. Also one of the files updated every time when mac os x gets minor update is: Disk permissions database.

    Also they suggest using Coctail (shareware, $$$) for such simple tasks? Why not Onyx?

    Stay away from self suggested "mac geeks" my friend.

    Maybe its one of reasons. Also I think Africa market is not so small since there is a huge and rich country named South Africa there. There must be others too.

    I know a designer using a $10k+ custom built Apple and using Apple Pro mouse came with that freaky thing.

    Well, the apps he uses got triple click etc and he uses keyboard shortcuts, macros a lot.

    I'd be really fine with Apple mouse came with my G5. It has a genius design taking advantage (yes!) of single button setup that whole mouse is the button.

    Only thing missing is a WHEEL. Wheel makes you addict after using it 1 day. You start to hate scrollbars while browsing. Well, another way exist, use excellent speech recognition to scroll page but you will lose your voice after 1 day :)

    If any Apple people read this using pro mouse, see where your thumb finger is. Imagine a wheel under it. Yes, left side (or right side) of mouse.

    I hope someone steals/uses this idea if it hasn't been done yet ;)

    Using OS X for more than a year as my only OS I really don't get one thing.

    Why the x86 Linux/BSD people love OS X and not using WindowMaker as their desktop?

    If just 3x people use windowmaker as their desktop it will lead to real interesting places in just 1 year.

    I used windowmaker for 1 year back on my Linux days, now on OS X , I moved dock to right side, having lots of "dock apps" which are OS X native but still OpenStep (I think?) I really wonder why people doesn't at least try that little window manager and environment...

    KDE and Gnome. One uses "K!", other uses "foot", start menu... Ahem, Microsoft does it better if you want a start menu people...

    I bet there are start menu like utilities on OS X (launcher?) but really, I am staying away from them. I try some NEW inventions like QuickSilver. Now thats worth trying since its also a NEW approach. As usual, they have Cocoa power at back I guess. Did I say I am only end user?

    People, its easy to download windowmaker with 56k modem even. If you liked a single screen, aspect of OS X, try it.

    Well, Skype is paranoid in fact.

    It didn't accept my premium credit card because of my country. It also openly tells it, giving some country names like Spain.

    So, it seems uber spyware developer got paranoid himself.

    BTW, I'd label myself "stupid" giving them a virtually limitless credit card number.
