Just like in south park, the problem lies in the smug levels of the people buying these systems. They tout their systems (What are you crazy? I cant play on STANDARD definition) and feed the hype, but its an inflated level of 'coolness' that the games just cant hold up to. Flashy games are usally boring, half baked ideas. I can barely stand to play any of the games today, playing mostly old emulators (River City Ransom booyaa).
This reminds me of the south park episode where eric dresses up as awesome-o, and he finds out butters has an embarassing video of him. Why is it that someone can act like an idiot, record it, and sue someone who releases it. I feel like splitting my pants in the background of a CNN live air show and sueing them for ruining my life due to embarassment
What we're really seeing here is the invisible hand of the market correcting an imbalance that's existed for a long time. The stick is piracy: studios don't like it, obviously. The carrot is, if you release the film on DVD immediately, people will buy that instead of the pirated version. A win for everyone except the pirates and the theaters.
Not so, as the pirated versions will be dvd rips instead of cams. I think that the problem is becoming more apparent for the theatres now because people's home setups are becoming more and more like theatres. The person with the HD TV and 500+ Watt Surround Sound system is going to stay away from the theatre far more often than the person with the 20" SD TV. If what they say about the adoption rate of HD TV sets and the ever declining prices of Quality Sound systems, movie theatres will be hard pressed to bring anyone in if they dont have a sensory edge anymore.
Say what you want about it being Blizzard's game and they can set the rules blah blah, but they damn well better set the rules for everyone. This notion that some of their players aren't mature enough to be tolerant is bunk.
Well it really isnt bunk. For the same reason why I cant refer to my female dog or type that im going to have a brittish slang ciggarette. Sure you can use these words in proper context without any derogatory context, but you and I know better. Just being the devils advocate here
Let's face it, time can be valuable. Especially in your case. I don't make nearly as much as you but even for me my time would be better spent working for money and buying that epic mount rather than working for in-game gold
Herein lies the problem. People dont even recognize that they are playing a game. Does getting that gold or item make the game more enjoyable? It simulates progression when there really isnt any at all. That level 60 character is having no more fun than the level 10, I would even argue that he has less fun. These games are time sinks, and I actually find it amusing that people can pay a company to work for them....because it is work. If you are seeing getting gold (AKA playing the game) as a tedious, boring task, then perhaps you should consider that you shouldnt be playing. But I cant just throw away my account....ive made such a huge investment of time. The reality is that there is no investment. You were playing a game, you should have been having fun. There are tons of people with more stuff/levels/jobs/whatever than you, and no matter how much you play, there will always be. Consider this: Take your account, no matter what level, and erase it. Make a new account. Are you looking forward to playing now? If the answer is no, then that means that, in all that time you played, you probably were never having fun anyways. Just my thoughts....
I have no sympathy for these players for the following reasons
1. If they live in China, play on a chineese server. Period.
2. If they live in North America, learn the language. It pisses me off to no end when there are immigrants in this country who live in packs who talk in their native language, who have no intention of ever learning one of our national languages.
3. You arnt being pulled over and beaten by cops, you arnt getting your land stolen from you, you arnt being forced to build a railroad. FIND ANNOTHER CLAN. FIND ANNOTHER SERVER. LIVE WITH IT!!!
The author seems to have some idea in his head about how all games have buttons you press to do something. Except he can't seem to get it across what is A bad about this B what the alternative is.
Thats his whole point. There isn't anything wrong with conventional controllers as far as video game players are concerned. It is 100% functional and can get the job done. But the question is, is there a better way it can be done? If we were do design a controller today, without any care for how conventional games play and what people are used to, how would we design it?
Its like comparing VI to other editing programs. VI is fully functional, but if you give it to someone who has never used it before, and you will see that there is a huge learning curve. If the technology were perfected, wouldn't it be great for new users if you could orally dictate what you wanted to do? "Make this paragraph double spaced" as opposed to selecting the menu tabs FORMAT, PARAGRAPH, SPACING then changing it. Functional? Yes, but it just isnt intuitive.
That is what nintendo is trying to change. If you can accept it, with out any preconceptions, it can be a very intuitive control scheme, which when games are based upon this scheme, can be 100% functional.
It is actually rather similar to cars, if you stop and think about it. If there was a group of people on annother planet, whom had never driven or seen a car in their entire life, and we were to design the car controls for these people, with all the knowledge we have now, do you really think that these cars would have steering wheels and foot pedals? I dont.
We expect [the Revolution controller] to become the standard in video game controls.
Firstly, i think that neither sony or microsoft will relinquish the standard controller designs, even if the revolution is a smashing success. It will never be the standard.
Given how Microsoft and Sony have been bitch-slapping Nintendo in the console arena, they had to come up with something special to stay in the game...and it looks like they have.
Secondly, I hardly consider being the most profitable gaming console of this past generation as getting 'bitch slapped'.
I was planning on saying something interesting, but Im fresh out of new Ideas:p
Seriously though, to me, the elimination of levels isnt revolutionary. Getting rid of load times, changes of scenes, and getting rid of mission objectives. Thats all there is to levels. Several games get rid of a few of these three elements. All wolfenstein is planning to do is get rid of all three? It doesnt seem all that revolutionary to me.
Well, if in fact Microsoft is losing money with each Xbox360 sold, then it would be in their best interests to keep these stores with as few of them (but always some in or coming in) so that the retailers will have a high demand for the xbox, and as such they can put together more elaborate bundles, because they know that someone is waiting in line to buy. Im sure with some of these bundles, the loss from the xbox is recovered and perhaps some profit is even made.
Consider their "limited release numbers" early adoption beta testing
Perhaps, but it may be the case that you have it backwards. I think that there is a chance that, similar to Rare's Perfect Dark Zero, Xboxes were manufactured before testing was completed, in order to make the release date. Once it was determined that there was a problem affecting a decent percentage of xboxes, it was already too late to push back the release date, so instead, damage control was done and the xbox was release in limited numbers as a 'planned shortage' as to still hit their release date, while not upsetting a large number of people, as the people who were forced to wait for the second shipment will recieve the patched xboxes.
On a side note, my girlfriend who won an xbox360 in the pepsi contest had recieve a non functional system, a fairly common problem I've heard
The problem with pay-for-content is that it hurts innovation. People wont pay to try new creative programs out. Night Stand, Home Movies, Joe Shmoe, Oblongs; These are all shoes I watch/have watched but are more out there with their show concepts. Content developers will be less inclined to take risks, unless of course they distribute their first few episodes for free or something. Lastly, where does public access and government airings fit into this? What about news? I watch the news all the time, but I would be hard pressed to pay for it...
But how do you want the gameplay "reinvented"? I often hear people request this with respect to games, but they never really seem to be able to pinpoint what specific changes they'd like. Perhaps you can offer some suggestions?
stab them with your nintendo revolution controller
The Canon announcement is only for Asia and it only offers to fix the camera if and when it starts showing symptoms of the problems. As far as I'm concerned, that's bogus. They should offer a general recall and repair/replacement of all models affected so people don't lose the once-in-a-lifetime events they bought these cameras to capture.
I cant stand when a customer thinks this way. Sony has said in North America that the problems are rare. If they sell a million cameras and a couple hundred have symptoms, then why replace the rest? For your kids first steps that may come out blurry one day? please. Airlines can save lives during a crash by having rearward facing seats. The increased weight in the fuselage for structural integrity means more money, about 22 million dollars per life saved. They wont shell out for future problems which account to actual lives, and you are bitching about a company not replacing your camera because if, in the rare occurance a problem does arise, you might miss a treasured moment? Go to walmart and buy a 10 dollar disposable camera backup and stop whining.
As part of their deal with the global software giant and No. 2 video game console maker, Universal and Fox will pay Microsoft $5 million plus a percentage of movie ticket sales. The price is capped at 10 percent of domestic box office receipts.
So if the movie makes $50 mil domestically, All Microsoft gets is $5 mil. They were negotiating for more I guess MS was shown the middle finger.
Taking 10 percent of gross box office receipts is taking a decent portion of the profit. 10 percent gross is a good deal for a licencee with no financial risk
I find that alot of the button pressing challenge has been lost in zelda games.
Zelda 1 and 2 were very difficult games to pass. Link to the past was more puzzle oriented, but still had many difficult areas to pass.
Full 3D immersion in Ocarina made the game sooooo easy to play; it was more or less just a puzzle game. There was never an occurance where I lost all my life. The water level was utterly boring.
Although I havent played windwaker, the claims of boredom lead me to believe that Nintendo has forgotten what made this game series great.
I want a game where I die often and am genuinely challenged. I know many people who can't pass zelda 2 because it is really that difficult of a game.
Movies arnt big when they are fitted to the low resolution of an ipod with only 2 channel audio in mpeg4. im sure they can sqeeze it into 300 megabytes per vid

If your worried about the sound of the fan on your PC for multimedia, you obviously dont have a loud enough speaker setup. 500+ Watts all the way
