    nevertheless we do practical things with nuclear transmutation, from medical applications to electronics (-quiz question) to power plants. And we make practical use of particles other than electron, proton, neutron and photon.

    if you haven't noticed, the Unix(tm) world is self-destructing mostly due to greed. SCO Unix, IRIX, HP/UX, Solaris.....going, going and soon mostly gone. AIX a little different, just fading because IBM would rather push other solutions. Unix(tm) lost. BSD used hugely in the control/appliance space. But Unix lost. Your beloved Unix generally won't have a flavor that scales from cell phone to massive SMP machine, or from single processor server to massive parallel supercomputer. But Linux covers that, and BSD *could* but usually is chosen not too.

    No, several internationally funded telescopes are. They provide information on the cosmos beyond the Standard Model and are giving us new physics. Accelerating expansion of the universe, dark matter, variations in the CMB from the dawn of space-time....we can't build accelerators big enough to probe that scale of physics.

    in small quantities, the C-13 is $200 / gram. less of course in bulk. the major market right now is pharmy. c12 is waste product of that process, it's cheap.

    we did NOT get quantum mechanics from either special nor general relativity; in fact the first quantum mechanical equations were the non-relativistic form. Adding relativity to them gave us model for thing known as "spin"

    do a little research, lab grown pure carbon diamonds approach the cost of a gemstone at sizes over half a carat, cheaper for a smaller one. but that means on the order of some few thousands of dollars, not whatever you are imagining.

    The laugh is that those 1960s sytems had, for additional money, configurations for 24x7 uptime. Here we supposedly design for that with the cloud architecture, and fail. I would not be surprised at all if the modern mainframe were a cost effective alternative to this bloated expensive cloud.

    wrong. it is not ok to enforce laws made by politicians in the pockets of power and money grubbing scum such as the RIAA. It is not ok to allow "allegations" of infringement without a shred of proof to be the basis for denying anyone the service for which they have paid.
