    We have good cellular pre-paid prices in Canada, they are just hard to find. Try Petro-Canada mobility or 7-11 Speakout wireless with their 1 - year expiring minute plans. All piggy back on the rogers network, but prices as low as $2 a month with free caller ID and voicemail goes a lot easier on the pocketbook. Swap the sim into your iphone if you perfer, no data but low prices for voice and text.

    Walmart in Canada often has some great deals until $400 Cdn. on machines with 15" screens. I'm writing this from my new macbook, which cost a heck of a lot more but it was worth it for OS X.

    Should be pretty easy thing to detect. Do a get of several domains you know shouldn't exist: ie: kg84jrtuwerufhg3r4.com and see what response you get from DNS servers. You could even go so far as to do a whois lookup to see if they are in fact registered or not.

    I disagree. Many or even most Windows users aren't smart enough to know that another browser exists or even that it is possible for another browser to run on their computer, after all - how can you explore the internet without internet explorer? I feel that when your company is a large monopoly, the free market is not capable of competing. Cellular and broadband internet are good examples of this problem in many areas too.

    Sometimes bar workers would like to know where those cute girls live so they can follow them home later. Scanning their address into their computer makes it much simpler.

    I'm pretty sure what Shakrai says is correct - every time my GSM phone "talks" to a tower for anything I get a very loud annoying beeping over every nearby speaker... and it doesn't happen very often - maybe 3 times in an hour, in a car I could be a long ways away at that point.

    The tire tax seems like a really good solution actually. The only problem that I can think of would be the tax would have to be very large, which would then create a black market for non-taxed tires from Canada or Mexico.

    Also larger vehicles such as full size SUVS which consume more fuel, are heavier, cause more road damage so a fuel tax system is already far better than a milage based system. Why should I have to pay the same for road maintenance in my Toyota Yaris as a Ford Excursion?
