The bacteria from your mouth have a huge impact on your lifespan (shortening it by 5 to 7 years on average).
So brushing & flossing can impact your lifespan more than many other things you might try. And you lose good years too. Swallowing the bacteria and their toxins causes heart damage. Of course losing your teeth starting at 45 doesn't do wonders for your lifespan (or your sex-life either).
OTH, Some people have severe stomach problems until they get a parasitic worm infestation. For some reason, this infestation fixes them.
Infosys INSISTS that you put your high school graduation date on resumes sent to them.
Given this kind of corporate behavior, I INSIST on lying to them. I worked my way through college in 11 years-- if the company requires a high school graduation date, I put a date 5 years before my college graduation date. They can validate the college date but my high school hasn't existed for a long time.
Many states are "at will" which means they can fire you for any reason.
But if they are inexperienced(usually young managers) they unwisely say in a recordable way that they are firing the person because they are "sick, old, black, female, etc." Even in an "at will" state, this will get you sued.
You can advertise for a "person willing to work long hours, including holidays and weekends for low pay on the promise we will pay you more later" but you can't advertise "We want a YOUNG, dynamic person who is PRETTY as our new sales person."
OTH, I saw a member of a protected group fired with cause (sent a dirty joke to the entire corporate mail list) who then sued the company and put them through 5 or 6 months of pain before losing. So there is a lot of power to the protected classes.
Ageism on the other hand, is frequently used and not punished. Companies will lay off an entire department and then rehire the department a few days later with young people without being punished.
Friend of mine looked for work for 9 months- finding nothing. I advised dying hair. The next job they got.
and you must have not gotten the "casablanca" reference.
Rick: How can you close me up? On what grounds? Captain Renault: I'm shocked, shocked to find that gambling is going on in here! [a croupier hands Renault a pile of money] Croupier: Your winnings, sir. Captain Renault: [sotto voce] Oh, thank you very much. [aloud] Captain Renault: Everybody out at once!
Those moral values are not sad. They are shared by many successful religions (at least as a way to treat fellow members of their religion).
As for the "sad" part. Read his post. He finds the weirdness of another religion "a little sad" while being blind to the weirdness of his own religion.
Christians are often nice people tho they do silly things like making the rest of us worship their god in our pledge of allegiance and on our currency (and quite recently too- we went without them for over 150 years in this country supposedly founded by christians. (actually most of them were deists tho-not christians)).
However, the vast majority of christians literally believe that the earth was flooded and all life was killed by god despite genetic evidence to the contrary (no pinch point in the last 10k years). They literally believe that egypt suffered 10 horrible plagues. They literally believe that Jesus was god and man and he died and was raised and tons of other miracles occurred 2k years ago but now that there are 100 times as many people on the planet- the same god now chooses to ignore us, not provide miracles, etc.
While it is much more likely that the bible is the folk tales of a primitive tribe- the same as Thor's stories in nordic religions, they find it more plausible that god did tons of miracles back in the day (angels and burning bushes, parting the sea, staffs into snakes, prophets who really could tell the future) that today he chooses not to.
Hell- one good miracle (say a huge floating bible orbiting the earth that you could see from the ground) would probably save 5 billion souls- yet god chooses not too.
So they believe all these incredibly goofy things and then smirk under their breath at a mormon or scientologists goofy beliefs (which are REALLY goofy I agree-- seriously the entire "we each get our own planet and have sex forever and produce gods" "drawing circles" ) while being blind to their own goofy beliefs.
---
I respect the fact that you came to religion while you were an adult. I know people change religions or find religion after being athiests or agnostics all the time. But 99% of believers believe in their god entirely because of an accident of birth. Before their logical brain was started, they were praying to god and being brainwashed so they never have a chance when it comes to rationally choosing a religion.
It doesn't have to work 70x to justify 70x the price.
Say you have two cars (har har har... here comes a car analogy).
One goes 200mph and costs 700,000. The other will go 202mph and costs 50 million.
If you are racing to win - then you want the 50 million dollar car even tho the 200mph car is almost as good. Which is why racing competitions frequently have a cash limit. In Nascar, when they state a limit, they have the right to buy any car entered in the limited race for that price. In drag racing, they go the other way- they limit the time. 890 class can run no faster than 8.9 seconds-- those ran about $50k in 2001 when my cousin was racing. Unlimited class run over a million and are not that much faster.
If you buy a CD and share it among all your friends- that's bad.
If you buy a CD, rip the songs, and then your CD is destroyed, lost or stolen, then do you have a right to keep your ripped copy? I think everyone outside of RIAA would say yes.
If you buy a CD, rip it, and then sell the CD- you probably can't keep it however.
If you can- then you can Buy a CD and share it among all your friends by each of you maintaining the legal fiction that you are selling the CD after ripping it. (Each gives the person $4 and takes the Cd. At the end, everyone has the same amount of money and you have your CD back).
Or even sillier, let's kill a lot of our own people because you upset us. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/south_asia/4684652.stm At least five people have been killed in Afghanistan as protests against European cartoons mocking the Prophet Muhammad swept across the country.
Of course, exploding random people who happen to be near other faintly valid targets* is more their lines. That and kidnapping random people and beheading them.
--- * while I don't want our young americans to die, I recognize that they are in a foreign country and are legitimate military targets. However, the children near them, the random shopkeepers (who are also islamic) are not valid targets by any shred of the imagination.
--- We get the message- piss christians off and they will complain, march, vote, etc. Some people that call themselves christians will murder but the rest of christians will be shocked and say it is a bad thing. In fact christians are much more likely to beat the hell out of each other for wearing a Teasip shirt into an OU bar (and it was an oklahoma church deacon at that!) than over a religious issue. And I say that as a non-christian.
But if I piss off a islamic people, those that do violence to me will be silently supported by the islamic community. Around the entire world, they repeatedly get caught bombing, murdering, kidnapping, etc. people. If it goes on, we really do have a war of civilizations setting up.
And for that reason, I'm glad that they are anti-science.
Hell, they only have to kill two or three journalists to shut up the entire western media for months or even years at a time.
They only have to behead a few scientists and the rest who can't get away from the country stop mouthing off.
The same thing happened in Russia with genetics and it set them back by decades.
The christians and other sects in the US were mad but peaceful during things like "piss christ" and they use the political process to enforce their beliefs on the rest of us, not the machete.
Both Religions from the same geographical area of the world have large numbers of believes (and so will share "large organization" inertia, bureaucracy and other limits and behaviors) monotheistic (separating them from several other major religions) have "fundamentalist" and "moderate" sects. have human followers who teach (brainwash) their children when young about the truth of the religion. are irrational when faced with repeatable scientific evidence. believe miracles really happen (separating them from a lot of eastern faiths) have large parts which are "top down" rather than "bottom up" so a few leaders can shift the religion significantly.
I agree that the two religions are not the same- they are different in many ways.
However their commonalities should allow us to draw conclusions about their likely behavior. The traits of two different large heavily armored herbivores are going to be similar. The traits of two different animals that eat the same food have been observed to converge over time.
However, while i do not entirely agree with you- it could be they will grow apart rather than together. The results of that would probably be fairly bad.
The most likely change I see are growth of religious values as the quasi-catholic hispanic population becomes a majority. They will have a majority of the population in the south soon. Once a population becomes the majority, it typically starts enforcing its values on the rest of the population.
A person who believes in one religion easily sees the follies of other religions while remaining amazingly ignorant of how sad their own faith seems to unbelievers.
To me, it feels like you had a part of your brain damaged and turned off when you were a child by your parents before you could protect yourself.
My first question was does UK have presumption of innocence so when I googled for that it looks like they do.
I still remember my time on a jury here in the US. We had one lady that kept insisting "But they haven't PROVED he is innocent!!!" The rest of the jury was aghast and it really took her a while to vote not-guilty (and I'm not sure if she understood- or if she just caved in).
Don't expect admin going forward- and not at major corporations.
The combination of windows virus issues, legal liability for liscenses, sarbanes oxley audits, and malicious (trogan) programs has corporations going towards the same direction for windows.
It used to take us 4-5 days to install our software stack on a new machine- now it can take three weeks. Each piece of non-standard software (and we are web developers so there is a lot compared to the normal desktop users) requires approval and for a PC admin to come buy and signon as admin and observe the installation before signing off as admin.
I know about that way. The other article was about some way of processing multiple images and isolating the best parts of all images without a correction signal.
I find I nap better in my honda element fold down seat bed than in a bed. Which is wierd since it is not flat and fairly tilty and I can't roll on my side.
I guess my body expects to nap in it.
I have trouble going to sleep in bed but no trouble dozing off for a nap.
Naps help me a lot. Guess I'm lucky there.
One trick I do use is to pretend I'm driving and trying to stay away. For some reason that helps me nap.
Another cause of this for males starting at age 40+ is declining testosterone.
I went through this- I would get 9 to 10 hours of sleep a night and still be exhausted.
When we finally found out my test had dropped to subnormal levels and started supplementing, I went back to feeling only on 7 to 8 hours of sleep a night. In about a week after I started supplementing.
Low teste also makes it very difficult to think straight and causes a constant anxiety with no particular source.
It is a balancing act.

Agreed.
I have a six pack and veins poking out all over my body.
Play sports regularly.
38" waist.
I eat no bread, potatoes, or sugar.
My blood sugar continues to gradually go higher with each year.
Good to know it is my fault and not the fact that my grandfather, mother, etc. all had diabetes.
