Like it or not- being in a raiding guild (which is required at the high end of the game) means you have attendance requirements. If you are not there 50% of raids, you might as well not be playing the game.
And if you miss a major flagging raid, you could be screwed for months.
And... hell yes I'm addicted. I wouldn't be playing the same game after 8 years if I wasn't. I enjoy the hell out of it even tho I'm down to about six hours a week due to work and relationship constraints.
My company has the distressing habit of taking people who know how to fix problems and moving them to another area. Then when the old area gets in bad distress, they call you at 3:00am 2 years after you last touched the software and say "We need this fixed in 15 minutes or we have to escalate the issue to management!".
My usual thought is, "Well you better start dialing now."
Why do they think anyone is going to remember a damn thing about the intricacies of an obscure custom software package when it has been over a year since they worked on it?

Games- specifically Everquest- are the only reason I still run windows. I have a tiny amount of Word usage for a couple documents that OO is not quite there for (these are 10mb documents) yet.
Yes- theoretically EQ runs on linux, but after any given patch it can stop working for hours or days.
The rest of my software stack is OS/agnostic. From Audacity to Azureus to OOO.
The day I quit EQ for ever will be the last day I use Windows. The next major game I get into is going to have to be on a console or on linux.
I'm not sure if it is true for your wife, but the guy at work who has a russian wife had to sign paperwork saying he was responsible for her welfare costs for the rest of her life- even if they divorce.
It looked like we were about to have a 3rd wave of amnesty where 20 million people became citizens.
They were also going to let them bring in all their direct relatives (another 20-40 mil???)- mothers, fathers, aunts, uncles, sisters, brothers who were not here.
They were also going to give them social security benefits after only 6 quarters of work.
Many of the immigrants from Mexico had foolishly marched with MEXICAN frikkin flags and made anti-us statements within the last two years. Also, many of the mexican immigrants were reported to have an attitude that they were taking back mexican soil for mexico rather than becoming US citizens.
If they had the brains to march with US flags, learn english, and at least say pro-american statements in public this may have passed. They played this very badly.
It may finally start breaking down the unholy alliance of conservatives and corporations which has been driving the republican party for the last 20 years. The dems wanted 20 million new voters and the corporations wanted 20 million cheap workers. Meanwhile 80million+ americans wanted a secure border, realistic wages for jobs, and to stop subsidizing health and medical care for people who drove without insurance and otherwise abused our legal system because they were here illegally.
Estimates are as high as 10 million SSN's for non-citizens in the SSN database. It is a monumental cleanup task. It all starts with a birth certificate which is currently a very insecure document.
I talked to my grandmother too. She was lower class and had plenty of time to go out dancing, have parties, and so on while working as a single mother with my grandpa off in South America.
I agree that on health insurance there was no choice because there was no cure- while now you must work for a corporation or have $700 a month or you die (despite/because there is a cure).
I'll have to research park model homes because right now on a 150k house- the taxes are $3400 a year-- that's 300 a month I have to come up with or I lose my home.
I have to have medical insurance at this point- while in a previous era I would just be dead- now I will be miserable, anxious and exhausted until I die if I do not have ins. The system is set up so that I can't get ins unless I work for a corp. So I agree to be a slave and they agree to le t me live and not feel miserable the rest of my life until my premature death.
I have to say I did a lot of digging here and you are for the mostly correct for America and I'll assume it is similar in other countries.
Two things being ignored is that it now requires two people to work to earn enough money to have a household and that we have had lower working hours in the mid 1930's and the mid 1950's than we do now. So effectively, we now have to work 80 hours a week to have a household where previously 40 hours a week would suffice. Housing has become particularly expensive. However, I would agree that it has increased greatly in quality.
There are several VERY suspicious aspects of the data you are siting however.
Table 5 Division of the Day for the Average Male Household Head over the Course of a Year, 1880 and 1995
Activity
Activity Year 1880 1995
Sleep 8 8* (This doesn't match reality- everyone i know sleeps 7 hours or less and is often tired during the day)
Meals and hygiene 2 2
Chores 2 2
Travel to and from work 1 1 (more like 1.25 hours for most people I know)
How can you cite a survey that shows we work 4.7 hours a day? That's obvious crap on the face of it. I know people that are working two jobs to keep up. I know people working 9 hours a day. Everyone at my company works 8 hours a day minimum.
Care to tell me why his work hours per day are so unrealistic? Even saying we used to work saturdays and now do not (which isn't true) you wouldn't get 4.7 hours. That number is extremely low.
So you would say that having billions of dollars of corporate advertising which keeps secret the true origin of the money behind false names like "people for justice" is good for our system of government?
Things are going downhill so fast these days. I had hopes for my children to not suffer to badly but now I just hope I don't suffer to badly. Religious people who should know better and who should care more are letting all kinds of corruption fester in our government based on one issue. The judges being installed are anti-abortion true- but they are fairly relentlessly pro-corporation. Turning over century old precedence is not my idea of conservative.

And isn't amazing how all the female on female rape is ignored in this thread.
As if females don't get raped and forced to give sex to other females in prison.
Apparently it is only rape if a male is forcing the other person to have sex with them. Forced sex by a female doesn't count.
But don't you understand????
A married man having sex with another woman is much more important than the constitution!
It shows his character is bad. That trumps ignoring the law and the constitution six days a week and sundays as well.
It was odd (since not about tech) but I was glad to see it since i was really angry over this (esp while the border guards continue to rot in prison).
They finally picked it up on Hannity and Colmes.
I do not know why they gave Benoit so much screen time (close to an hour!?!?)
I'm sorry. Sometimes they are not as much stooges as folks think.
But the single biggest story of the day is Libby being commuted and all they are talking about is Benoit's roid rage.
CNN isn't mentioning the story either. This is wierd.
And have been beaten at least once by other prisoners despite a promise to keep them separate which was not upheld.
I am so angry. I can't type what I'm thinking.
If we can't get justice in the courts or through the law, what are we to do?
Unfortunately software are not cars.

The ironic things is this...
Things that break a lot- you stay sharp about fixing them.
Things that break once a year- it can be very tricky to remember how to fix them.
Inconceivable!

I read that the german was
"My dog has no nose"
"How does he smell?"
"Badly!"
I would think there would be a risk of overdose.
I'm sure moost peoople doon't see any prooblem sticking in a few extra oo's.
Hmm. Soounds kinda Scoottish when I read oout looud.
I'm at 15% before adding in gas taxes, sales taxes, property taxes, cell phone taxes. The total is more like 50% after everything they take comes out.
I have to work roughly six months each year to pay my slave dues.
I think three months should be low taxes. Right now federal income taxes are low.
I agree- taxes are low if you are making under $20,000 or over a half million a year.
Well apparently being concise is a quality of answer people so you qualify.
Sometimes RTFA is the answer. Some folks are SFL.
I bloviate much too much to be an answer person.
Plus, I often use the discussions to think about things which I had not previously considered.
Given how the military has worked in the past when tests did not give the desired results and how often models are wrong.
AH well.. maybe in a hundred years it might start getting close.

I have had one vote that mattered in 8 years. Every other vote, it would not have mattered if I voted for or against.
