If those dastardly pirates were stopped, according to the logic of the MPAA, there would be $16.63 billion at the box office! That's a tidy improvement over last year, don't you think?
This particular section of Steve's presentation dealing with the War On Terror doesn't appear on the US-developed Tech.Ed DVDs -- it was censored and removed.
Why? We need an open discussion and censoring based on policy only illustrates an agenda that creates more questions.
Also most music was blatantly stolen. Most Irish jigs are variations of other jigs, and so on. Most of music's evolution is based on the original freedom and freeness the music had.
Just like the fashion industry today! The fashion industry is (almost) entirely based on the copying of ideas (i.e. the "hot" color this season etc.) It seems to be doing fine.
What happened to "Fair Use"? If there's a relevant passage in a book, can I not quote it? Is Viacom complaining about entire episodes or just small portions. For example, if there's a bit about John Stewart ripping on D. Chaney, I don't see the difference between that and quoting a Shakespeare soliloquy (well... one is written better...)
Besides, if it's a good bit, wouldn't I want to see more? Isn't that free advertising?
What's even worse is that most factory installs have no password set for Administrator. Nobody changes the Administrator password on their XP Pro/Home machine because you cannot normally see it. A simple keystroke and Enter and you're in!
XP Home needs a couple more steps, but it's just as bad.
Kinda makes any additional security measures pretty futile.
Burgess Forensics said the reason was that 4,134 files were saved to the hard drive after the screenplays were deleted--overwriting the unused space that could have otherwise been recovered. (Additions included Napster and RealPlayer and their related media files.)
If he dropped a hard-copy on the sidewalk and could only find a few pages when he came back the next day, isn't that his own fault? He should have unplugged the computer and taken it to an expert immediately! I guess he was having too much fun with his new broadband to notice that his "multi-million dollar" script was missing./sarcasm
A contractor may bill $60, but the contracting company gets as much as 65% of that. His/her gross take-home can be as low as $25, specially since health insurance is often up to the contractor. I feel that contractor = $$$ is a myth.
Yeah, I'm so damn sick of the "An application wants to access your email addresses, how long do you want to let it?" (paraphrased, of course) message that appears whenever I HotSync. That was M$'s idea of a "security update" that I installed and cannot remove.
Same here. The thing is, we're not getting paid more any longer, we're getting less. Probably 'cause of the dotcom bust.
You forgot one thing - "Severance Package" - this gives you more time to find another position. The last time I was out of work, it was for over a year! I'ts just not as easy to "jump jobs at the drop of a hat" anymore.
Some of the points you make are good - I 'specially like the "dumb guns" one:)
But if the customer's bill is 1.5(X+Y+Z) (which mine is), and my health benefits, 401(k) etc. are deducted from my gross, that means that they are getting me for less.
Don't forget, as an employee, I'd be getting benifits, PTO, holiday pay, stock purchase plan and (in my case) a greater per-hour. This is all an expense for them, not me.
Hey, that's me! - I've been a contractor for over 18 months. There's a Docs person I know here that's been a contractor since mid-2001. The reason why companys hire contractors is easy - it's cheaper.
I've been told that to be converted would cost the company nearly 3 times the amount they currently pay.
I didn't mean to give the impression that I think illegal downloads are OK. I was just illustrating that there are no "innocent" parties here.
There's an alternative. I plan to make all my future music purchases non-RIAA and from an independent source (i.e. not Wall Mart.)
I've discovered a few podcasts that showcase new music, and you can purchase that music (almost) directly from the musician via their website.
Why support and implicitly condone the actions of the "music industry"? There's plenty of good music out there, we should not have to use payola-centric radio etc. to find it.
Now we have an alternative to the traditional music distribution system, there has to be a change. Suing the customer does not seem like much of a change.
Musicians are probably getting none of these funds - A lot of them would not get any royalties if this music was distributed legally 'cause their contract was signed before the advent of digital music.
For our readers, here's more info on Talon News who "Jeff Gannon" "worked" for and a CNN report
Just as the concept of "reporting" was revolutionized by the invention of the Gutenburg Press, we are witnessing another change, who knows if these changes will be better or worse... At least it'll be better than a Town Crier!

It's a slippery slope if the courts are the ones deciding who is/is not "allowed" protection as a journalist. If this case is to be used as a precident, why not bring James Guckert and the White House staff et. al. to justice for setting this up?
I, for one, welcome our Titan Overlords!

To say that humans have not changed the environment is naive. For example, look around you right now... I'll wait... Can you even _see_ a plant?
In nature, if we're in a place with no plants we're either in 1) desert 2) snow/ice 3) a cave. None of these locations are conducive to our existence.
To say that the human race has not impacted the Earth's ecosystem is like saying the sky is not blue (wait... what about smog? :)
The entire fashion industry is based on copying other peoples work. Let's campaign for DRM (Dress Rights Management) for a change!

The US Postal Service is now required to keep records of every letter and parcel delivered to every address in the US for 6 months.

At first, I thought it was the (talented) Australian actor of the same name http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0860233/. For a second, I though he may be Mickey Tompson http://mshf.com/index.htm?/hof/thompson_mickey.htm
Without this attention, he'd have remained a blip in the background noise...

How do you know? Bwahahah... my plan for world domination is working! hehehe

That way the cracker would need to know all about me (not likely, I'm not that interesting)

It offers a bunch of other stuff (including a Brightmail Anti-Spam filter ) but recently included 2GB mail storage! For only about $40 per Year.
It has some search capabilities, and you can organize your folders, but I don't know how it compares to Gmail.
I have it so I don't ever have to tell all my friends or change my stationary if/when I change my ISP.
I just don't get that much mail!
