Erm, if you read the article you'll discover that this sort of achievement will earn them exactly squat as far as further education opertunities are concerned. Their legal and financial status will prevent them from progressing which, imho, is a terrible pity.
As far as Apple is concerned this is nothing at all to do with the money. It is entirely about putting out the message that if you sign a legally binding NDA and the distribute code/information then they will not stand idly by. The guy broke a contractual agreement that he had and I'm afraid he has to suffer the concequences.
"My signature is basically a W with a line after. I have been told it's "unique". I always reply, "it's fast." Signatures required for credit card purchases are lame. Checking my ID is even worse. I always make sure to be a PITA when they ask for my ID when I pay w/a CC. Paying with plastic is my way around hassle and if they're going to give me one I'm sure to pay them back with some."
Wow - what an odd point of view! I am always far more annoyed/concerned when it is obvious that my signature has *not* been checked. I'd much rather they spent a few extra moments checking that I was the legitimate user of my card, rather than the guy who just mugged me for it (the worst cases being those where they swipe the card, hand it back and only then give you the receipt to sign!). Of course this is becoming less of an issue now that Chip and PIN is being rolled out across the UK but personally I'd be happy if I could order a card with 'Only Accept With Photo ID' printed on it (and yeah, I'd have it as an optional thing - I'm not a fan on compulsory ID cards)
from the BBC
"The investigation was started last October after it was discovered that computer hackers had gained access to Sumitomo Mitsui bank's computer system in London.
They managed to infiltrate the system with keylogging software that would have enabled them to track every button pressed on computer keyboards. "
Sounds like it was the criminals using the software to me!

It's calls for approx 1p per minute FROM a VoIP account - that means they can happily bombard your normal landline (or, in the US where mobiles are considered normal phones to call to, your cell phone) from a VoIP account. This means that blocking them/whitelists will be much harder to achieve (especially as they will almost always come through as 'number unknown' on called ID). It also means that those in the US who get these calls to their cell phones will actually end up *really* paying for spam (for those outside the US the cell system is very different to that in the UK and probably other countries in that your cell number has a normal regional dialing code so those calling you treat it as a normal cost call but you deduct calls to the phone from your 'free minutes' until they expire after which you are paying to receive calls).
This could be bad. Very, very bad.....

And you can, of course, use it with the optional battery back and plug in a couple of AA's...
