Easy answer: Cost. You're not understanding the other side if you think their goal is wanting more pollution, more shitty water, more shitty air, more shitty soil. There's a cost associated with being greener. If you offer me the choice between two products, one that's polluting, one that's green as grass, and the cost is the roughly the same, absolutely I'll choose the greener one. However, if I have to pay a 50% premium to save the environment, then I'm sorry, but given the economic state we're in, I'm probably going to choose the cheaper one. So here's your assignment: find ways to produce things, do things, etc, that are both greener AND cheaper. You do that, and the whole discussion becomes moot, because everyone will be on your side.

I'd push this even further. If I can't return AFTER I buy, I don't buy. Too often, the try before you buy amounts to a demo that amounts to a movie trailer - all the decent content compressed down into a few minutes. With just about every other product on the market, if you buy something and determine it's crap, you can just return it. If that happens with a game... well, sorry, but you're screwed. Game publishers need to institute return policies. Yes, some people will absolutely take advantage of them and return just about everything. On the flip side though, you're boosting sales numbers by quite a bit, a good number of those WON'T return the game as long as it's decent quality, and even if they do return it, you still got to hold onto their cash for a month or so (free loan) with virtually no cost.

  9. Re:Breaking backwards comp. in languages good on Python 3.0 To Be Backwards Incompatible · · Score: 2, Informative

    1. When you declare the array, you pass the upper bound of the array, not the length. Take two seconds to read the language syntax, and it clearly states this. These are zero-based arrays, so the upper bound of an array of 5 elements would be 4. No, it's not the same as Java or C++, but that's because it's NOT Java or C++ style syntax. If you want that, use C#. As far as your claim of "something - 2" being all over the place, I've never once used anything like that, and I've also never seen it in use. There'd be no reason for it. Arrays are zero-based, just like most other common languages, so just like them, you'll still use "something - 1". Don't blame poor code on the language. Blame it on the poor programmer.

    2. Once again, this is a problem with poor programmers, not the language. "And" and "Or" are the bitwise operators, equivalent to C#'s "&" and "|". "AndAlso" and "OrElse" are the logical operators, equivalent to "&&" and "||". I fail to see how the difference between "&" and "&&" is magically clearer than the difference between "And" and "AndAlso". If you can't remember the difference, than print up a cheat sheet.

By no means am I claiming VB.Net is perfect, because it definitely has some kludges, but at least pick legitimate ones.

Here's where that doesn't quite work though. The record companies have been trying to pound it into our heads for years that we're not buying a song, we're buying a license to listen to that song. If that's the case, then we should ALREADY have the right to listen to a higher quality encoded version of the song. Yes, I'm well aware that the record companies will say that you only purchased a license to listen to that specific lower-quality encoding of the song, but let's be honest, that's pure crap. Quit re-selling us the same stuff we already purchased! If there's some huge cost associated with re-formatting the material, then fine, charge a nominal fee. But in this case, the files were most likely encoded at higher bit-rates long ago.

If you're willing to lay down cash for two 21" LCDs, the $100 or so for the dock isn't much. The docking stations (at least the one I have) support simultaneous output to one VGA screen and one DVI-D screen. The docking station is just plain nice to have if you use a Dell laptop for work anyway, so if you're looking for this setup, it's well worth the money.

With the Home Depot ones, it took her a full week to notice, and only did because she was looking up to turn down the ceiling fan.

As a bonus, some Home Depot stores sell 6-packs of these for about $9.00, putting the average cost per bulb at only $1.50, MUCH cheaper than you can find them elsewhere.

No one wants to buy a seperate card just for wireless anymore. Things are moving exactly the way they moved with regular wired ethernet... everything integrated on the motherboard. True, it won't kill NICs completely, because people will always want to upgrade to the newer, better, and faster, and it's a good bit easier to install a card than it is to get a new motherboard. The NIC is, however, slowly getting less and less relevant.

Everyone copies everyone. Microsoft copies Apple copies Linux copies Microsoft copies... you get the picture. If they want to be successful, they really have no choice. Consumers see a great new feature in one OS, they're going to start whining that theirs doesn't have it. So whoever writes that OS has to grit their teeth, suck it up, and copy that feature. Or alternatively, they can find a way to implement the feature in a way that's so much better, that whoever introduced it first is forced to turn around and copy THEM.

Copying is great for the consumer because it means we'll pretty much all get those snazzy features sooner or later. And if we don't, we'll just move on to whatever's better at the moment. Hooray for copycats!
