    So Google is - uses as a ranking mechanism how many people link to an article. .... Alexa was also based around meta data. It was people who visited this site also visited this site. ... So using people's trails as a mechanism of finding what's important out of the net.
    Amazon develops pheromonetrail which is a coincidence.

    I was about to say .. One of my friends' id in my yahoo buddy list is "sriramk@microsoft.com". When I asked, he (who is working for Microsoft) said that he could do this with the help of Microsoft Outlook.

    Imagine my suprise to learn that this school lunch site was offering me the latest Microsoft Internet Explorer for Linux. But then I follow the link provided only to learn there is no such critter. It would seem that this WWW isn't so world wide, you have to use a proprietary browser that is only provided for an extremely limited number of OS.

    eh? Better not confuse the issue. They require parents to be using windows to monitor their children :)

    It definitely doesn't look like Yahoo yet, but I don't want my search site to be any more cluttered than it is now.

    It is more convinient to use the browser's google search bar, than google.com itself. Perhaps, google can provide the simple version at google.com/simple, while retaining the portal version at google.com

    While Java and .NET may be the future for enterprise software, developers should learn C/C++ first, and not Java, as those who can program effectively in C and/or C++ tend to code better in Java and .NET, while the reverse is not true.

    Hurd fanatics' usual argument against Linux.

    Though Linus calls Linux modular, it isn't actually modular because at run time the kernel runs as one big program( it is called modular because of the modules aspect of Linux). The disadvantage of this being, as the kernel gets bigger it is going to be more difficult to maintain it. On the other hand, the microkernel as such is small. The modules are in user space, and are separate programs, which helps in maintaining them.

    Look ahead 5 years and see how Linux kernel would be experiencing more bloat and Hurd getting better each time

    I installed warty once, and upgraded to hoary. But I don't see any improvement in boot process now. Should I re-install ubuntu?

    Call me when Python has CPAN's 7848 modules. Then we can talk about "productivity".

    There are several CPAN-for-python projects. Uraga is one of them.

    Actually lack of CPAN like thing is not anymore a disadvantage for python. You have much more packages for python that satisfies various needs, what else do you miss. If you need to install any of them, just run the installer in windows or use rpm/apt in Linux. In fact, integrating with your OS/Distro's package manager is much better than a solution like CPAN

    The one thing that Java has going for it are "standard" APIs you can bank on. Is there a standard set of enterprise APIs for Python akin to J2EE?

    I am not trolling, but isn't the standard Java API painful to program with. Who wants to code 4-5 lines just for opening a file?

    In any case, there is PEAK for Python.

    A little more thinking will show that XFCE will also get bloated like gnome. Check out XFCE-4.2 and check back after a year or so. If you care, I use IceWM, only because I don't have enough RAM.

    still wouldn't work because the viewpoint would be different. e.g. But I guess you could assume a typical user viewpoint and just try and get it right for that.

    Webcam behind the laptop + RF sensor fixed in user's head/eyebrow that lits the webcam based on the angle, could be perfect.

    They should make all they games with Java.

    Why so? They (Yahoo) can also use XUL for games! Dropping java would be a great relieve in the enduser side, because of efficient use of his/her resources

    Author has no idea why Nero wants users to buy the Windows version so they can use NeroLinux - bad decision because K3B is much better and learning NeroLinux is not worth the time and the money. NeroLinux has packet-writing support, which is much useful when you want to use your 700MB CDRW like a floppy.
