I don't know about game translations specifically, but there is, ironically, a Japanese equivalent of engrish.com that pokes fun at foreigners screwing up Japanese in very public ways.

I think that, much like the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, the content isn't as important as the fact that it has "Don't Panic" written on the cover (well, figuratively speaking). It makes the n00bz feel safe and within their range.

There is already a device for Xbox that lets you use a mouse and keyboard, called the SmartJoy FRAG. With Sony and Microsoft both touting their connectivity features, I think that the mouse and keyboard combo will see official support in the next generation. Unless they're retarded.

As for community content creation, there's no reason consoles can't support that, since hard drives will either be included or an optional feature with the next gen. The Xbox already has it's own mod scene, though. Guess your interest in consoles is so low you only check in on them once every few years. ;)

I've been suckered into buying a few expensive gaming graphics cards in the past, but never again, I think. I spent $300 on a Radeon 9800 around when Doom 3 came out, and since then I've played only two games: Doom 3 and Half Life 2.

PC gaming is dead, and I can't say I'm sad about it. Buying a $300 console every five years certainly beats blowing $1000 on PC upgrades every two years. Especially when the consoles have, from a somewhat objective point of view, many times the number of critically acclaimed titles released in a year that the PC has.

Additionally, because the reasons given above negate the main reason I've used x86 machines, I've decided to make my next computer a Mac. I wonder if Microsoft, in luring developers away from the PC and to the Xbox, is just going to make it easier for the geek population to move from Windows to Mac OS or Linux?

In addition to not using obvious passwords, there is a rampant problem on the side of websites: requiring the user to choose a question and answer in case of a lost password. Stuff like, "What city were you born in?" Such a question may foil a criminal on the other side of the world from his victim, but if a criminal is targeting locals, perhaps even acquaintances, friends, and family, then it's trivial. Personally, I just respond to the questions with a random string of characters that only leet hackers could guess.

Actually, I am hopelessly addicted to Wikipedia and I'm not so sure that it's such a great thing (being addicted to it, not Wikipedia itself). While I may be on track to soon pass (love the article on split infinitives!) a history major's knowledge of the ancient world, it's also coming at the cost of the many other things I should be studying, which are more important to my future.

So, my problem may be preferable to a game, email, or anime addiction, but it just goes to show that you can have too much of a good thing. Moderation appears to be a very rare trait in people, now and ever since the beginning of recorded history. I guess we'll have to rely on some supervillain to come jumpstart human evolution...

What's the best tech/science field for people interested in traveling abroad (Asia in particular) who also enjoy learning foreign languages (but wouldn't necessarily want to work strictly as a translator)? There are numerous subjects I'm interested in, including CS, EE, physics, neuroscience, and materials. I would be happy doing any (or a combination), and the main deciding factor right now is which field presents the best opportunity for me to live in places like Tokyo, Beijing, and Seoul for awhile.
