and Microsoft is just too lame to bother with, here is my analogy of the available desktops.
remember when you got your first bicycle you thought it was cool, but once you started riding it around the neighborhood you seen what all the other kids were riding and you immediately focused on what you really liked as far as style and colors? it was the same with with my first computer, i got a nerdy win98 powered OEM gateway, but within the first year i started dabbling in Linux and loved it, i would dual boot at first until i got the hang of it and by the time i bought my second PC 5 years later i built it myself with the parts i liked ordered from one of the the usual PC builder' s sites, slapped Slackware on it (without KDE) and enjoyed the heck out of it, (sort of like building a bare bones bobber motorcycle from scratch) a beautiful bike that is as much a work of art as it is a machine with no cruft & kludge to get in the way or act as unnecessary dead weight.
i thought i read on slashdot a few weeks ago that the Gnome developers were going to build their own in-house linux distro? did that fall by the wayside?
I am about ready to discontinue services for a bundled system of basic cable TV, internet and landline telephone, it costs over 100 bucks a month for it all, and one of these days I will call them and cancel all of it, i have a cellphone if i need to make a call, i will still have a computer to do miscellaneous tasks like personal accounting/book keeping, listen to music & video, photo editing & etc... i do have a laptop i can take to town if i need the internet for a few minutes for something but my dependence on the internet is minimal, it is more of a leisure time luxury that i can live without if i must. all i need is just another annoyance like a price hike or a tax on top of what i have to pay for now and BAM! and wave buh bye to all of it as a kick it all to the curb
you're the moron, whats to control or restrict? either you have free speech on the internet or you dont, there is no varying degrees of free speech like the changing the water volume on a faucet by turning the knob, the govt wont mess with the goose that lays the golden eggs.
the established powers that be in finance & govt need a nemesis to keep them in check, because the checks & balances meant to minimize corruption in the banking & investment and govt has failed miserably.

sell my house, my car, all the rest of my possessions, keep and spend ONLY cash, (no credit cards, no bank accounts) buy a dual sport motorcycle and some camping gear and leave civilization, camp out in remote wilderness areas, (not state or federal camp grounds) and you can forget a cellphone, forget a smart phone, the only electronics you should even have would be a portable AM/FM/Shortwave radio receiver if you just got to have one for news & weather, music, general talk and bullshit to listen to.
I don't trust Uncle Sam either and I am a US Citizen born and raised right here, the US Gov has a record of criminal activity so big they would have to use a goddamn freight train to move it anywhere,

microsoft wont go out of business but they could very easily marginalize themselves to the point that they are no longer the 800 pound gorilla of the desktop PC market, and more than likely Apple and Linux will grab more userbase, i prefer old school distros like debian & slackware so apple wont be getting any of my money
