wanted to post that same remark too...
slashdot quality is in freefall: first lots of dupes, then irrelevant articles, now incorrect info. What's next? Blog-style meaningless junk?
Well eveybody is free to run the tools he/she wants, and I've always liked to have good control over what runs on my system: the firewall (kerio) als controls what apps can start. I've owned computers since 8088's and never *ever* got infected by a virus. As for the spam, I use K9 (www.keir.net/k9.html 77KB download), 1.08% fals positives, 0.10% false negatives, and I'm happy with it;)
Strange, that is about exactly the same setup I had until a year ago (except I had 8GB disk). Slow isn't it? Firewall, Anti-spyware, Antivirus, Antispam,... Am I glad I run W2K on brand new hardware now:)
Hate to burst your bubble, but you're not 'using' dead trees, they're dead *because* of you (using paper).
Other than that, your comment is right.
Who designs these bloody GUI's

Are they hiring artists or people who barely use PC's to design GUI? These guys clearly don't have systems with 100+ files and folders, because if they had, they wouldn't use those bloody big icons for it. Where's the common sense?
Actualy, most IM apps work this way, you get the messages as soon as you get online... But because of the interface, you can't sort messages in folders and most of them are oneliners, but it works...
... that this is another US/UK egocentric article. eID cards (as we call them here) are being deployed in Belgium, and are already used for login into online banking,... Even M$ promised to support it. So maybe the US/UK administration could use the same chip and accept the fact that they're a bit late at the party?

Being the 'proud' owner of a NVIDIA nForce4 board for AMD, I can only say that the sloppy drivers and support of NVIDIA irritate AMD owners A LOT (just google around or visit some forums like the one of NVIDIA themselves). Even early adopters hate it when hardware gets thrown on the market without proper and stable drivers...

Agree!
I don't know what is going wrong in training, but may developers only think flash and javascript, where simple (or nice, complex) CSS does the same trick.
It's not *so* hard to create a nice looking site in CSS, but it's not flashy (pun intended)...
Also: sometimes one has to buy what is available... I had a hard time looking for a Seasonic P/S in Europe (I live in Belgium), so I setteled with a Nexus. I also selected a fanless VGA card... Don't know where you live, but there are quite some dedicated case-mod shops here, they sell supersilent fans and stuff. I'd go for a 120mm fan anyway, as it can run slower for the same amount of air... And about the HD: I'm going to buy (today at noon) a Samsung SP1614C, it's supposed to be very silent. I guess you already browsed the SilentPCReview forums about HD suspension and such?
FYI, I'll soon be building a noiseless AMD A64-3500+ for our living room. Once you've read the articles at SilentPCReview, no problem.
BTW, the Seagate barracuda's are no longer the quiet drives they used to be, since their acoustic managment software has been disabled (pending a lawsuit I think)

Not on my Matrox G550 dual screen setup. Would be helpfull if you would have added (at least) what graphics card you're using? Peter

Maybe time to switch back to IE, and let the automatic windows update do its work for ya?
(sorry, this one was way to easy to let pass by)

Don't know why this is posted here, the guys at http://www.silentpcreview.com/ are working on this for years!
