This is going to mean a decrease in standards of living, for just about everyone. We might as well get used to the idea.
Typical Luddite-speak. If anything, our consumption of energy will only increase in the future and it'll just push us towards finding new sources of renewable energy. They are available, they're just not cost effective at the current price points when there are cheaper non-renewable means available.
Isn't there a part of the uniform commerce code about warranties only being voided by what you do to the product is the reason for its failure?
If I were to replace the software in my car's computer I would absolutely expect to void the warranty on my car because that unofficial software could drive the hardware outside of manufacturer's recommended specs and cause premature failure of the equipment. Why wouldn't this be the same for operating systems on a computer? HP can't guarantee that your operating system didn't run the hardware out of spec and cause it to die prematurely. It's not commonplace anymore because of all the safeguards and anti-idiot "features" they build into hardware these days, but it happens.
By that logic, GPL isn't open source because I can't take the entire source and sell a rival product using it.
Where did you get that idea? Of course you can take GPL'd code and create a rival product and sell it. You just have to redistribute your changes to the GPL'd code as well so that others may take advantage of it like you did of the original product.
Handbrake can convert directly from a DVD to H.264 encoded movie files. I rip the movie with MacTheRipper and then either burn that image with Popcorn or take the resulting VIDEO_TS directory and run it through Handbrake. Handbrake will rip directly from an unencrypted DVD as well (for example, the aforementioned burned DVD-R via Popcorn). I took 4 gig DVD rips and converted it to a 1 gig H.264 mp4 and it looks great in full DVD resolution. The only downside is that it takes about 3 hours on my Dual 2GHz G5 Powermac to convert a 90-120 minute DVD to H.264... which surprisingly is slower than my 1.67GHz G4 Powerbook!!! I would've thought the G5 would run circles around the Powerbook, but apparently not.
Besides, how often does one really need to use the web interface at their domain registrar? Reneweing, transfering, updating the list of DNS servers for the domain... not things one does very often.
You're right, we should go back to the days when Internic made you use e-mail forms for all that shit. Ah, those were the days when updates took days or weeks and all domains were $35. People that pay $35 for a domain name are chumps.
My domains auto-renew using my credit card. If your domains expire and you lose them then the only one you have to blame is yourself. You can renew domains well in advance if you want, or just set them up to auto-renew.
Son of a bitch. Not only was this a dupe, but my snarky comment about being the first to mention CentOS was a dupe from the other thread as well. pwn3d.
Let me be the first to say I'm very very very excited about this milestone and look forward to the first stable release of CentOS version 5.0 so us cheapskates can enjoy it as well.
That's eventually who we decided to go with. We just got her a $20 prepaid Virgin Mobile phone since it was the cheapest option we could find. I had thought about adding her to our cell plan, but it would've extended our contract another 2 years. In hindsight I am very glad I did NOT do that because a few weeks ago we met up with her and she said "I went to go use that cell phone you got me in January and the battery was dead. I haven't used it since I charged it up when I got it, why is the battery dead?" *sigh* It's painful how clueless she is about technology. I'm positive she won't remember to buy the charge-up cards to add minutes every 3 months so I'm glad I only wasted $20+$50 for a card to start her off.
A set-top DVR is the only choice for a more-than-minimally-functional system.
How do you define a minimally-functional system? Every single thing I've wanted to watch over the past 3 or 4 years has been available via the analog cable tuner so my Hauppauge PVR 250 cards capture it just fine. If I really wanted to watch pay channels (though I don't subscribe to any) then I could just plug my cable box into the SVIDEO input on my card and use an IR blaster to change the channels as necessary like a TiVo does. In the end, I've found all I really watch is primarily network television that I could pick up with a pair of rabbit ears if I wanted to. I'll occasionally watch USA or TNT or something, but for the most part, everything I ever watch is available over my analog cable service.
I'm one of those rare freaks out there that actually uses the cell phone for *gasp* emergencies and quick phone calls.
All my mother-in-law wants is a phone that can be loaded with 100 minutes for emergencies to call a tow truck or her husband and she wants those minutes to never expire. She just wants to throw the phone in the glove compartment for emergencies, but I have yet to find any prepaid service like this. Everyone wants you to periodically (every 2-3 months) buy new minutes to refresh your balance or else your service is terminated. Why should it matter whether you use the minutes you bought today or 3 years from now? You paid for minutes and that should be all that matters.
And can I get unlimited data included with this plan?
It depends how you define "unlimited". If you mean not billed per kilobyte but we'll cut you off if we think you've used too much bandwidth (say, over 1 GB) for the month in our exclusive opinion then I guess yes, it would be unlimited.
Computer Science graduates can go one of two directions:
Academic Research - Which has grown at a steady rate
Corportate Development - Which collapsed at the end of the dot-com boom.
I don't understand why people seem to discount the other useful employment opportunities that computer science students can pursue like systems engineering, network engineering, network/IT security, and even system administration. To me there's a hell of a lot more to computer science than being a code monkey programming in whatever popular language of the day is out there. Personally I *hate* programming, but I love networking and security. I'll write a program (usually in Perl) to assist me in my daily duties, but I have absolutely zero interest in going to work for some software company and becoming a code drone developing some commercial software package. Why do Slashdot readers always equate Computer Science with programming?
Pi *is* nearly 22/7, at least that's what I learned when in junior high. It comes out to 3.1428571428571428571428571428571. I think that's close enough to whatever irrational number Pi really is for all but the most complex calculations, so why not just define it as 22/7?
I wonder if they have done a risk analysis on bad pr and customer support.
The federal government didn't bother when they decided to fuck up DST this year in the first place, why should GoDaddy? Personally I wish all the corporations in the nation that had to spend millions of dollars upgrading their time zone information would sue the government because of this bullshit. Here's a suggestion, on November 4th 2007, fall back 30 minutes instead of an hour AND LEAVE IT THERE! Eliminate DST completely! Nobody likes it! Everyone always complains about changing all their clocks! There is NO viable business case for having daylight saving time and they know it.
. Also different is in Bangalore you see both luxury buses as well as very ordinary buses bringing employees to work and back home, but not nearly the same level of "luxury" (wireless internet etc) as in the Bay Area.
Yea, Google's luxury buses aren't pulled by donkeys either.
I can't think of any other advertisement medium where viewers pay to see advertising.
You can't? Cable/Satellite television? Satellite radio? Sporting events (all those billboards you paid to go look at). Advertising is everywhere and you often pay to see it.
Well, you've convinced me. I'm going to call my tax accountant on Monday and let them know their services will no longer be necessary now that I realize that income taxes are illegal! Though, there is the slight problem that the government owes me several thousand dollars.:-( If I don't file a tax form, how can I get this money back that my employer has illegal withheld for them!?
Er, no. Thank you very much for your kind offer, but I would prefer my encrypted data were not "optimized" in this way.
Thanks to Enron, many people don't have a choice in the matter anymore. Allowing encrypted connections out of your LAN without scanning the data included could open you up to law suits or criminal prosecution now. Expect that SSL termination will be a growing trend in the years to come as more and more companies come on board.
Uhh, it's either a full computer or not. A full computer without a keyboard and mouse is NOT a full computer.
That's a stupid statement. It's not like you can't plug a keyboard and mouse into the Mini, it just doesn't come with one in the box by default because it's geared towards Windows switchers who have USB keyboards and mice already. You can order it with a keyboard and mouse if you want.
too bad there is no law stating that americans have to pay an income tax. the 16th amendment was not properly ratified
You've been listening to too many scammers. Article 1, Section 8 already gave Congress the powers to collect taxes, including income taxes: "The Congress shall have Power To lay and collect Taxes, Duties, Imposts and Excises, to pay the Debts and provide for the common Defence and general Welfare of the United States; but all Duties, Imposts and Excises shall be uniform throughout the United States;". The 16th Amendment merely removed the confusion about the apportionment of those taxes. The only people that complain about the 16th Amendment being improperly ratified are kooks.
If you're poor enough that you need to use free software to prepare your taxes (up to $52,000 AGI) then you can just use any of the IRS's FreeFile online participant companies. If you make more than that then you need to stop whining and just go buy Turbotax or Taxcut or use one of their online web sites if they don't support your choice of fringe desktop operating systems. Turbotax online should work fine in Mozilla on any platform. If you have State Farm insurance there is even a "free tax filing" link once you login to the State Farm web site get free Online Turbotax Basic or Deluxe or $20 Premier with free electronic filing of federal and state returns.
If neither the Freefile program or Turbotax/Taxcut software or their online versions fit your tax filing needs Mr. Moneybags then you just need to go talk to your private accountant like the rest of the rich people and leave the bottom 95% of us to our drudgery.;-)

So collect income tax and STFU. I'm sick of these states trying to nickle and dime us to death. If you want more revenue, raise your income taxes.
