    The single biggest problem stopping greater linux penetration? "Why are there so many versions". Focus the linux open source community on one or two distros max, then i really believe everything else will fall into place.

    Afterall, it worked so well for FreeBSD. I hear they're up to 3,000 users now.

    Do you know what an incredibly hard process it would be to compile a collection of 212 Star Trek DVDs and ensure none of them contain gay porn spliced in? You're talking about downloading almost 2 terabytes of DVDs over BitTorrent. Who the hell has that kind of patience other than college kids on Christmas break?

    It'd be better to have a USB hard drive that you can periodically copy your code over to in order to back it up. Maybe even have a program that automatically does the backups every so often. With RAID you're going to lose your data even if you have 50 redundant drives and you accidently do a rm -rf on the directory.

    What's sad is that I see a day in the next 15 years where my daughter will come up to me and say "Daddy, what were movies and television like before you had to watch them through these MPAA DRM goggles?"

    "Well honey, back then you could look at the TV directly and it wasn't just a display of digital static. You could see the images and video right there on the screen as plain as day in an unencrypted format. Then the MPAA realized that people were still able to take a camcorder and record that display and got Congress to pass the Video Content Protection Act of 2008 to require the DRM-enabled goggles."

    Actually, hell, that's not sad, I'm looking forward to it. After the Internet gained popularity I started to watch less and less TV and I haven't been to a movie theater in 18 months. More of our content and entertainment will simply come via the Internet in the future instead of the passive television interface that couch potatoes are used to. We just need to ensure that we never allow the powers that be to take away our right to publish our own content with no restrictions (i.e. personal websites, blogs, home videos and photos... anything not created by a major media company).

    Why bother rewriting the GPL when there are many other fine licenses out there like the BSD license which can be used instead? The FSF should encourage people to use this tried and tested license to ensure their software is fully "open source" in all aspects, including commercial uses.

    That's funny. If you came to Ohio they'd charge you tax and laugh at your attempts to get out of it. Hell, as an Ohio resident if I went to Oregon and bought something and brought it back home I'd be expected to pay the 7.5% Ohio+county sales tax on it as a Use Tax. Bastards.

    I tried to upgrade from 1.5 beta 2 when the upgrade popup came up but the install failed for some unknown reason. I just went to mozilla.org and downloaded the DMG image and installed it. /MacOS X 10.4.3.

    When I first came across DotNetNuke I thought "Wow, this is a really cool CMS, I should try this out" until I read more closely and realized it's a proprietary Windows application. What a bummer that was. If they had used a cross-platform environment like PHP I'd probably be running it right now.. as it is I think I'm going to have to settle for Drupal... it's not nearly as nice, but it's free and runs on my Linux box.

    Why watch it on the Internet? Simple, no commercials. And if they do it right we will get to keep the feed while they are at commercial, just to see what they do....

    It's delayed several hours so it's not live. Also, who knows, it may even have national commercials too. Since it's in the wonderful Microsoft streaming format you can't fast forward through the commercials either. It should be fantastic.

    And I don't see what clearcutting has to do with it. As long as it's not a eyesore (and you state that it's usually done in remote areas) then it generally makes sense to harvest all of the crop of trees.

    He probably watched too much Captain Planet growing up as a kid and fears the fragile jungle eco-system will be destroyed by huge evil environmental-destroying pulp harvestor robots that belch smoke and toxic waste and leave a completely clear-cut barren trail of destruction behind them. I can just envision the poor helpless rainforest creatures fleeing their habitats in terror while looking all wide-eyed and sad with frustration at the evil humans destroying their homes. Man I loved that show.

    This seems like it's aimed at Microsoft's "free" MSDE rather than open source databases like Postgres or MySQL. The specs are on par with MSDE.

    Woah, you got me there. If they created hard links I wonder why they never thought to create symbolic links until just now. There are tons of times that I found it would've been useful to move application directories off to another disk partition or even a network share without wading through the registry and maybe even proprietary application configuration files to change the drive letter.

    Anyone building a $500 gaming rig isn't going to spring the extra $ for XP Pro over the home edition.

    Then why build it with a 64-bit AMD chip in the first place if you're not going to buy the 64-bit version of Windows XP for it? They could've just bought a 32-bit AMD Athlon XP 3200+ for a lot less money.

    Get a friend's copy of XP and "borrow" their serial number

    Windows XP Product activation kind of puts a damper on that these days unless you have the volume license key version. Maybe you can borrow their copy of Windows 2000 Pro instead.

    While I realize it was bad form not to mention it directly; neither of those items is exactly rare in the typical Tom's reader's closet. I've got a few legit Windows licenses and extra chassis. They're aren't hard to come by.

    Windows XP Pro x64 OEM edition is $145 at Newegg... this isn't exactly something everyone has extra copies of sitting in their closet unless they've pirated it. It also adds around 30% to the cost of their "$500" system.

    The only people Level3 is hurting around their own customers. Everyone else could still reach Cogent through other providers but Level3 removed the static routes on their network that directed traffic to Cogent, essentially blackholing them for Level3 customers.

    This doesn't mean that MA can't switch to OpenOffice if they think it's the better solution for them.

    But is it? Check out this article on ZDNet for a performance comparison of OpenOffice 2.0 and MS Office 2003. It seems legitimate since my own experience has been that OpenOffice is much much slower and resource intensive than the version of Microsoft Office 2003 I have.

    So the doctor can carry around X-rays on his tiny iPod Photo screen instead of looking at it on one of those big clunky clear 20" monitors. That makes sense unless you want to avoid a malpractice suit. I can barely read the names of my MP3s on that screen much less diagnose someone's problem! If storage is the issue then just carry a portable notebook hard drive in a USB case or keep the files on a private LAN.

    Yes, students do have rights. Everyone who is a citizen is protected by the rights given in the Constution and no one can take them away.

    The Constitution restricts the GOVERNMENT from infringing on your rights, it doesn't say anything about private businesses like Catholic schools or your employer. The only reason you can argue stuff like that in public schools is they receive federal money and can be seen as an extension of the government. You have no right to come into my bar and start mouthing off and saying whatever you want without me kicking you out.

    The trouble with older CPUs is that they lose power later in life as the magic smoke wears out. A 3.6GHz Pentium 4 is basically the same speed as a 486DX2/66 was in 1992, but the 486 "seems" slower today because the magic smoke has escaped so it isn't as powerful anymore.

    actually the original plan regarding the shutte was that the shuttle was to be a cheap small personnel carrier and the "saturn VI" was to be used for cargo..

    Which is EXACTLY what they're planning to do again. The CEV will be a cheap reusable personnel carrier and there will be a separate launch stack used for heavy payload lifting. People seem to equate "old" with obsolete, but in this case the technology is mature, not obsolete.
