Why does one have to brag about not watching TV? I watch rented movie once a month maybe, other than that I avoid it like the plague. It's not that it's bragging, its that I fin that watching TV results in me learning less, and getting less done. It's too easy to zone out on the preview channel for hours, and I just end up tired. Instead, I find programming or interacting with my family in my spare time to be much more enjoyable and stimulating.

I have serious doubts about the validity of this author's points. I think as previous posters have mentioned, it has far more to do with the idea that perhaps many people would not have this intellectual stimulation at all without TV, and therefore something is better than nothing.

Here's the problem though. We moved away from the gold standard long ago. Now, when inflation happens, the value of a coin can become less than the value to make said coin. With paper, the value doesn't really inflate that much. Paper is renewable, we don't have to find another mine to produce it cheaply. It's easy to put out new currency and make changes, as opposed to retooling a minting press. Paper is economically more feasible (and just happens to be lighter to carry).

I don't use Macs because I moved to a system that carried more software (back at System 7ish). The problem here is that people here assume all software should be free, unless they wrote it or need to make a living on it. I'm all for OSS, believe me, but you can't force EVERYONE to give away their time and effort.

Yes, OS's should be free and open, but this is really no different than someone pirating a movie and then doing public theater shows of it next door to the pay theater. It's fine to make your OWN software free, but taking someone elses and distributing it freely (or allowing and encouraging piracy which is exactly what bnetd did) is not appropriate. Since it is free to play on battle.net with a LEGAL copy, it's highly skeptical that it had another purpose, no matter the "disclaimer" that may be attached.
