Cally;
Thank you for the FD link. That certainly is a more readable listing, and would have been a much better first link.
Just to explain why it was sent in that way, the second link in the preamble goes to a posting not on the FD list - Derek's email only went to bugtraq, and I think it contained some material of interest for the story.
This site shows a range of the applications available. I'm sure that easteners would be interested in the de-icing of transmission towers. (Too bad this won't remove trees.)
"Perhaps most significantly, the pages do not reveal how the Zotob virus made its way onto the private CBP network -- an ominous migration that demonstrates that computers used in protecting U.S. borders are accessible, via some path, from the public internet, and could be subject to tampering."
You know, that might be a problem, too...
The other number to look at is that the actual force required to break the bond of the stuff for one bacterium in situ is about a micro-newton. That means that the area in contact must be uhn, 1x10^-6 N / 70 MPa = about 14x10^-9 mm^2, or 120 nanometers square, or really really tiny.
A significant question is "can they get a fully effective dollop of bug juice the size of a quarter to hold up their cars?"
This guy says that the people who claim "global warming isn't so bad" are being quieted by their opposition. Others (dive back through the/. postings for the past while) say that people who claim "global warming is bad" are being silenced.
If both sides are so stifled, why the heck do they both get so much press time?
I smell a conspiracy and both sides are in it together;-)
This guy got $175,359 last year (it's in the huge PDF dated June 3, 2005) for "Theistic, agnostic, and atheistic notions of biological evolution in Islamic societies: exploring Muslim teachers', students' and parents' understanding of evolution".
I am somewhat suspicious that it is "proof of evolution" or lack thereof that is preventing him from a similar grant in the next year.
Seeing that somewhere between
71% and
88%
of these same Americans believe that all existing forms of life were created by the FSM (or equivalent), why don't they also believe that FSM created global warming? Sort of an "intelligent baker" or something like that.
While I applaud the efforts of these individuals who are trying to reduce their energy demands, I really don't think that they can do much for global warming. They can however reduce their own costs for/use of energy, which is a Good Thing in any case.
engineers have expressed serious doubts about the 'fire collapse' theory.
Perhaps, but what sort of engineer? It was my first thought when they came down.
Why did the ( heat shielded) steel buckle?
The "heat shielding" was knocked off the steel by the impact, reducing its effectiveness, and the fire went on for some time. Both of these would promote heating of the steel.
With all due respect to your physics prof (why do we always that before...) the metal doesn't have to melt before it loses stiffness, and buckles. His point seems to be around molten metal at the base of ruins. I don't know what that really has to do with the collapse.
The page was removed basically because the powers-that-be felt Taylor wasn't worth the waste of wiki space. That has to hurt even more than the publicity.
There was also concern that the page was an attack on Taylor. There were some sections that could have been reworded, but he's gotten more than his share of Warhol time.
It seems that their mood sensor must not be working, 'cause the "dorky" index for blogspace isn't increasing.
Yes

I hope that they're not sampling images from the wireless data streams, though it might be interesting to watch the Pr0n on their "sculpture".
RTFA? What's TFA?

You also missed the popular choice of "Vulcan".
Meteors are extra-terrestrial objects which have entered Earth's atmosphere. I think we may want to keep track of those differently.

Ah! Well then, that is wrong.
I'm not familiar with that case, but that sounds more like a copyright infringement than a patent issue.
The new Harper government in Ottawa has cut funding to groups studying climate change. That has to be as chilling as gagging scientists.
Also Scientific American's article has a couple of pictures. AND National Geographic has a write-up on it.

That should be: "Eolas is probably sad that MicroSoft hasn't bought them outright"
But Microsoft sure isn't going to pay Eolas for "licensing fees". Eolas is probably sad that MicroSoft has bought them outright.
I laughed at this until I realised - "Hey, he's talking about my music!" Harrumph. Kids! They should neither be seen nor heard ;-)
have to now build back their customer confidence.
Splitting hairs to go with the infinitive, it seems they already have consumer confidence.
I'll be going, you can wake up now.

I am ... Radish!
Damn, I wish I had mod points for your post. 'Course it would be modded funny, but hey ...
