No, they are not illegal in China. I had an employee fly up to Beijing to get one for me (I also had him buy me a GWAN base station from Hughes which you can also buy legally). You have to register with the local telcom when you buy the SIM card if I remember correctly, but you could use SIMs bought elsewhere.

Exactly. It would appear that Apple's attitude up to this time was one of "bemused detachment" when it came to the hackintosh community. But as soon as some jackasses decide that they are going to turn it into a business model - which primarily relies on Apple's IP - then the gloves come off.

They taste a bit like garlicky dry mashed potatoes. I've had them in a restaurant here in China. I think the guys I was with ordered them as a joke, but frankly, they were good enough that I ate them heartily. The first one was a little weird, because they do look a bit Alien-like and insect-ish.

I'm in China, and I got sick of the pain of endless wipe/reinstall cycles with pirate windows XP. I actually called up the local rep and ordered a genuine copy of Win XP Pro. They we, so to say, ASTONISHED that someone would want a boxed retail copy. Had to special order it - took almost a week to arrive. I'd say 99%+ of Windows installs in China are pirate. Even local OEMS do it. Once it runs out of time, the normal proceedure is wipe/reinstall. Not to good for my business. But I have everyone using Macs. A rarity indeed in China.

One of the reasons for this happening is that for the most part in China, the police don't give a damn. They do not have the Cop Mentality of "Let's catch bad guys" like most (but of course not all) western police do. Just getting them to open a case on anything, even the most blatant criminal behavior, is like pulling teeth.

If anyone here has ever worked as a field tech for NCR, for gawd's sake speak up. I worked in the trenches for 3 years doing the exact same these things these guys do. And the mismanagement is INCREDIBLE. I was in the USA, but I'm pretty sure NCR is exactly the same down there.
In a nutshell: use half the techs necessary, promise twice as fast service, hustle up double the number of customers. Looks great for the sales dept., but they usually EXTREMELY overpromise what the techs can deliver. They SHOULD strike if it's anything like what I personally experienced working for NCR.

"O king," they cried, "there never has been anyone as mighty as you, and there never be anyone so great, ever again!" "And you say all things obey me?" Canute asked. "Absolutely!" they said. "The world bows before you, and gives you honor." "I see," the king answered. "In that case, bring me my chair, and we will go down to the water." "At once, your majesty!" They scrambled to carry his royal chair over the sands. "Bring it closer to the sea," Canute called. "Put it right here, right at the water's edge." He sat down and surveyed the ocean before him. "I notice the tide is coming in. Do you think it will stop if I give the command?" His officers were puzzled, but they did not dare say no. "Give the order, O great king, and it will obey," one of then assured him. "Very well. Sea," cried Canute, "I command you to come no further! Waves, stop your rolling!. Surf, stop your pounding! Do not dare touch my feet!" He waited a moment, quietly, and a tiny wave rushed up the sand and lapped at his feet. "How dare you!" Canute shouted. "Ocean, turn back now! I have ordered you to retreat before me, and now you must obey! Go back!" And in answer another wave swept forward and curled around the king's feet. The tide came in, just as it always did. The water rose higher and higher. It came up around the king's chair, and wet not only his feet, but also his robe. His officers stood before him, alarmed, and wondering whether he was not mad. "Well, my friends," Canute said, "it seems I do not have quite so much power as you would have me believe. Perhaps you have learned something today. Perhaps now you will remember there is only one King who is all-powerful, and it is he who rules the sea, and holds the ocean in the hollow of his hand. I suggest you reserve your praises for him." The royal officers and courtiers hung their heads and looked foolish. And some say Canute took off his crown soon afterward, and never wore it again.
