  1. Re:Barriers to entry on ISPs Race to Create Two-Tiered Internet · · Score: 1

All your examples have VERY low entry barriers (especially compared to telco). For telco you have to realize cost of entry (even into a fairly small market) would be billions without regulations.

You have to remember what this issue was before major telco regulation. One single telco owned the wire leading to your house. It doesn't matter what great idea or inventive upstart comes along, unless they have the capital to run a new wire to everyones house thier dead in the water. The US government basically said "listen, we subsidized a lot of those wires so you have to share". This allows other telcos to enter the market without having to tear up every road in every town in the country to run wires everywhere.

Now it is true that wireless will dramatically lower cost of entry, but wireless will never be as reliable as a wired connection and availablity of wireless is still very sparse at best.

As a rule, I'm against regulation myself and think the market should sort it out. Even in the case of MS$. I think they should be able to bundle whatever they want with the OS. Its not that hard to download something else if you want it. Now the market may be pretty stupid and allow annoying shit to take place, but either you believe in free markets or you don't. The markets should control what is available unless there are extraortdinary circumstances. To me telcos controlling the wire coming into your house is one of those extraordinary circumstances. If I will be forced to sell my house and move 100 miles away to choose a competitor's product, thats a bit over the top even for me.

Now my setup (of the adapter) I'm sure isn't ideal and when we get to that point I think the flash modules will probably attach directly to the MOBO (similar to today's memory)which can certainly help with performance, but in my experience it besides price there are some technological hurdles relating to speed yet to be addressed.

This stuff just drives me crazy!!!! MS was the first to bring online sat images to the net by about a decade. Google copied the concept, but its OK because you like Google better and you think thier product is amazing while the way MS did it sucks. Now MS copies a minor thing like draging an image and its just wrong!

To me this is not just a Google Live/MS Live issue. Same for iPod fan boys who go crazy when another MP3 play copies the color of the case or some stupid detail, but its fine that Apple copied all the functional ideas from others.

Everyone goes on and on about how competion is good, but as soon as someone does something similar to one of thier little "pet" products suddenly its just horrible (even if thier "pet" product is just as guilty as others of copying others).

My complaint isn't about Google or any specific product or company. EVERYONE COPIES EVERYONE ELSE!!!! Thats it, and you know what? Thats a great thing! That lets everyone gain from incremental improvements that are made because of the cycle of copy and improve (or as others would say "embrace and extend").

Intellectually I'm sure we all understand this, but somehow once its "our" product being copied in some little way, we go off bitching about it. STOP IT!!!!!

This new HttpRequest was created to support Outlook Web Access (which I believe was the first "AJAX" application). Sure, I guess it could if you don't bother with the medical definition of binge drinking or the clinical assement done by a professional on this student. Here it is just in case:

A clinical assessment of the student done by a psychotherapist at American Behavioral Clinics said of the student that "it became clear that he does not presently have any issues that would concern me clinically." And further, the student's "behavior regarding the use of alcohol is recreational or episodic in nature and in no way would I characterize it as overuse or abuse."

IMHO you shouldn't disparage someone in a public forum

Fair enough. Who exactly did he disparage BTW? Oh right, some unnamed people. I wonder how those people with no names sleep at night?

I guess he thought he had a right to give his side of the story and have a fair hearing. Seriously, where did he think he was going to school? America or something? Next thing you know criminals will *demand* a trial before being sent to prison. I mean seriously, in my personal experience if you get arrested for something you probably deserve to go to jail.

Then this kid gets his conduct hearing

At which he was barely allowed to address those thier and his witnesses were told not to show up because they wouldn't be allowed to speak (even though those witnesses were faculty themselves).
