bent of mind that makes for a successful programmer
is quite similar to that required to successfully create a proof in mathematics. Both mathematical proofs and computer programs can be either hack jobs or works of elegance, or anywhere in between. I think it's safe to say that my efforts in both areas tend toward the former.
As the holder of a (36 year old) BS in mathematics, I believe I was the only person in my programming class to go over my allotted time on the university mainframe. Clearly I excelled at programming infinite loops.
Yes I would like to teach people how to use Forth, but what is the point?
A colleague of mine once tried to teach several of us Forth. And Prolog. Why did he do it? Because they interested him. Why did we do it? Because it interested us.
I'm not a shill - the closest thing to a tech corp that I've ever worked for was a one-person consultancy that needed an extra semi-competent warm body. However, I have done a bit of Java programming. And I have a gmail account.
Didn't RTFA, but I did read the summary, and it's a bit ironic. The reason I bought my first computer (an Apple ][+ system) was because I wanted everything on a computer that I controlled. And I still wonder if using a cloud-based email service (gmail) is a smart thing to do.
I'm using FF-14.0.1 on Fedora Rawhide, and, after a bit of (annoying but necessary) tweaking, it looks pretty much like FF has looked for quite a while.
No buzzwordifiers were used to create that statement. It's actually quite straight-forward and descriptive. What surprises me is that new minerals are still being discovered in the Allende meteroite, given how much its been studied over the last 40+ years.
I don't think my parents' first two TVs even had UHF receivers. The portable they bought for my grandmother when she came to live with us was similar to FudRucker's father's TV (one knob for VHF, another for UHF), but, whereas the VHF knob had click stops for each channel, the UHF knob did not.
My second grade teacher convinced me I could do algebra using essentially this example: .
Teacher: How much is 1+1?
Class: 2
Teacher: if 1+x = 2, what's x?
Class: 1
Teacher: You're doing algebra.
I was convinced. It wasn't until I hit my undergraduate group theory class that I started thinking maybe I can't really do algebra (but I repeated the class, group theory, that is, and convinced myself I really could do it)
Apple pricing at the dawn of the PC era (Fall 1981), when fresh out of graduate school, the university that hired me offered me $10K in start-up funds for my research lab. I knew I wanted a microcomputer system, but didn't know if the newly-introduced IBM PC was going to be anywhere nearly as well-supported as the Apple ][. So I took that $10K and bought an Apple ][+ with 64K RAM, a Z80 card, CP/M, 3 floppy drives, a monochrome (green) monitor, a color monitor, an Epson MX80 dot matrix printer, a Diablo daisy-wheel printer, Apple Pascal, Microsoft Fortran, and Wordstar. I think there were even a few dollars left over. The next spring, I decided I wanted system for myself so I spent $2200 on a Basis 108 (a German-made Apple ][ clone with a built-in Z80 card and a monstrously heavy case) with 2 floppy drives and a monochrome monitor.
Either Xubuntu or Lubuntu might work well for him. Xubuntu is definitely closer to GNOME2 in terms of features and functionality; if your friend is uses/needs that extra functionality, I'd not upgrade him to Lubuntu.
It doesn't say "download now," but rather "Download Debian 6.0." Anyone who can't recognize that these two phrases are so similar as to be functionally synonymous probably shouldn't be using Debian. To be fair, it's possible that the GP just didn't see the download button.
My first personal computer had a 6502 (and a Z80) on the motherboard. Now get off my lawn!
ANA isn't an American carrier (or wasn't last time I flew on them)
My favorite is raspberry pi.

Dude, you forgot to mention our weather. It's very nice today (25C), but it can get a bit on the cool side (-32C) come winter.
I recommend Lubuntu (but if you all the apps you need will run on it)

Why carry around log tables when you've got a slide rule? Doesn't your slide rule have an L scale?
Moses wasn't Christian. The patent belongs to the Jews and Muslims (Abraham licensed it to both of his sons)
No matter WHO get's elected into congress, they are always outnumbered 300 to 1 by the bought and paid for senators
It's not that bad. There are only 100 senators.

I hope you're not talking GNOME-2 here and not GNOME-3 (or Unity)
I think a BA or BS in the field should be sufficient for most teachers.
it could just as well be indicative of more pressure and more thorough peer review.
Peer review is supposed to happen before the article gets published.
Subject line says it all.
I remember Lattice C. I must be getting old.
